nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 4 January 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Is anyone else going to see them in London next Tuesday?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 19 February 2004 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Got sent their new single ('Tropical Ice-Island'). It's really, really good. However, it comes up on Windows Media Player as Lenny Kravitz's Are You Gonna Go My Way. Why?

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

because that is the bedrock from which all contemporary music derives

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

wow i mixed metaphors like nobody's business

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

whose business is it to mix metaphors anyhow and are they hiring?

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

hmm, I have been invited to see them, on saturday. I have never heard anything by them.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I still haven't managed to listen beyond track 5 on their album.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

the video is quite cute. i like them much better on record than live, but the show i saw was at north six in brooklyn - an irritating venue with a very unfriendly stage so perhaps it was unrepresentative.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

lauren check yr email

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

RJG - go, I implore you. I have been listening to their lp to the exclusion of almost everything else for a few weeks now.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 19 February 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

If anyone has the new Tropical Ice-Land single on slsk, please let me know! I ordered it online, but I'm not expecting it for another week or two, and I really really really want to hear it because I love the live arrangement of the song.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 19 February 2004 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a clip of the video here.

The new version is sooooo great!

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 19 February 2004 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

What's different about the new version? Because the album version was my favorite track on that album; I think I will be resistant to any changes.

Scott, Thursday, 19 February 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a new arrangement. It's more up-tempo, and extremely cheerful-sounding. It's not radically different, just the same song in a different mood. It's fast, but not rocking or hard.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 19 February 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The new version is sooooo great!

UGH IT'S AWFUL WHY DID THEY DO THAT??

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 19 February 2004 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't go see them live, then. They play almost everything with different arrangements. I remember the live version of "Tropical Iceland" as being even faster than the single version.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 19 February 2004 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I have seen them live, but that was well before the album came out. I missed their last NYC show.

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 19 February 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

RJG - go, I implore you.

OK!!

RJG (RJG), Friday, 20 February 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i might be there on tuesday!

prima fassy (mwah), Friday, 20 February 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 20 February 2004 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 21 February 2004 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I went!!!!!

here's what I said:

fiery furnaces were great, btw. they played 'coffee + TV' and 'baby elephant walk' and everything.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 February 2004 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

It's funny that this thread started with drummer talk because I really felt they could use somebody who'd just pound away, Black-Eyed Snakes-style. Maybe they don't wanna rock, who knows...

Pete Scholtes, Sunday, 22 February 2004 06:51 (twenty-two years ago)

the girl is hawt

the guy looks like xander

prima fassy (mwah), Sunday, 22 February 2004 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

So he's hawt, too.

Arthur (Arthur), Sunday, 22 February 2004 07:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw a video by them last week. the girl is 'hawt'. the music wasn't bad but I can't remember much abt it right now.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 22 February 2004 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

the girl is hawt. thirded innit.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 22 February 2004 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I am going to stick up for conventional beauty and say she is not hawt and ur all indie.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 22 February 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

'conventional beauty' => N are you one of those people who 'read' The sun?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 22 February 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, yes I am.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 22 February 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

n. thinks nicole kidman is hawt so he is not to be trusted

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I think N. just wanted her to look more like Euros Childs.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

If someone will post a picture of her then, in due course, I will give you a definitive answer.

the firefox, Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes surely it is time for a picture

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

See http://www.splendidezine.com/features/fiery/fieryhead.jpg

He looks better than that photo suggests, and she looks worse.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

They look entirely ordinary, I like that

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Flaming heck.

They're ugly!

the firefox, Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

that wasn't a good pic. it was too indie.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Your lack of dodgy indie aesthetics when it comes to women is one of the things I most admire about you, pinefox.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

She's a woman w/a bulgy oldstyle hairdo, let's rock

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I am being unfair though, she is an impressive, vaguely sexual stage performer. Halfway between Cat Power and Patti Smith.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

what is this indie piss?

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

She's called Eleanor, which I like, though the 'Friedberger' bit isn't so good. Or maybe it is, I don't know anymore.

There's another, enormous, picture here.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

She looks like someone's mom. Yawn.

anode (anode), Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread has taken a VERY distressing turn.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 22 February 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i was just about to say... the inevitable "hot or not."

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 22 February 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

It's important how bands look!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Sunday, 22 February 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, hence the endless threads devoted to how cute/not cute basement jaxx are.

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 22 February 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently it's only really important how female musicians look, Jerry.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 22 February 2004 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

lmao at her both looking the same and now driving the car. poor matthew

two months pass...

wait, Remember is the greatest shit ever? and none of you told me?

imago, Sunday, 28 September 2025 07:51 (eight months ago)

have found my way to The Diabolical Principle. so many final bosses, so little warning

imago, Tuesday, 30 September 2025 09:14 (eight months ago)

two weeks pass...

Saw them in Kingston on Friday. Played as a duo, just piano and vocals. They were clearly still working out the arrangements, and it was the first time I've ever seen Eleanor seem lacking in confidence, but they packed in so many great songs/melodies/moments. I was sitting with some people who were not familiar with them at all, and several lyrics caused them to laugh out loud, which I think is the right response.

mizzell, Tuesday, 14 October 2025 14:21 (seven months ago)

seven months pass...

i've never listened to this band, but my friend bought two tickets and asked me to accompany him to their show last night. it was incredible. same piano and vocals set that mizzell saw a year ago. i was giggling and smiling the entire time. i'm listening to their recordings now, and while i get the appeal of the chaotic/skronky full band sound, i think the material really shines in the current live set's format, because it puts the (hilarious) lyrics and eleanor's singing front and center. it almost felt more like a poetry reading than a live set. can't recommend it highly enough
