I heard my 51-year-old editor say the words "Daft Punk" out loud for the first time today, so thanks Stephen Colbert.
― pplains, Thursday, 8 August 2013 21:19 (twelve years ago)
maybe daft punk wanted to be on colbert and the vmas and then when they couldn't do both due to network bs they decided to go w/ vmas. maybe what they really wanted to do all along was the vmas cuz man remember madonna's garter and prince's buttcheeks and that one time the edge sang or rapped or whatever in front of some tvs plus you can reash 6-12 million ppl for five minutes work - do you now how many shows you would have to play to reach 6-12 million ppl? and the expense, mon dieu! and then maybe someone was like hey the colbert ppl want to know if you'd be interested in doing this thing, you wouldn't have to perform or talk even, just show up and give them an excuse for a viral clip, i think it'd be good for the brand, whattya say guys - yes? yes? ok i'll tell them that's a yes and then the sunday before thomas rings up guy and is like bon soir guy, remember we have zat thing with stefan colbert tuesday, do not get too fucked up the night before mon petit amis! and then the next day the same lackey or maybe a different lackey who can even tell tells them bad news guys, colberts off, mtv wants an exclusive for the vmas and thomas is like o good i can see pacific rim again before it leaves theaters and then tuesday morning he opens the ny times and zut alors. or maybe they were like lol this guy's sister couldn't even beat mark sanford sure we'll do yr show durrr. maybe it's an elaborate scheme they've got going w/ ryan adams and we have to wait to find out what musician that had a kinda hit in 2001 is gonna no-show lawrence o'donnell. maybe they're jewel thieves.

Can't wait for Daft Punk to start but oh no here comes Viacom's Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert onstage to stop the show and say to the robots "Imma gonna let you finish but The Residents were the best band to wear stupid masks and hide their identities" and won't that be something?

Wait, did they not even perform at the VMAs after that whole Colbert thing?
― Greer, Monday, 26 August 2013 05:44 (twelve years ago)
they've always said they wouldn't perform any songs from this record
― crüt, Monday, 26 August 2013 05:51 (twelve years ago)
idk what good could possibly come from a live performance of any of their work tbh, unless they want to do a rollin and scratchin vinyl dj set
― crüt, Monday, 26 August 2013 05:52 (twelve years ago)
So MTV fought a Colbert appearance over this? If they weren't performing in either I don't see what the fuzz was all about. It was more of a promo for their new video that looks almost exactly as the other but with United Colors of Benetton people being all clappy happy.

also, youd think he had better/less overplayed chic songs than good times or hes the greatest dancer... dissapointed too (though not that surprised) with the lack of dance music on there.
― StillAdvance, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 10:02 (twelve years ago)
1) it's a promo spotify playlist for RAM1a) much of whose audience won't know the contributors' work2) it does include Why which is Chic's, and possibly the universe's secret best song ever3) if your choice is between giving someone a chance to listen to He's The Greatest Dancer, and appearing cool by suggesting something obscure, the former is never a wrong decision; the latter often could be

― s. cloverlandthug (The Reverend), Wednesday, 28 August 2013 19:56 (twelve years ago)
I haven't opened the link but based on this comments I'm sure the playlist is very similar to one I saw them submit before somewhere that's pretty much two or three songs from each collaborator on RAM (strokes, panda bear, chilly, moroder, chic/nile contributions, paul williams, nerd)

I just figured out the reason "Lose Yourself to Dance" is awesome is cause it sounds like DJ Quik

I've finally come around to Lose Yourself to Dance; it's kinda perfect late-summer music.

I'd love "Lose Yourself to Dance" if Pharrell were drawn and quartered and his death throes were recorded over his original vocal.

― AlXTC from Paris, Monday, 2 September 2013 09:53 (twelve years ago)
dj quik would give lose yourself a lot more handclaps...
― StillAdvance, Monday, 2 September 2013 21:15 (twelve years ago)
The handclaps (and tempo) are what made me think of DJ Quik in the first place! If anything, the mid-tempo 4x4 stomp-clap funk groove places it in the 90s, rather than the Nile Rodgers red herring would indicate. Or if in the 70s, at the wrong end of the 70s -- the groove is more "Superstition" than "Le Freak".
