Have fun! I mean, really, who could hate this stuff?

I have gathered no gaudy flowers of speech in other men's gardens (dowd), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 11:34 (twelve years ago)

Thanks, I'm pretty excited!

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 12:47 (twelve years ago)

I was just listening to them in the car!
I tried to stream the album on NPR but it kept failing >:(

surprised at how much i hate this stuff tbh! vocals seem particularly awful?

flopson, Thursday, 26 September 2013 03:33 (twelve years ago)

v weak vocals but i guess thats the appeal to some?

Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 26 September 2013 03:34 (twelve years ago)

feel like i like other similar indie dance stuff with weak vocals like YACHT or whatever... mb that's more deadpan or something

flopson, Thursday, 26 September 2013 03:39 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, I mean obviously people can hate this stuff just fine. I suppose it's on the fey side? You think with a more powerful voice you would like it more?

What I cannot bear is "normality." (dowd), Thursday, 26 September 2013 06:56 (twelve years ago)

Solid album but the first thing I ever heard by this lot was The Mother Will Share and there's nothing to touch it. Haim they are not.

Deafening silence (DL), Thursday, 26 September 2013 09:04 (twelve years ago)

i felt the same way about "gun" at first but it's now apparent to me that "night sky" is the best thing on here

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 26 September 2013 14:19 (twelve years ago)

really REALLY hate the dude vocals

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 26 September 2013 14:19 (twelve years ago)

"night sky" and "we sink" really

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 26 September 2013 14:19 (twelve years ago)

very enjoyable album IMO, very in the vein of Purity Ring

You are kind, I am jerkface (DJP), Thursday, 26 September 2013 14:23 (twelve years ago)

xp cosign on the dude vocals, the bleating on "under the tide" is horrible

monotony, Thursday, 26 September 2013 14:27 (twelve years ago)

honestly I don't remember the dude vocals

You are kind, I am jerkface (DJP), Thursday, 26 September 2013 14:31 (twelve years ago)

The mother we share is great. The vocals are rough but every time I hear a bit of her scottish accent in it all is forgiven.

owenf, Thursday, 26 September 2013 23:43 (twelve years ago)

Having heard the dude vocals now, I feel like ppl are looking for reasons to hate them?

smang culture (DJP), Friday, 27 September 2013 00:08 (twelve years ago)

I like "The Mother We Share", but it was "Lies" that really grabbed me initially. I wouldn't claim that every song on the album is of equal intensity or immediacy, but I think it's a great debut by a really promising band. Frightened Rabbits + Robyn, or a post-indie version of Berlin, or something. The hype, such as it is, is absolutely fine with me.

It seems like just about everyone on this thread has a different favorite song, despite the album basically operating in the same tiny box all the way through. Mine's still Recover.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 27 September 2013 07:03 (twelve years ago)

this genre of music was started by Telepathe in 2008, i think

Andrew Sandwich, Friday, 27 September 2013 14:50 (twelve years ago)

They were pretty great last week btw and one of my favorite songs was one one of the dudes sang. He was a crazy dancer. Everyone at the show was like 12.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Friday, 27 September 2013 20:56 (twelve years ago)

OK maybe like 20 but man it was a YOUNG crowd which is not surprising at all it was just something I noticed.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Friday, 27 September 2013 20:57 (twelve years ago)

ha that's like the exact opposite of the PSB crowd, where I am pretty sure the median age was 47

smang culture (DJP), Friday, 27 September 2013 20:58 (twelve years ago)

Can confirm both of you; I seem to only go to shows nowadays where the crowd is way younger or way older than me

Vinnie, Friday, 27 September 2013 21:10 (twelve years ago)

oh for the days when 47 was way older than me ;_;

Just went from liking this band to loving this band.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 30 September 2013 17:42 (twelve years ago)

It's heart-sinking that this is part of the job of a woman in a band now. Obviously sexism isn't new but the task of combing through social media interactions every day, knowing that it will contain shit like that, is.

Deafening silence (DL), Monday, 30 September 2013 17:52 (twelve years ago)

one month passes...

can't wrap my head around the fact that this band is so under-appreciated here. not that they're great or anything but we share our mother and gun are eprfect pop songs.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 29 November 2013 05:26 (twelve years ago)

"The Mother We Share" might be my Single of the Year.

a fifth of misty beethoven (cryptosicko), Friday, 29 November 2013 05:26 (twelve years ago)

Love them. Maybe my album of the year. Top three for sure.

Geoffrey Schweppes (jaymc), Friday, 29 November 2013 05:36 (twelve years ago)

i like the album a lot but - and i assume i am in the minority here - i feel like Purity Ring does it better.

Recover is my favorite jam (tho Mother is great), and i don't mind when the dude sings.

alpine static, Friday, 29 November 2013 06:05 (twelve years ago)

Need to listen to the album more. Mother and Lies have made the final cut onto my 'drivetime classix' cds i.e. ones to belt out in the car

kinder, Friday, 29 November 2013 17:50 (twelve years ago)

Hurricanes (chvrches remix) by Ms Mr is good and chvrchesy too

kinder, Friday, 29 November 2013 17:51 (twelve years ago)

On paper this Knife-aping vaguely indie pop is designed for me but I just can't get into them, and I'm a fan of Nikki And The Dove.

boxedjoy, Friday, 29 November 2013 20:15 (twelve years ago)

this album is very hit-or-miss for me but I'm digging parts of it more than I thought I would.

