Was it called "It's the end of this poll as we know it" ?

Tuomas - not rly serious, though I was hopeful about delays. Backpacking around Europe is less conducive to campaigning for recommendations / listening to all unfamiliar nominations than being at work.

I'm not a rockist, I just hate Rap-A-Lot (sic), Tuesday, 15 October 2013 10:24 (twelve years ago)

I've said since the end of that REM poll that the experiment of the shortlist was a failure for reasons that should have been obvious to me at the time. Kinda cool results but not really ILM's favorite tracks. I always wanted to do it over as a standard ballot poll after five years or something, but it'd also be fair to pass the torch since I already had my shot and bungled it so thoroughly!

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 12:40 (twelve years ago)

some dude, the consideration set was weird and the 30-track rollout proceeded in fits and starts over the course of ten months (November 2009-September 2010). interesting and fun but not nearly comparable to today's state of the art.

doctor casino, no offense intended by raising the question. the poll of polls was a fun experiment. fwiw by the time we get to it would be about 5 years!

resulting post (rogermexico.), Tuesday, 15 October 2013 17:27 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, it was by no means "proper!"

I do stand by the slow rollout. Ten months was, uh, a little long - - - but the standard pace around here flies by so fast, you can miss a really lively discussion about your favorite song just because you had to, like, go to work.

The "poll of polls" was just a bad idea through and through. I should have just finished all the album polls and then encouraged people to review those threads in making ballots - - - the nice thing about doing all those album polls is that it got all the songs back in people's heads, drew attention to oft-overlooked tracks ("Circus Envy" for example).

I think some version of that could almost work if the radio-button polls let you vote for 3-5 picks instead of 1. Way too many beloved songs that are just people's second-choice got lost in the shuffle. But really, there's no need to do nominations or a limited list for a single artist poll.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 18:25 (twelve years ago)

imo it was a great idea. some things you can't know until you test them.

resulting post (rogermexico.), Tuesday, 15 October 2013 18:28 (twelve years ago)

aw, well thanks man. I do like the totally wacky results, especially the really unlikely consensus #1. I still think it makes a really great double-disc intro to the band...

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 18:30 (twelve years ago)

(What really needs a re-do at the appropriate time is the Video Games poll, where you could only nominate one game per decade. Bizarre!)

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 18:33 (twelve years ago)

Excellent thread title.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 19:01 (twelve years ago)

OOH YES

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 19:05 (twelve years ago)

TEN!

NINE!

oh wait..

Mark G, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 19:41 (twelve years ago)

would be great if as part of the updated list of polls there were links to all the old results threads... come on, some lovely person do that

There's a dedicated thread for this (hasn't been updated since March though*):

ILM Ballot Polls: where to find the results threads

*I may do this tomorrow if someone else doesn't step in first

i might try and do this soon, though it was easier for WmC to do it because he had mod powers.

Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 08:34 (twelve years ago)

really liking some of the newer picks. Low will be amazing and Talking Heads has finally been added :-)

is there one of your favorites that is still missing, then why not add it to this list?

Bee OK, Thursday, 24 October 2013 05:42 (twelve years ago)

Hey, I'm almost up with Elvis Costello. Can somebody tell me how to run one of these bad boys? Isn't there a spreadsheet or something?

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 24 October 2013 12:39 (twelve years ago)

btw if Doctor Casino wants to run the REM thread I'm happy to turn it over - nbd got a couple years to decide

I just used Excel.

Would like to see someone do a Bjork poll. And Siouxsie.

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 24 October 2013 14:56 (twelve years ago)

Forgot about Bjork. I'd volunteer to run that poll if I'm not dead by the time we get around to it.

midnight outdoor nude frolic up north goes south (Eric H.), Thursday, 24 October 2013 15:07 (twelve years ago)

i liked the way the big more-than-one-artist's-catalog-spanning polls were spaced out before with Motown and Stax not overlapping, so i'm gonna wait until the Disco poll has run its course to get the classic rock one going fyi.

some dude, Thursday, 24 October 2013 15:45 (twelve years ago)

Is there going to be an end-of-year hiatus on polls while the best of '13 voting/rollout happens?

Victor Immature (WilliamC), Thursday, 24 October 2013 15:52 (twelve years ago)

What will be the cut-off for classic rock some dude? 1980?

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Thursday, 24 October 2013 15:53 (twelve years ago)

I second a Bjork poll by the way. Would also love to see old skool hardcore/jungle.

Is there going to be an end-of-year hiatus on polls while the best of '13 voting/rollout happens?

Yeah, we'll probably need any voting to have ended by mid-December, though a particular poll's rollout can overlap with the EOY nominations process.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 24 October 2013 15:56 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, def mark me down for Bjork.

aww, thanks man. We can hash it out then, maybe good to be on a "buddy" system for these things.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 24 October 2013 19:35 (twelve years ago)

kornrulez, Finefinemusic had some kind of template somewhere, IDK where u cd download it though

nypc blue (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 25 October 2013 20:51 (twelve years ago)

kornrulez, here's FFM's template, set up for a 20-song ballot. You can fiddle with the ballot size and points on the Vote Weight sheet. Let me know if you need an .xls emailed to you, or if you can use this online version.

there's been a bit of discussion itt of how the classic rock poll will go down, starting here: Thread for coordinating the order and timing of ILM ballot polls

nothing's set in stone yet, and i don't know if a strict chronological cut-off will be employed, but if so it will definitely be later than 1980. for a long time U.S. stations seemed to abide by 1987 as the rough demarcation point, now it's moving later and later but it doesn't seem right to push past that.

some dude, Friday, 25 October 2013 23:27 (twelve years ago)

I still like the idea of picking five major stations, finding their 500 song Labor Day countdowns, and including any song that made at least two of them. I guess the question is when the countdown's from. I vote 1996 for no real reason.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 26 October 2013 03:27 (twelve years ago)

Not to put undue pressure on Shakey Mo, but given the recent passing of Lou, should the VU/solo careers poll commence soon?

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 28 October 2013 05:14 (twelve years ago)

I was just gonna ask...

Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 28 October 2013 18:54 (twelve years ago)

Yes, set it up right now if you want to imo.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 28 October 2013 19:01 (twelve years ago)

yes!

Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 31 October 2013 16:59 (twelve years ago)

R. Kelly has been extended a bit: "Anyway bummmmp and also here to extend this until next Friday the 15th cos I need the time."

take all the time you need and God speed.

in the past most voting thread have been open for only around 10 days give or take, outside the non-artist polls. so to keep this thing moving a bit can we limit artist polls to around 10 days or so of open voting. thanks!

Bee OK, Thursday, 7 November 2013 03:52 (twelve years ago)

both R. Kelly and Velvet Underground results are starting on Monday, maybe...

anyways, kornrulez i think you can open Elvis Costello voting when ready.

Bee OK, Sunday, 17 November 2013 04:04 (twelve years ago)

I'm still working on my disco ballot. Now you're gonna make me work on Costello at the same time? Damn, that's just mean.
