seems like there's a kind of instructive pairing here in Gaga going for depth/relevance/meta-something and wiping out and Katy Perry playing it safe by keeping it uber-cliché

this song also makes me think of "stronger" by kelly clarkson, and it suffers in the comparison

No! When that iconoclasm works (as it does on BTW), I love it - my only complaint about BTW now is that it's too long.

some (or many) of the lyrics are borderline terrible so i try really hard not to listen to them (tho yes, the reading one is likably silly). however the tune is quite something. overall i am pleased. seems weird to compare them but i guess since they had the same release date i will say it is certainly better than katy perry's offering.

gaga's self-obsession annoys me sometimes (often) but really, for some reason this song sits pretty well with me

omg

i like the pre-chorus part of this ("i live for the applause") a whole lot but the rest of it is kind of a mess. the chorus isn't bad per se but her songwriting is usually very clear and strong and this to me is just kind of chaotic and messy for no reason

i keep hearing Mannequin by Britney Spears in the chorus which i think is a good look, didn't really put this together until now

"give me the thing that i love, i'll turn the lights on" is the best bit

i like the whole chorus actually, the part quoted above being my favorite part

music video is kind of w/e

Song and video both seem like kind of a rush job. One of the other leaked tracks I've heard ("Aura") is a lot better.

Watching the video, I keep thinking that she almost looks like Macklemore at points.

"Mannequin" OTM; what I thought of was "Womanizer." there's a part of lady gaga who will never stop being a writer for britney spears circa _Circus_ and it's why all her tangents still result in decent pop songs

mannequin is about 100x better tho.

I like this but am really surprised at how indistinguishable all the vocals are in the chorus! I didn't even know recognize she was spelling out "Applause" until I watched the lyric video to find out.

OTM I think that's song's biggest problem. The chorus is really blurry and it takes a couple of listens before you can make out the melody and I couldn't figure out its lyrics without looking them up. I do like it now, but I don't understand why they made it so difficult to hear.
