honestly, I used to have a playlist of this shit for like when I was trying to get to sleep at night, cuz cheesy ballads don't require much concentration, are usually earwormy, won't sound awesome enough to keep me awake active listening, and send me to the arena of my dreams. I don't really think of Winds of Change in this category, even though it is the Scorps. it's fun to whistle to in the car though so *shrug*

"Love Bites" does exactly what it sets out to do. Joe Elliott's meek vulnerability on "When we make looooooooooooove", the wall of voice harmonies that come in on the pre-chorus, and the monstrous chorus....boom.

Yeah I prefer 'Hysteria' 100 x more than 'Love Bites', and I love that whole album a TON.

I consider it one. at least with Def Leppard ballads, they knew how to do em right, with delightful bombast.

I know it ain't cool for us metal headbangaz to admit we like Hysteria but well I do... a lot. it's a great pop album.

the thing about "I'll Be Over You" is just how wonderfully over the top it is, just imagining a bunch of well-to-do studio musicians rock stars laying out their 15 year old melodrama without any irony.

I just looked at four undergrad textbooks on popular music or rock music. The only one that lists "power ballad" in its index is Covach's What's That Sound?. All he says is "[ i ]n a power ballad, the singer ... is given a chance to display his sensitive side, as the song often begins with a quiet expressive section, before the heavy guitars and drums enter to pump up the arrangement." He gives "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" as a representative example. This is pretty close to how I understand power ballads: the soft-loud contrast seems important to me. So in this sense, "Hysteria" wouldn't really be a power ballad in the way that "Love Bites" (or "Bringing On the Heartbreak") is. I don't know that there's any real hard-and-fast definition, though.

textbooks that don't cite Home Sweet Home as the textbook-definition of a power ballad are suspect imo

fun party guys can't be expected to bring the power, that's someone else's job

they bring partytimez and cuddles

'every rose' and 'silent lucidity' and 'when the children cry' and 'more than words' err too much on the side of sensitivity, you need to have less wimpy 'why is the world sad' proselytizing or james taylor begging and more 'momma let me tell you' type testifying.
