vol 1 -

― scott seward, Sunday, 27 April 2008 13:18 (eighteen years ago)
and, hey, while i'm at it, this mix still seems to be working. more for the rockheads out there:
Tracks - Street Fighting Man (So rare you won't even find it on a WFMU playlist! Seriously, many great songs and albums only exist on the interweb as part of an old FMU playlist. I know, I've checked! Anyway, Tracks were a Boston-based band and they made one triple-album(!!!) boxed set(!!!) in the early 70's of seriously accomplished hard/prog/southern rock jamz and nobody has ever heard it. But now YOU have! A little.)
Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart - It's All Happening On The Inside/Abracadabra/Jumping Jack Flash (The whole first side of Tommy & Bobby's greatest achievment is one long song/suite, so you get three interlocking parts. I've played this at least a hundred times over the years. They are my gods.)
Mandala - Come On Home (Mandala made one late-60's white soul album that yields exactly one song with a guitar solo so sharp and piercing that it will leave you bloody for weeks.)
Noah - Bury The Remains (death-pop piffle. a bit of a breather.)
Glass Harp - Changes (In The Heart Of My Own True Love) (More fireworks. Courtesy of Phil Keaggy,a guitar god if there ever was one. Three amazing albums of powerful prog/hard rock and then Phil was off to do the lord's work.)
Orion - While My Guitar Gently Weeps (*Token Novelty Number* But, you know, with lots of crazy guitars.)
Redwing - Soul Theft (rockage.)
The Gentrys - Stroll On (genius rockage. from a genius album.)
Song - Medicine Man (So hard to pick one song from this album. It's all good. This is the mammoth closer. It has to be the heaviest thing that Curt Boettcher ever had a hand on.)
Circus - Stop Wait & Listen (Local pop-rock band from Ohio makes an album of cool rocking stuff, puts it out on their own label, and then...well, nothing. This one coulda been big. Maybe.)
Terry Brooks & Strange - Mister Strange (This is what cult guitar heroes are made of. From 1980 and released on Terry's own Star People Records.)
Harvey Mandel - Bite The Electric Eel (Noodles! Lots and lots of noodles!)
The Max Demian Band - See Me Comin' Down (Cool Thin Lizzy rip from Herman Hesse obsessed hard rockers.)
Dirty Angels - You Got Me Runnin' (Another great album from an unjustly forgotten band. This thing just keeps on giving.)
A Foot In Cold Water - Yalla Yae (Canucks invent the new wave of british heavy metal years before the fact and don't even break a sweat.)
Valhalla - I'm Not Askin' (Again, hard to pick one song. One of my fave records of all time. Along with label-mates The Damnation Of Adam Blessing, Valhalla were made of greater stuff than most. Now on CD! I think.)
Underground Sunshine - Gimme Some Lovin' (Best known for their Beatles Birthday cover, this is simply 8 minutes of senseless mindless fuzz abuse.)
Thee Image - Show Your Love (Unbelievably over-the-top. A friggin' monument to over-the-top. A word to the wise: always buy a record if someone in the band is wearing a cape on the back cover.)

― scott seward, Sunday, 27 April 2008 15:29 (eighteen years ago)
i was wrong about Tracks. There was a single CD reissue of some of the songs from their triple-album. But they left off a ton of stuff. And I don't think they included a lot of the covers. Probably for money reasons. And the covers are kinda the best things they did. Don't know how easy it is to find the Tracks CD. It was put out by a teeny tiny label I've never heard of. So, I stand by my claim that (hardly) anyone has heard this band. And they were great!
― scott seward, Sunday, 27 April 2008 15:34 (eighteen years ago)
scott have run across a band called westfauster? they put out 1 album of flute-driven prog around 70-71.
― m coleman, Sunday, 27 April 2008 15:48 (eighteen years ago)
i've seen the album, but i've never heard it. love the cover. it was reissued, but only on cd, i think. the westfauster album was on nasco. home to whalefeathers, felt (the original psych/prog felt), and the electric toilet! all that stuff goes for pretty big bucks. and isn't easy to find!
― scott seward, Sunday, 27 April 2008 17:09 (eighteen years ago)
westfauster & whalefeathers were from cincinnati. the "west" in westfauster also played in some mid-70s glam and power-pop bands with a friend of mine, we were talking about old times last week. think I'm gonna wait to spend $20 on that CD reissue. gonna stream yr mix for inspiration tomorrow -- sounds swweeet m'man.
― m coleman, Sunday, 27 April 2008 18:23 (eighteen years ago)
IIRC one of the guys from whalefeathers later had a real good country-rock band called wheels, don't think they made any records though.
― m coleman, Sunday, 27 April 2008 18:25 (eighteen years ago)
so, did you know about Circus, back then? that Circus album has "local favorites" written all over it. i can't remember if I asked you about them or not.
― scott seward, Sunday, 27 April 2008 18:25 (eighteen years ago)
i don't think the Circus album has ever been reissued. it's a good record. pop/powerpop/rock. definite brit influence. one of their songs was on one of those teenline/hyped 2 death CDs.
here's the cover:
http://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/circus__cleveland_/circus/
― scott seward, Sunday, 27 April 2008 18:29 (eighteen years ago)
rateyourmusic is where i got to get humbled. talk about digger envy! people have a list of 100 cool looking records on there and i've heard, like, two of them! ah well. as long as my health holds out, i'll be listening forever. i also have to remember that i've NEVER had a lot of money. or much money at all. so, i listen to what i can on the shoestring budget that is my life. i am fast becoming an expert on dollar records.
― scott seward, Sunday, 27 April 2008 18:37 (eighteen years ago)
Ha -- Dirty Angels. I had them on A&M, two albums I think. Good ol' Charlie Karp who wrote "Too Bad On Your Birthday," shopped around to Ram Jam, then Joan Jett, then Leslie West. And probably many others except Dirty Angels who didn't stay together long enough to record it. Or maybe they did and I don't remember.
Max Demien were oddballs. Saddled with album art which told you nothing about what they were actually like, which was pretty fair hard rock. I remember seeing it a lot in cutout bins.
― Gorge, Sunday, 27 April 2008 19:43 (eighteen years ago)
Does anyone happen to have an MP3 of the Gangsters of Love/"Never is Too Soon" track on it's own? I've bought a bunch of the individual tracks on iTunes and have s0leseaked a bunch more, but I can't find that one, and it might be my fave of the whole thing*
* (I know I'm crazy, since I have the whole mix itself, but I wanted the individual tracks for work iPod shuffle-age with some other stuff).

― Dan Peterson, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 17:24 (seventeen years ago)
Scott, thanks for uploading this, I really liked the first two, very much appreciated. Not sure how I missed this one two months ago. Small problem, side two only gets halfway through track four before it stops, and the file is only 27MB when I'm guessing that it's actually meant to be nearer 90MB like side one is?
