Truth be told, I was just looking for a reason to bash Daft Punk because Random Access Memories sucks. And I like Stephen Colbert. This isn't really about them not showing up.

(Also, fuck MTV.)

There were crucial papers that said Viacom would be wholly responsible for when to book musical guests and where. This was unprecedented, basically ending the reign of the Colbert Report being able to book its own guests, splintering it and the Daily Show. The shock waves this sent through the corridors of Manhattan and Daft Punk in effect handing all power back to MTV. It was crushing.

Mostly I'm shocked that more people watch the VMA's than any random episode of the Colbert Report.

If DP really cared about exposure they should have a) made an album of dance music and b) toured.

I just watched the Stephen Colbert video and it is interesting to note that it never gets to the part in the song with the robot voices. I'm wondering if the initial plan was to just use that video, maybe with a live band backing the song instead of a recording, but have Stephen Colbert dance with Daft Punk during the vocoder break down.

It was a joke but a lame one. I still think "It's the one night MTV plays music videos!" jokes are funny. I'm old.

No need to be dickish. I was just responding to someone who suggested they chose to do the VMAs for the exposure, and I was just saying that's a bit rich from a group that's not touring. DP doesn't need to make any appearances, or albums, if it doesn't want to. Nor does the group have to appear on the VMAs, of all things. The album's a success by any commercial standard, really. I'm surprised they're doing any further promo for it at all, really.

Per the dance stuff, I'm mostly just making fun of the album some more, which is anything but a bunch of "Get Lucky." But along the aforementioned lines, if the band wanted more "exposure," it could have easily stuffed it with a dozen retro disco tracks. But it didn't. This album does not seem designed to make you dance, by and large. It's the thinking man's dance album, and by that I mean the sitting man's.

I heard my 51-year-old editor say the words "Daft Punk" out loud for the first time today, so thanks Stephen Colbert.

maybe daft punk wanted to be on colbert and the vmas and then when they couldn't do both due to network bs they decided to go w/ vmas. maybe what they really wanted to do all along was the vmas cuz man remember madonna's garter and prince's buttcheeks and that one time the edge sang or rapped or whatever in front of some tvs plus you can reash 6-12 million ppl for five minutes work - do you now how many shows you would have to play to reach 6-12 million ppl? and the expense, mon dieu! and then maybe someone was like hey the colbert ppl want to know if you'd be interested in doing this thing, you wouldn't have to perform or talk even, just show up and give them an excuse for a viral clip, i think it'd be good for the brand, whattya say guys - yes? yes? ok i'll tell them that's a yes and then the sunday before thomas rings up guy and is like bon soir guy, remember we have zat thing with stefan colbert tuesday, do not get too fucked up the night before mon petit amis! and then the next day the same lackey or maybe a different lackey who can even tell tells them bad news guys, colberts off, mtv wants an exclusive for the vmas and thomas is like o good i can see pacific rim again before it leaves theaters and then tuesday morning he opens the ny times and zut alors. or maybe they were like lol this guy's sister couldn't even beat mark sanford sure we'll do yr show durrr. maybe it's an elaborate scheme they've got going w/ ryan adams and we have to wait to find out what musician that had a kinda hit in 2001 is gonna no-show lawrence o'donnell. maybe they're jewel thieves.

So MTV fought a Colbert appearance over this? If they weren't performing in either I don't see what the fuzz was all about. It was more of a promo for their new video that looks almost exactly as the other but with United Colors of Benetton people being all clappy happy.
