Destroyer - Kaputt (2011)

that's rubbish. i am not sure but maybe the only spanish music that works for me is flamenco. it has also the advantage that it doesn't have lyrics. spanish singing usually turns me off, more than most other languages, i don't know why.

Okay, so this album has suddenly clicked. I think when it came out there was a lot of anti-retro sentiment flying around and I became too caught-up in this record's reference points and influences to really enjoy it properly. Kind of loving it now.

been bumping this again (total winter album yeah?) and it holds up soooooo well, there are no words..... new (spanish-language) EP out today soundin good to me too

heh, i don't think i started the thread (could be wrong). i remember mucking in a bit at the time of the lists that year but mostly it was getting in the spirit of EOY ruck fever (and really liking Let England Shake obv).

ah i was wrong so tell me, why is Kaputt better or worse than Let England Shake?

god that actually feels like a long time ago in music terms even if it was only less than 2 years ago. feels like lots has changed since then, which is a good thing as i felt like the wider music schema didn't seem to be moving a whole lot from my POV.

funny that people are calling this a "cold" record. I see what they mean, there's a clinical production 'sheen' and a distance to it, but it's also so WARM sounding. You know how 'Being Boring' by PSB sounds like getting into a car and putting the heating on on a cold day?

the last time I was really into Kaputt was summer 2012; before that, winter 2010-1; now it's winter 2013-4... maybe I'm just on an 18-month cycle

... but when I get a "winter" vibe off the album it's from e.g. the long instrumental intros to "Kara Walker" or "Bay of Pigs" (yes I know these are two tracks that least belong to the album proper)—a sadness like wind, whose coldness & passage across your face are more important than whatever baggage (leaves/trash/snow) it happens to be dragging around the parking lot

also: "Poor in Love" chiming gtr reminds me of some other song that I associate with New Year's—maybe a confused subconscious U2 association?

Saw Bejar solo last week -- totally good show, though actually a bit light on Kaputt tunes (I think just "downtown" and "chinatown").

listening to Five Spanish Songs via Spotify right now. i can see why we really haven't talked about it. it's fine and all but nothing as great as his other stuff.
