cosmic balearic beats vol.1 in september from eskimo with coyote in flagranti maelstrom and others... looks bonerific

this record is superb btw... so much great music on here

braveclub, Monday, 29 September 2008 21:59 (seventeen years ago)

four weeks pass...

^^ lol was about to revive thread to talk about this, esp. the homerun track which is a STUNNER (you can hear it unmixed at their myspace, doesn't seem to be an actual 12" out yet: http://www.myspace.com/homerunlaurent)

donna rouge, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 04:29 (seventeen years ago)

i want more of this kind of epic-synths-yawning-into-the-chasm type stuff

Yea I'm digging that one too, more than the Deakin one in fact

psychgawsple, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 15:05 (seventeen years ago)

actually i wish that comp was released unmixed.

the mixing isnt anything special and about 1/3 of the tracks are mad boring.

♪☺♫☻ (gr8080), Wednesday, 29 October 2008 12:24 (seventeen years ago)

are you guys talking about Cosmic Balearic Beats? the whole thing just came out as 3 seperately-released, unmixed 12"s...
i'm way into the Coyote & Maelstrom tracks...

mikebee (BATTAGS), Wednesday, 29 October 2008 18:04 (seventeen years ago)

There was a mix cd (done by Skinny Joey) released as well... http://www.discogs.com/release/1411450. There are some notable differences between the cd and vinyl releases, for instance I purchased Vol. 3 and was treated to a Brendan Moeller track that wasn't included in the mix.

But I think gr8080 was referring to the Deakin comp (Nu-Balearica on Ministry of Sound) which seemed to choose dull tracks in favor of a seamless mix. Which of course is boring.

psychgawsple, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 20:22 (seventeen years ago)

gr8080 otm, i think the homerun track really outshines nearly everything else on that mix. STILL haven't heard the deakin mix, tho

donna rouge, Wednesday, 29 October 2008 21:12 (seventeen years ago)

xp no i was referring to the cosmic balearic beats one

didnt know about the unmixed 12"s

♪☺♫☻ (gr8080), Wednesday, 29 October 2008 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

they should have just gone with the same format as the computer incarnations for world peace series

♪☺♫☻ (gr8080), Wednesday, 29 October 2008 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, a few of those tracks are throwaways frankly...

xpost i liked the Deakin mix though, there's tons of my favorites from last year on there...

mikebee (BATTAGS), Thursday, 30 October 2008 07:14 (seventeen years ago)

the deakin one is too long to listen to all at once but there's some great stuff on there, I dig it

dmr, Thursday, 30 October 2008 14:53 (seventeen years ago)

The Cosmic Balearic Beats comp is available unmixed on iTunes and (I think) Beatport, with the mix stuck on the end as a long hour+ track, similar to what !K7 did with the Carl Craig comp.

Telephone thing, Thursday, 30 October 2008 18:50 (seventeen years ago)

are you sure its unmixed and not just separate tracks?

♪☺♫☻ (gr8080), Thursday, 30 October 2008 18:54 (seventeen years ago)

The Aeroplane remix of Grace Jones' "Williams Blood" is just lovely, albeit a bit LOL AEROPLANE.

Tim F, Thursday, 30 October 2008 21:07 (seventeen years ago)

The Homerun track on the Turbo Mind Vacuum 3 compilation is great too.

braveclub, Friday, 31 October 2008 12:03 (seventeen years ago)

gr8080, I bought Cosmic Balearic beats on iTunes and you get all the individual tracks unmixed, full length, and then the cd version as a single track, so it works out as good value.

has anyone heard this?

http://carletoncurtis.transworld.net/files/2008/08/seasiderock.jpg

They sorta came out of nowhere with this all-instrumental follow up album of wistful balearic tunes. A pleasant listen, nothing earth-shattering but it's a nice statement.

psychgawsple, Friday, 31 October 2008 20:09 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe it wasn't out of nowhere. I have some balearic comp from a few years back with "young folks" on it... (((shivers))). I would pay money to never have to hear that song again.

