yes, that. think i will adopt the way tim hears it from now on

that section and the switch from nintendo-ass floaty panpipe riddim to the savagery of t williams 'three letters' circa 17mins are v much the croosh flashpoints

having a caffeine meets eyeballs night so i may as well have a go reconstructing the t-list now tbh

r|t|c, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 23:11 (twelve years ago)

oh and then the walter ego mix of queenie 'and every' sped way the fuck up is probably the best bit. such a groovers!

r|t|c, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 23:13 (twelve years ago)

THANK YOU BENNY B

Also I will need to cross-reference but I am blithely certain that I agree with what r|t|c is saying about other particular tunes.

Tim F, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 23:14 (twelve years ago)

if anyone was wondering what would Drake enthusiasts think of a Drake remix by "Glasgow's legendary DJ Q" (lol) with no Drake in it, look no further:

http://www.hotnewhiphop.com/drake-from-time-song.1639722.html

march, may & july sets are so the best, funny how the july set sounded so forbiddingly ruff tuff when it appeared but now feels so breezy and fun! guess i'm just in too deep lol

Mind Taker, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 23:25 (twelve years ago)

omg thank you for saying that, i really didnt want to be that one guy again

Tim F, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 23:30 (twelve years ago)

ah listening again now, such a wicked set! the nintendo-ass floaty panpipe riddim is bicep 'courtside drama', totally ripped this selection for a mix I did. Never would have occurred to pick up on a tune by bicep otherwise, must admit.

the october MOS sets streaming now, should really be giving that a proper listen. Loving that Linden Jay/C&A tune right now though so I've got a good feeling about it.

Benny B, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 23:35 (twelve years ago)

1st ?: Rynsa Man - Electrons (Sivey Remix)
2nd ?: Hybrid Theory - Whats Going Down

Mind Taker, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 23:38 (twelve years ago)

excellent excellent. the one after alias is an obvious slam dunk on the tip of my tongue but the one after tc4 is what i really want

it's so true what mt said though, i think i listened to this one live at the time and found it SO overwhelming and now it's like oh yeah this this this. march is still the one with the everlasting magic for me personally

would never presume to tell the great man what to do but along these ruff tuff lines i still think there's a tempting space for blending this approach with the dostracks mix. (i guess i am saying i want more ejeca and mk dubs and shit - but not losing the sharp sweetness somehow) (xp and now lol at me missing a bicep cut)

think it was 'salient sarah' in the september set that made me strongly believe that lil silva is kinda the quintessential q audio kinship, q brings his tunes to life in such a particular transcendently brilliant way, the harshness, the sweetness, the melodrama, idk it's hard to describe but you don't ever hear it elsewhere

hope we have all heard the lil silva mix of storm queen btw

r|t|c, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 23:50 (twelve years ago)

yeah i remember us discussing this before. Theres been at least 3 occasions I'd heard a new lil silva tune on SC and thought they were weak, only to have a revelation hearing them on Q's shows.

Benny B, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 23:56 (twelve years ago)

Loving that Linden Jay/C&A tune right now though so I've got a good feeling about it.

every mix of this is a vibes iirc. great tune

ooh look taiki & nulight with a new one http://soundcloud.com/lindenjay/linden-jay-break-the-hold-ft

r|t|c, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 23:57 (twelve years ago)

mmm thats nice, not what i was expecting at all from t&n, sort of a downtempo 2step/old skool uk streetsoul flava.

mixmag gave the C&A one away free on their site but rather annoyingly the dl link doesn't work.

Benny B, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 00:09 (twelve years ago)

Would agree that Lil' Silva feels like the key reference point for the harder sections of the July set (can't speak to subsequent entries yet) - esp. that run of "Better Off As Friends", "Living Like I Do" and "Your Drums, Your Love", such a compelling vision of post-apocalyptic dance-pop, the harshness and sweetness slashing into one another rather than cancelling each other out.

