anyway looking at that list this seems like it would be the grossest album ever but it's really not? hooks piled on to infinity. these guys were not on my radar at all, so thanks ilx!

One band that also came to my mind was the earlier stuff by The Devlins. Particularly songs like Alone in the Dark and Someone to Talk To.

His voice is fairly anonymous and not actively offensive but I really don't get his intonation at all, there's a bit where he sings "throw ipp on yr shizz" and I genuinely have no idea what accent he's going for.

The first Bloc Party album is a good call actually because the 80s Big Music aspect of that record is often overlooked in favour of the post-punk revivalism.

I suspect if this had come out in 2006 it would have elicited a monumental mass eyeroll.

Not sure about the production and mixing on this though, I wish there was a bit more space - what's the point of having massive 80s drums if there's no space for them to echo round?

this kind of mid-Atlantic meets mid-Thames non-denominational whine/mumble is an improvement on the lumpen fake-localisms of a lot of UK indie from the last 10 years so i think you have to look at as a way for a band to escape that trap rather than be sad cos the guy doesn't have some great soul voice

having said that it wd be weird hearing a band making these kinda musical moves and having a singer with a great soul voice

but you might end up with what Tony Hadley sounds like in his own head and that doesn't seem like a win

i think id connect with the band about 50 percent less if the guy didnt sound like a mash of every whiney 2nd wave emo singer

Lex not liking this is not shocking. Him not hearing the hooks in the Paramore album is a bit befuddling. It's got hooks for days.

I have tried so many times with that album but to no avail, every time I start wondering when it'll end about halfway through and I can never remember any of it when it ends. It's like if ashlee simpson made a really samey, really long, really one-note and personality-free album
