only thing i don't like about this album is RZA saying "fuck the freckles off your face bitch"

he was terrible on that James Blake track. has he had any decent guest spots in the last few years?

also i think it's kinda charming when there are little parts of verses or phrases or w/e that i can hear exactly in MF Doom's voice, just perfectly Doom

i don't really like RZA on their just in concept, i don't want famous guest appearances on earl's shit, i like how it's all insular and crew-only (like early wu-tang actually!) even though i get that rza is probably a touchstone for these guys
― usic for 18 magicians (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 22 August 2013 19:51 (twelve years ago)
otm
― s. cloverlandthug (The Reverend), Thursday, 22 August 2013 20:52 (twelve years ago)
the way he's used tho feels more like a dropped-in sample (even if the recording is original) than a real guest appearance tho. even if it still doesn't really work.
― s. cloverlandthug (The Reverend), Thursday, 22 August 2013 20:53 (twelve years ago)
everybody loves this album. in case you didn't know. ann powers was raving about it today on facebook! i haven't heard it yet.

― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 22 August 2013 21:10 (twelve years ago)
Record is boring and underwhelming. It's the Lincoln of 2013 rap albums, a prestige effort that was pedigreed into good reviews, but that even critics who bestowed it with high ratings won't feel passionate about in a year
― Evan R, Thursday, 22 August 2013 21:12 (twelve years ago)
Honestly I'd rather bump Yeezus, even if this record has 3-4 cuts that could maybe rate a year end tracks list for me.
― Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 22 August 2013 21:18 (twelve years ago)
how is this a "prestige effort"? what does that even mean

Prodigy/Alchemist shaping up to be the best rap album of the year for me
― Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 22 August 2013 21:21 (twelve years ago)
too bad we can only like one rap album per year ;_;
― s. cloverlandthug (The Reverend), Thursday, 22 August 2013 21:21 (twelve years ago)
I'm guessing "prestige effort" = "preemptive sacred cow"

now THAT album i love. i have a beautiful original pressing of it. so magical. and strange in its way.
― scott seward, Thursday, 22 August 2013 21:30 (twelve years ago)
i think whether this is disappointing or not kinda depends on whether you are viewing it as a dusted weird underground rap record or an "event" album like watch the throne or good kid, m.a.a.d. city....
the spin review was otm in saying that earl's profile in the press has kinda meant this album has expectations that it wasn't created to meet
like it should be judged alongside ka's the night gambit or something not kendrick or drake or w/e
― usic for 18 magicians (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 22 August 2013 22:16 (twelve years ago)
Chum, whoa, Sunday, Burgundy, maybe one other
But I don't regret buying the album on itunes

i like em both for different reasons, i like the sloppiness of the whole earl album
― usic for 18 magicians (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 22 August 2013 22:44 (twelve years ago)
i feel like the entire Odd Future aesthetic was painstakingly carved out of all the little corners of the history of hip-hop production and lyricism that i have absolutely no affection for

was looking forward to this, but am also finding it a bit boring - lacking the puerile guignol and malignant mischeif of the first album (or the turns on Radical, Blackenedwhite and Earmilk). Earl's voice is still captivating, just find his manner more limited than before. Hmm, listening now and not sure that's fair, maybe it's the music - will give it more goes - still find that early OFWGKTA stuff fascinating and it's great to have a new Earl LP.
Just one thing, and he's in no way alone in this - wish he wouldn't do that thing having a go at 'the critics'. Go the MES route and NAME them - yr enemies - otherwise it's meaningless and also slightly laughable for someone so generally critically praised.

OTM. This ruins, for me, what should have been the best track on the album.
Also, second half > first half, "Chum" and "Burgundy" aside.
― Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Friday, 23 August 2013 18:13 (twelve years ago)
there's also this way that RZA has of almost pronouncing words like "freckles" like "fweckles" but he doesn't quite do it and it's this weird imaginary letter that's between "R" and "W" that only RZA knows and it sounds like shit to me
― everything I do is funky like Debussy (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 23 August 2013 18:15 (twelve years ago)

its fun
Yeah, it's really good, starting to think that Tyler's output might be the weakest of the gang.
― Van Horn Street, Friday, 30 August 2013 17:34 (twelve years ago)
^regardless of what you think of OFWGKTA, I think that, a couple of clear exceptions aside, is clearly the case. To what extent does his (to me fairly moribund) musical influence permeate the others' stuff?
― Fizzles, Friday, 30 August 2013 18:06 (twelve years ago)
In terms of who influences who, have no idea how OFWGKTA works, but I came to enjoy Tyler way more when he is on other people's tracks. The thing is that he doesn't seem to care that much about making music like Earl, Frank Ocean and perhaps to a lesser extent, Domo Genesis. I feel Tyler's album are there to be there, because to do what he is doing he needs to releases album. That being said, I would have been way more excited about Odd Future if it wasn't for Tyler's antics, but I can totally see how people would feel the exact opposite. It's hard to tell really.
― Van Horn Street, Friday, 30 August 2013 18:34 (twelve years ago)
Tyler seems to enjoy that act of entertaining way more than Earl and Frank do. He's not always successful at it, but I usually appreciate the effort.
