How do we separate the early 90s power ballads above (Mr Big etc) from their late 80s equivalents? Just more acoustic guitars?

Kuschelrock means cuddle rock in German. It's a series of compilations that has now reached No. 26.

I had no idea there were that many remixes of "Winds of Change."

I wasn't aware there was any differences

Even the early 90s songs are not in the same style. Compared to Firehouse, Extreme and Queensryche were like art-rock bands who did concept albums. It's not 100% obvious from those two songs in isolation, maybe, but neither is a typical power ballad by any stretch, although they're both slow songs by hard rock bands. "More than Words" is a decent Everly Bros pastiche. "Silent Lucidity" is a decent Pink Floyd pastiche that's not even about a romantic/sexual relationship in any obvious sense. It's no more of a power ballad than "Comfortably Numb" is. If they came out in the past decade, they'd both probably be considered 'indie' (Plain White T's vs Muse?).

I don't really have the energy to listen to a tonne of songs by Firehouse, Warrant, Creed, etc to pick out the actual worst, though.

You've heard Mr Big and Firehouse and you pick "Sister Christian" as an all-time worst rock ballad?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 5 August 2013 22:54 (twelve years ago)

Sister Christian is retroactively redeemed by that scene in Boogie Nights.

sorry, those songs are just interminably dull rather than cosmically bad

i'll be your mraz (NickB), Monday, 5 August 2013 23:01 (twelve years ago)

That Tigertailz thing might be a real contender in that it doesn't even sound as competent as Firehouse.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 5 August 2013 23:05 (twelve years ago)

which does make it less nauseating to listen to tbf

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 5 August 2013 23:05 (twelve years ago)

kuschelrock is making my head hurt

i also can't believe there is a human alive with a still-beating heart who doesn't like "the flame" but whatever.

xxxxxpost: I once came across a compilation called The Best of Soft Metal which included, uh, "True" by Spandau Ballet among its tracks.

Bryan Adams, "Heaven," mostly for the ur-marshmellow snare sound.

I also love "Heaven" -- I belted it out in the car just yesterday, in fact! On my way to Target to get shelves for the closet. I mean, that's what these songs are good for.

"Every Rose Has Its Thorn" by Poison is awful.

Like, I like Cheap Trick and Foreigner too.

Dunno Tigertailz, Firehouse sang Love of a Lifetime? If so, no -- that song is awful.

Yep.

this stuff was really mega popular in the usa, right?

Journey to blame?

..it would have sounded about as heavy as Talulah Gosh. (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 5 August 2013 23:21 (twelve years ago)

weird how so many faceless rock bands had the standard #1 power ballad hit and Journey didn't.

arctic mindbath (President of the People's Republic of Antarctica), Monday, 5 August 2013 23:22 (twelve years ago)

well, members of Journey were in, as Robert Christgau said, the aptly named Bad English.

The one time I saw Cheap Trick they introduced "The Flame" by saying how much they hated it, and that they were essentially forced to record it. It's unclear what or whom exactly was forcing them to play the song at that show.

Esperanto, why don't you come to your senses? (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 5 August 2013 23:25 (twelve years ago)

when i was a kid, I didn't really listen to lyrics much, but from the bum warming his hands by the trash can fire in the video, I figured "where the down boys go" was to a homeless camp. like on some open letter to a landlord ish.

I did an air band to Bon Jovi's deep cut "Blood on Blood" in Gr 5, when I was 10. (Do they still do those in elementary schools??) I honestly had no idea when I was mouthing the words what "Danny knew this white trash girl/We each threw in a 10/She took us to this cheap motel/And turned us into men" was describing.

I have such a soft spot for the 80's ballads because they show and bring out the feminine side of these supposed hard guys who make womanizing an art form. They truly inside do feel mor for and about females than just the physical. And that is where the inspiration comes for alot of this romantic stuff. Yes some of it is contrived to make money at the time, but alot is also sincere and that is admirable. Guys need to start representing our gender better and showing females how special they are.

strangely i kinda think Steven Tyler's entire power ballad style during their 1987-1993 comeback period was a straight rip from Easy Like Sunday Morning.

omar little, Friday, 13 July 2018 00:45 (seven years ago)

Crying by Aerosmith is the worst offender.

Dinsdale, Saturday, 14 July 2018 05:59 (seven years ago)

Journey "Open Arms"
Michael Bolton "That's What Love Is All About"
Survivor "The Search Is Over"
Five For Fighting "Superman"
Bob Segar "Mainstreet"
Kid Rock "Only God Knows Why"
Hinder "Better Than Me"
Nickleback "If Everyone Cared"

billstevejim, Saturday, 14 July 2018 06:30 (seven years ago)

so that's a list of bad songs.

the following are good songs:
Silent Lucidity
Love Song
Love Bites
The Flame
I Want To Know What Love Is
Heaven

billstevejim, Saturday, 14 July 2018 06:35 (seven years ago)

The best Aerosmith power ballad besides "Dream On" is either "Angel" or "What It Takes" (not counting "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" since they didn't write it).
