Seeing them tonight. To wear earplugs or not to wear earplugs? The future of my hearing is in your hands, ILM...
― my father will guide me up the stairs to bed (anagram), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 13:11 (twelve years ago)
you need earplugs
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 13:12 (twelve years ago)
as long as you do not have unusually heavy earplugs there is no downside I can see to bringing earplugs along. I needed them.
― woof, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 13:20 (twelve years ago)
oh bugger... i totally forgot about this tonite... i didn't buy a ticket..
just rang the venue and they told me that it's not sold out and that there are plenty of tickets available..
phew...
― Stop the tape I got spittle all over my moustache. (Talcum Mucker), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 13:27 (twelve years ago)
i brought good earplugs 4 years ago. occasionally took em out for a few seconds to hear the full force, tho.
― what does ;_; mean in remorse code (m bison), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 13:42 (twelve years ago)
yes to earplugs
― Please review your choices carefully. (seandalai), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 13:45 (twelve years ago)
occasionally took em out for a few seconds to hear the full force, tho.
yeah i did this too, my experience was that there was so much top end on the guitars that the sound with earplugs was a little more balanced
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 13:56 (twelve years ago)
I wear earplugs for every show these days, so yes to earplugs... especially MBV.
― Ex Slacker, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 17:14 (twelve years ago)

Annnnnd new interview at PF

― Ned Raggett, Friday, 9 August 2013 15:09 (twelve years ago)
LOVE this:
I’ll have to admit, I’m one of the few people I know who doesn't go crazy for Kraftwerk, I always found them a bit too mannered. But I like electronic music. I saw Skrillex the other night. The first half wasn’t so great to me, but the second half was really good-- more dubstep-y and broken up and crazy. I love when things bend out of shape. There’s a sense of freedom when you hear music like that. That’s why I love drum and bass music. When it first started, it was still elongated and experimental and always about the DJ blending things rather than focussing around a particular beat.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 9 August 2013 15:15 (twelve years ago)
LOVE skrillex
― am0n, Friday, 9 August 2013 15:35 (twelve years ago)
I was with some friends when the band first reunited. When they hit the stage, we all put our earplugs in except for one metal dude.
"Aren't you going to wear earplugs?" I asked."I just want to see what it's like first," he answered.
Two minutes pass.
"Yeah, that's loud," he says, putting in the plugs.

Really looking forward to brostep MBV u_u
― Chewshabadoo, Friday, 9 August 2013 19:13 (twelve years ago)
By the time that comes out we'll probably be in the brostep reappraisal phase.
― MarkoP, Friday, 9 August 2013 19:19 (twelve years ago)
Weird coincidence that this interview should appear the very day I listened to mbv for the first time in months. I still fucking love it.

― Ned Raggett, Monday, 12 August 2013 18:18 (twelve years ago)
Great interview. This part:
"I was purposefully not trying to write songs with a beginning, middle, and end," he says of the album's early days. "I was trying to pull myself away from the part of my brain that makes things linear and toward something more impressionistic."
is a great self-review and also explains why i have a hard time loving this record. I really enjoy it and it always seems fresh, but it lacks the satisfaction of standard song structures and repetitive hooks which was also always a part of his genius.
As much as I like 'm b v', it's quite a tease and I'm really hoping for: "more chord-based songs" "melodically very nice and pretty" and "huge, expansive, double-album masterpiece"...
― Spencer Chow, Monday, 12 August 2013 18:27 (twelve years ago)
the free-form exploration (which is in many cases on the album is just a reshuffling of the pattern that constitutes a "song") is what I enjoy the most about this album, I think
― OH MY GOD HE'S OOGLY (DJP), Monday, 12 August 2013 18:39 (twelve years ago)

The final album includes recordings from the 90s sessions as well as vocals, bass, drums, and other overdubs that were laid down in 2011 and 2012.
Immediately it made sense why that one song sounds like Dots and Loops-era Stereolab. Ah, because it was actually recorded in an era when Stereolab were a cool and popular band that were widely admired.

The PA power blew out three times and gave up completely by the end but honestly it didn't matter too much. Love the new songs live.
Big crowd for them too - people singing along to "You Made Me Realize," crowd surfing during "When You Sleep," loud "MBV! MBV! MBV!" from the audience afterward.
Love it when Deb & Colm get as many crowd shout outs as Blinda & Kevin.
― Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 04:06 (twelve years ago)
wtf at the ticket prices for their shows at Hammerstein in New York. $70 for floor and $120 for balcony. eat a dick MBV.
― dmr, Friday, 13 September 2013 16:32 (twelve years ago)
Yeah, I was into going until the prices came up. Oh well.
― Evan, Friday, 13 September 2013 16:33 (twelve years ago)
a friend went in SF and it was $50, and I heard in Chicago it was $30.
― dmr, Friday, 13 September 2013 16:36 (twelve years ago)
also the SF show didn't sell out
they didn't play chicago on this tour
― ᶓ͠סּᴥ͠סּᶔ ᶓͼ᷆ₓͼ᷇ᶔ (gr8080), Friday, 13 September 2013 16:43 (twelve years ago)
Philly they're only $37! Guys I am going to get to the box office 90 minutes before it opens but like is this a thang that is going to sell out *instantly*? Do you think? For a 2500-person venue?
― Baby, where'd you get Chobani from? (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 13 September 2013 16:48 (twelve years ago)
Like if I wait in line for an hour and a half and they're sold out by the time I get to the window I am gonna be PIIISSSSED. Someone yday seemed to imply that physical box offices aren't part of the same pool as phone/internet sales so even when it's sold out online/via phone there are sometimes still tix left IRL at the box office. Y or N?
― Baby, where'd you get Chobani from? (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 13 September 2013 16:49 (twelve years ago)
Seattle moved to a smaller venue & didn't sell out
― The Raekwon "If" Singers (sic), Friday, 13 September 2013 16:49 (twelve years ago)
Okay this gives me hope. Maybe I will get there way too early but at the very worst I get to chill outside for a while reading a book or talking to my mom on the phone or some shit that I'd be doing anyway somewhere else.
― Baby, where'd you get Chobani from? (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 13 September 2013 16:53 (twelve years ago)
oh my bad, it looks like a november show in chicago has been announced!!!!!

― Z S, Friday, 13 September 2013 17:28 (twelve years ago)
although maybe he said these things in an offhanded way and didn't realize it would become the headline. but it ends up making him look like they actually care about the mercury prize, which is a joke
― Z S, Friday, 13 September 2013 17:29 (twelve years ago)
I wonder if they'll be refunded the application fee
― owenf, Friday, 13 September 2013 19:01 (twelve years ago)
it actually sounds like old man rant/sour grapes.

"Isn't Mercury a phone company or something, anyway? What's that got to do with music?" Shields said in an exclusive interview.

In 1997, Mercury ceased to exist as a brand with its amalgamation into the operations of Cable & Wireless Communications,[2] and totally exited from the telecommunications business by 1999.