My god is their "Bela Lugosi's Dead" cover a steaming pile.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 27 January 2014 17:47 (twelve years ago)

Haven't heard it. Is it worse than Lorde's cover of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World"?

MarkoP, Monday, 27 January 2014 17:59 (twelve years ago)

Differently so, but yes. But DJP likes it and my soul hurts a little. It's streaming at Stereogum if you want to hear it.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 27 January 2014 18:02 (twelve years ago)

I voted for "Mother We Share" in the EOY poll, largely on the strength of this unnominated waning summer remix:

Finally got around to this album a few weeks ago and I love it. A lot of people I know really don't like it, and they're fans of The Knife/Grimes/Purity Ring/et al.

I don't understand the hate they get, as Chvrches seems to fit in perfectly with all the other recent "synthpop" bands that are out now. Maybe it's because they're a little less "dark", or because they're slightly reminiscent of Bis in places (another band I loved but everybody else hated)?

naus, Tuesday, 11 March 2014 04:38 (twelve years ago)

Haha Bis is a bit cold, you prob put a few ppl off right there

Chvrches-Linkin Park beef!

Mike Shinoda:
"There’s so much music out there; there’s so much stuff that sounds like Haim or CHVRCHES or Vampire Weekend that I’m full. The thing I’m hungry for is not that. I turn on the rock station in L.A. and it sounds like Disney commercial music."

Lauren Mayberry:
"I think that everybody likes different kids of music and that's absolutely fine. I call bullshit a little bit on that one because it's not a coincidence that his band has a record to sell and he mentioned several bands that people are writing about. It's not an opinion I worry about hugely because it's not my kind of music. [But] I don't really like being called a corporate sellout by the man that wrote the music for the MTV VMAs."

jaymc, Wednesday, 2 July 2014 15:57 (eleven years ago)

pretty good zinger

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Wednesday, 2 July 2014 16:13 (eleven years ago)

Nice one Lauren!

Shinoda was on Real Time with Bill Maher a couple weeks back, and Bill was lavishing him with praises like "rock legend" and shit like that. I choose to believe Bill was reciting from a press release. Some right wing dickwad who was also a guest on the show was genuinely excited to be sharing the stage with Shinoda too, but that's less suspect.

Also, it wasn't until these two incidents that I even knew the name of the guy from Linkin Park.

You know something? He *did* say "well, yeah" a lot. (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 2 July 2014 18:46 (eleven years ago)

is mike shinoda the rappin dude or the singin dude

Solo tour!

https://www.instagram.com/p/Cu7Qi_Mrmq3/

This year is the 10th anniversary of the first CHVRCHES album. I met Iain and Martin when I was 23 — a little baby of a person, in hindsight. Looking back on what we’ve achieved together, so much of it doesn’t feel real or even possible. Thank you to every person who has been a part of that.

I am so proud of all the chapters our band has been able to have and I am so grateful to my bandmates for taking me on that journey with them. We are all confident that the CHVRCHES story has many more pages yet to be written.

For now, though, I am excited / terrified / bewildered to tell you that I have been working on my first ever solo music and will be able to start sharing it soon.

For a long time, I couldn’t imagine ever doing anything outside of CHVRCHES. Since I was 15 years old, I have always, only, ever been in a band. I always wanted so badly to belong somewhere — to be one of the boys, and to fit in. But as I sail / stumble through this era of my life (your 20s really do go by in a flash, kids), it has started to feel like there are things I want to write and say and do that need to be done on my own.

Thank you for being kind to us and for giving me the opportunity to do this. The first headline shows are now announced and on sale at 10am local tomorrow in the US and Monday in Europe. I guess here we fucking go?!

Seeing her in Boston tonight, and enjoying the fact that I really don't know what to expect.

glenn mcdonald, Monday, 18 September 2023 14:05 (two years ago)

oooh so im assuming the rest of her solo stuff is good? if the album is anywhere near as wonderful as "Are You Awake?" then this could really be something. I've been playing that track over and over.

gman59, Monday, 18 September 2023 19:13 (two years ago)

i listened to some live recordings and the main reference points are 80s madonna (she's even covering "like a prayer") and pretty hate machine (surprisingly enough), it all sounds pretty good

ufo, Monday, 18 September 2023 21:33 (two years ago)

In concert, at least, the other songs were all much more upbeat than "Are You Awake?"

Vinnie, Sunday, 8 December 2024 23:49 (one year ago)

Not sure it's a completely successful album, but I was surprised how fun (and 90s!) it is compared with Chvrches. Some of her sharpest lyrics to date. The Greg Kurstin-produced "Sunday Best" is the clear standout to me

ufo, Sunday, 29 March 2026 08:52 (two months ago)

Ooh I like the sound of that new song, a bit Garbage-y. Been waiting very patiently for the follow-up to Screen Violence

Vinnie, Sunday, 29 March 2026 11:32 (two months ago)

I was just thinking the other day that I need some new music that sounds like Chvches, so some new Chvrches music will definitely do.
