Ty Segall - C or D?

So Segall did an all-folk-minimalist-record.

oh well, i'll wait for the Fuzz project.

I'm really digging the album. I hear a lot of Neil Young in this, which is obviously always a good thing imo.

ha yeah, "all-folk-minimalist-record" sounds like a good move to me.

it's ok, but not really challenging i think.

maybe it deserves more spinning to decide though

yeah, it was pretty nice but gave me a bit of a "I've listened to barrett/bolan and you sir are no barrett/bolan" feeling

The best Segall records are his collaborations. (White Fence, Cronin, Epsilons..)

He should stick to that formula imo

Pretty stoked on this Fuzz stuff. Really dig all the singles - none of which are on the LP!

I saw FUZZ live on Friday night at the Tufnell Park Dome. They totally killed it. Segall is an animal of a drummer and the riffs are just so huge... I love the singles, but live, stripped of the slightly distant reverb, the tunes are just monstrous. I kind of think they could be huge.

gah, want the fancy-ass version of the FUZZ lp so dang bad. somebody please send one to me for no reason at all.

also hope to make one of the mass shows in a couple weeks.

Along with the Fence collaboration imo.

i'm not feeling the fuzz so much, miss his squally guitars, but its a good record

Just now getting to the Fuzz album and it's so good. Some sick guitar on there.

so the new one is pretty straightforward psychedlic garage. and it's good.

arrangements are much better than usual.
he/they learned how to play the instruments.

need to go find this...

it's great. buy it. (when its out).

liking a lot of this but the guitar solo passages sort of distract me from everything else. bet it will rip live though!

its his longest album yet, isn't it?

yeah, it's 17 songs, and some push four minutes. it's good but i can't decide if it's too long. i think it might be.

production is awesome.
the problem is the songwriting. it's kinda generic Ty style.

i love it. its harder to digest in one go than, say, melted. but its excellent.

yeah i'm holding judgment until i get to listen all the way through a few more times. i have faith in him! so excited to see him soon. bummed i missed the Fuzz tour:

It sounds really retro. Like way more retro than his other stuff. I prefer the rocked-out version of "Feel" from Conan to the album version.

yes, more straightforwardly classic rockin to these ears ... still fresh tho

i still think Hair and Fuzz are the best things he done.

Manipulator is his third best i guess imo.

there are a few different drummers i believe, the lady who toured with him on a few, him on some, and i think chris wodehouse who is from that whole san fran psych/garage thing.

still think the album is a little too long and some of the guitar solos are sort of distracting/crappy but overall i really dug it

their touring drummer is Emily Epstein -- she's been playing drums for Ty for a few years -- she moved down to LA last year

Super solid fun record! Drags a bit in spots maybe - but good dirty sound, really hooky tunes - almost verging on a scrappy sprightly version of Deep Purple or Sabbath riffage. I haven't heard everything, but Manipulator seems like a breakthrough of sorts.

Seems like everyone very keen to tag this as ' break through' when it actually appears to be struggling for any more traction than previous records. Everyone seems to get that he is a solid songwriter but he does not seem to have found X FaCtor song. Not that I think that is necessarily some kind of noble goal to crave or is necessary but it is curious to me how much of the narrative around this record is about taking things to the ' next level'

It does seem like a bit more thought out and cohesive and tuneful record than others to me - and maybe a bit more conventional. I don't think anyone really expects a huge hit record out of the guy.

m recently and he instantly sold out a club he'd played before to solid but far from sold out crowd, also have a couple of friends who are into more commercial band like black keys, qotsa, etc get into him now

Oh well sounds like he is doing better with thiS than I thought then. Good for him.

it might be more momentum than the last album specifically, but i'm hearing a lot more friends/coworkers talking about the guy.

I like Mikal Cronin's last two records a lot more than any of this stuff

Hmm... I tried one Mikal Cronin song on Youtube. It was OK I guess, but it didn't sound anything like Fuzz. I was a bit skeptical if I needed a double-album's worth of more Fuzz but I ended up listening all the way through to the NPR stream.

Cronin's debut is excellent, heavy Segall-strafed power-pop. His second was pleasant, but I found the third dull, though I didn't listen to it enough to be fair. He's no Ty.