Tim F, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 00:11 (twelve years ago)

yeah in all honesty i think silva's is probably the most otherworldly sui generis vision anywhere right now, like you're genuinely talking about something beyond evolved accreted sensibility, a preternatural beauty so savage yet estrangingly calm and lucid

'post-apocalyptic' is right, kinda on some ballard shit pretty much, flesh-eating orchids flowering in the middle of bitterly brutalist urban abstract utopia

r|t|c, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 00:56 (twelve years ago)

banks 'work' and his mix of london grammar 'metal & dust' also urgent & key (the latter is weirdly scarce, might have to youtube it up myself at some point actually)

r|t|c, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 00:59 (twelve years ago)

lil silva so hard to pin down, like the post-apocalyptic ballardian angle though.

we should really post the tls here so we don't lose em in future. Here's the latest. The stanton warriors remix continues to kick my head in. Haven't fully digested this yet though.

that dostracks mix is really rather good isn't it? Quite downtempo for Q. A few quite obvious/old tunes on there that I was nevertheless delighted to hear again when put together like this. Personally I love the MK dubs in any situation but the ejeca ones I've heard have bored me a bit when listened to outside of a q set.

Benny B, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 23:31 (twelve years ago)

will endeavour to record the october set when next i revisit. really kicking myself not doing so for the previous one...

One thing I've been thinking about is whether/how DJ Q's sound relates to what I said about funky here:

http://getphysical.blogspot.com.au/2013/02/last-year-i-had-privilege-to-contribute.html?m=1

My sense is that this sound operates according to a different logic again, a molecular one, as if the idea of the bubbler has become necessarily a covalent relationship between two different impulses - building on comments above, maybe Lil' Silva's scorched earth rigidity and the warm bounciness of MK. Arguably everything else Q draws for, even if sounding quite different to both, can be expressed as falling somewhere within that axis.

Tim F, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 20:03 (twelve years ago)

That's a great essay

Moodles, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 20:09 (twelve years ago)

Thanks Moodles.

Thinking about this more rigorously, maybe it's not Lil' Silva and MK specifically that are important, but hat the relationship between them expresses a structure that the bubbler sound is bound to recreate in shifting permutations.

FROM DJ Q'S DEBUT ALBUM, INEFFABLE
Released March 31, Local Action

After a decade of club singles spanning bassline house, garage, grime and more, DJ Q releases his debut album, Ineffable, on Local Action.

Although he’s been releasing club tracks since the start of the ‘00s, DJ Q had his breakthrough moment in 2008 with ‘U Wot’, one of the biggest tracks to come out of the UK’s bassline house / Niche explosion. The years since have seen him hold down residencies on BBC Radio 1xtra and Ministry of Sound Radio, while releasing on Butterz, Unknown to the Unknown and Local Action. He’s picked up some impressive admirers along the way too – DJ EZ, Mobb Deep rapper Prodigy and Skrillex have all shown their admiration for Q in recent years.

Ineffable follows four singles for Local Action (including the instant sell-out ‘Brandy & Coke’) and – let’s get this straight – is a pop record, albeit a pop record raised on MJ Cole, Todd Edwards, French touch and grime. This is 21st century pop music the way it should sound: at times devoted and at times desolate, sexually charged and made for the night.

Guest appearances come from regular collaborator Louise Williams, Swedish vocalist Kassandra, Kai Ryder, Jayjayborn2sing and cult grime MC Discarda, whose performance on ‘Lassie’ provides a sequel of sorts to his classic freestyle over XTC’s ‘Functions on the Low’.

Tracklist:
01. Get Over You
02. Two Faced
03. Let The Music Play (feat. Louise Williams)
04. Every Time (feat. Kassandra)
05. Through the Night (feat. Louise Williams)
06. Closer (feat. Kassandra)
07. Caught Up
08. Trust Again (feat. Louise Williams)
09. Lassie (feat. Discarda & Jayjayborn2sing)
10. Notice Me
11. Be Mine (feat. Kai Ryder)

Truly this is the greatest moment in the history of ILM.

its a perfect title for Q

too late to lobby for rtc-penned liner notes I guess?
