yeah absorbing this release in small chunks has been the surest way for me to submit.

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 11:53 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, his voice does grate a bit. I have to admit...

MikoMcha, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 13:41 (twelve years ago)

It did for me when I'd only heard "Juice" and that's prob why it took me a couple months to check it out until I saw so many people I trust talk about how good it was. But as soon as I put it on it was immediately taken with it. Total Albums that you know are going to be brilliant within the opening 20 seconds of the first track status.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 18:26 (twelve years ago)

also agree with matt but i think ultimately i could probably power through the sound of his voice if i felt more compelled by what he was saying with it. just don't really feel like i need early yeezy told to me again by wyclef on ludes

r|t|c, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 18:35 (twelve years ago)

the tape opening with a re-do of an old Kanye tape intro is the opposite of an auspicious opening imo

Jean-Claude Brand Ambassador (some dude), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 18:44 (twelve years ago)

although in generally i find the whole thing more compelling and less kanye-ish than rtc does

Jean-Claude Brand Ambassador (some dude), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 18:45 (twelve years ago)

yeah look i dont want a bunch of dudes jumping down my throat telling me he's not exactly exactly like ye, i can see that

Hmm, I didn't realize this. I just heard the horns and voices and it was like all the sunbeams were pointed straight at me for a moment.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 19:02 (twelve years ago)

the outro of the final track is one of the absolute best parts of this tape

Well then Chance made something better out of it.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 19:53 (twelve years ago)

One of the problem with the voice it is that at its most grating on Juice, which is the first single. Once I powered through it, I was fine. I really hope he doesn't get buried because of the voice like Joanna Newsom did.

Not impressed with the James Blake remix, and I usually really enjoy James Blake.

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 22:33 (twelve years ago)

hate it

rap steve gadd (D-40), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 22:34 (twelve years ago)

isn't she doing pretty well for herself

j., Tuesday, 17 September 2013 22:59 (twelve years ago)

haha what an odd go-to point of comparison

Jean-Claude Brand Ambassador (some dude), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 01:10 (twelve years ago)

well unfortunately there's no history of rappers with "weird" voices achieving wide success for us to draw on

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 18 September 2013 03:52 (twelve years ago)

Kendrick?

Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 04:03 (twelve years ago)

Wayne? Bizzy Bone? Boosie?

Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 04:06 (twelve years ago)

eh joanna newsom still seems like the most logical comparison to me

Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 04:44 (twelve years ago)

Sorry, wasn't aware of many rappers whose voice grated some like Chance's. It is an odd comparison.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 04:50 (twelve years ago)

Maybe it's the "neh neh neah" voice that's the most annoying... And some of the singing as well...

Ha.

MikoMcha, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 14:41 (twelve years ago)

this talk about his weird grating voice is strange to me because it's so similar to lil wayne's? i mean not identical but certainly in the same lane, and it's made pretty obvious at the start of the tape when he says "please say the rapper"

i'm mostly with rtc in that i don't find what chance says particularly compelling, it's all a bit too backpackery for me though i don't hate it or anything

lex pretend, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 17:50 (twelve years ago)

what does 'too backpackery' mean in relation to what he's talking abt

rap steve gadd (D-40), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 17:50 (twelve years ago)

i def thought his earlier stuff was a little too much The Craft Of Song and not enough of him in it, but recent stuff is more fully fleshed out.

rap steve gadd (D-40), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 17:51 (twelve years ago)

Man...I can't at all understand anyone who says they don't find him compelling. "Paranoia" breaks my heart every time I hear it. I can't remember the last song that did the same.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:02 (twelve years ago)

yeah i don't get that criticism at all

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:06 (twelve years ago)

Rapping about your close friend being stabbed to death doesn't strike me as excessively backpackery tbh

Deafening silence (DL), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:09 (twelve years ago)

Lol at the idea of reducing a goofball like him to I R SERIOUS RAP tho, even if he does have some shit gettin' too real moments

The Reverend, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:10 (twelve years ago)

that one's not on acid rap

idk it's all fine i guess but it doesn't feel distinct, or anything i feel i need to go back to? nothing about it is substandard but i can't pinpoint anything that really stands out for me, i feel like it all reminds me of other stuff

lex pretend, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:11 (twelve years ago)

oh the weed coughs are pretty dnw i guess

lex pretend, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:12 (twelve years ago)

I must be in a morbid mood because it's the death-related lines that stuck with me.

Deafening silence (DL), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:15 (twelve years ago)

that one's not on acid rap

"Paranoia"? It's like part 2 of the second track.

President Keyes, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:17 (twelve years ago)

I got a new backpack. I'm gonna put the Chance album in it!

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:19 (twelve years ago)

oh is that why there's a huge gap in the middle of "pusha man", i did wonder

sorry, it didn't hit me or grab me then :/ i admit my attention had almost completely wandered by the last few tracks though. (this was a long-belated relisten, i hadn't heard it since my first go)

lex pretend, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:20 (twelve years ago)

we all sing along to the chorus on Cocoa Butter Kisses, right?

the Shearer of simulated snowsex etc. (Dwight Yorke), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:22 (twelve years ago)

the last few tracks are the best on the album

rap steve gadd (D-40), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:25 (twelve years ago)

Agreed. "Acid Rain" is awesome.

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:28 (twelve years ago)

I think he'll be great live, despite my earlier posts. And do think it's clearly one of the best tapes this year.

MikoMcha, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:34 (twelve years ago)

"acid rain" is totally gripping

Realized on reading this thread that I'd vaguely (and wrongly) thought of it as a really random Being There reference.