And I think they're from Gothenburg too. I guess that's sorta ground-zero for this scene.

psychgawsple, Friday, 31 October 2008 20:14 (seventeen years ago)

That Aeroplane remix of Grace Jones is awesome.

Matt DC, Sunday, 2 November 2008 18:56 (seventeen years ago)

I can't believe nobody's mentioned the Prins Tomas James Yuill (?) remix thing. Its what I wanted that Erlend Oye album to be.

Re the Grace Jones Aeroplane Remix - it occurs to me that they are the Jacques Lu Cont of Balearic now.

how so

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 02:56 (seventeen years ago)

Big mainstream/crossover producers with kind of electro/disco sound to them?

Kind of heavily trance influenced?

I guess I can see it. Who's the Ewan Pearson then? Todd Terje?

Siah Alan, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 02:58 (seventeen years ago)

Actually what Aeroplane remind me of most is Patrick Cowley style High NRG, only at like 115 BPM.

Low NRG?

is diskjokke too electrohouse for this thread?

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 03:04 (seventeen years ago)

i got the windsurf album today. surprised there were vocals on a couple of tracks. it's good, but i doubt i will listen to all 70 minutes of it at once.

i also really like diskjokke. is he electrohouse?

mizzell, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 03:42 (seventeen years ago)

i like his lykke li remix (which could maybe fit on this thread, at least bpm-wise)

donna rouge, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 04:22 (seventeen years ago)

"is diskjokke too electrohouse for this thread?"

Yeah maybe. He reminds me of this comp. I loved his almost Finger Lickin' track on the Sunkissed mix, need to check his album.

Aeroplane = JLC insofar as with each production they're sounding less and like typical balearic and more and more like the production team for a sequel to Confessions on the Dancefloor - sweeping, epic, trancey, pop, smooth, and not automatically aligned with any clique or revivalist trend. That obsession with hyper-smooth layering in particular is key - there's no warp'n'weft or contrast, it's more like the tide going in and out.

Much in the same way that throughout 2004 and into 2005 JLC was drifting further from lol electro-house (e.g The Faint remix, still one of my faves tho) and more into his own super-sleek soundworld.

I think Lindstrom is the Ewan Pearson of balearic. Todd Terje is maybe the Freeform Five of balearic.

Tim F, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 04:40 (seventeen years ago)

what is lol electrohouse

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 04:41 (seventeen years ago)

Tim F, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 04:57 (seventeen years ago)

i posted the diskjokke track cearadactylus to my blog when i picked it up of the Full Pupp Greatest Tits comp. super stuff, i dunno if you could call it electro house at all though, there are none of the typical buzzy synth drops and the crescendos arent nearly as predictable. maybe i'm going off of only a few tracks, but I feel he is just a housier version of all this scando disco/house that has been coming off of full pupp. but please dont call him electro house

i think electrohouse is the best description we've got. not necessarily blog house. scando house?

well certainly its not blog house, i think all the shitty nurave and rap mashups when i hear that. scando house is something i guess i use for all the scandinavian dance acts appearing on labels such as Full Pupp and even Prins Thomas' own production stuff, usually its loaded with percussion, much more so than most the electrohouse i've heard, sometimes it has acid synths, sometimes lush pads/or pianos, and most of the crescendos happen more gradually...

for example, blackbelt andersen, magunus international, ytre rymden dansskola...

Bomb Bomb Iran (san frandisco), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 22:08 (seventeen years ago)

now that i think about it i can't think of any other labels releasing stuff like it, so maybe just full pupp?

Bomb Bomb Iran (san frandisco), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 22:09 (seventeen years ago)

As I implied upthread, much of what I've heard by Diskjokke actually reminds me of breakbeaty or big-beaty attempts at house more than electro-house... remember the Bolshi label? Rasmus?
