Really? I don't think that would ever come in first. I'll definitely have one each by Nico/Cale/Tucker in my Top 20, maybe one more.

clemenza, Friday, 2 August 2013 05:18 (twelve years ago)

I anticipate my ballot will be roughly half VU/half solo.

OK, along with Stax/seandalai, who's going next?

kornrulez6969, step forward!

read that as "Stax/Stendhal" and was like, what a weird idea for a poll.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 2 August 2013 18:07 (twelve years ago)

I'll add it as an option!

Please review your choices carefully. (seandalai), Friday, 2 August 2013 18:12 (twelve years ago)

In light of the VU +/- solo poll discussion, I want to include a best solo-Floyd sub-poll but I'm risking poll fatigue. My tentative Floyd poll breakdown is:
- Top 30 Pink Floyd songs
- Top 10 Syd Barrett solo songs)
- Top 10 Gilmour/Waters/Wright/Mason solo songs (Gilmour vs. Waters fight is always fun and I want to see if anyone else will vote for something from Mason's album of car engine noises)
- Top 5 Pink Floyd bootlegs/live shows.

The sub-polls are optional of course, but I have a feeling that a lot a folks are going to vote and I don't want it to be more of an interrogation.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 2 August 2013 23:43 (twelve years ago)

that seems like a good idea, do the solo careers as optional subpolls.

some dude, Friday, 2 August 2013 23:48 (twelve years ago)

I like that idea too

though tbh I don't really care a ton about the solo stuff, but whatever I'm down for all of it because FLOYD RULES

assume THE FINAL CUT counts as solo Waters and MOMENTARY LAPSE counts as solo Gilmour yes?

resulting post (rogermexico.), Monday, 5 August 2013 00:41 (twelve years ago)

xps Gilmour's first solo record is fantastic fuiud

i don't see any reason to enforce the perception of certain records as 'not canon' in these polls -- people voting in the Clash poll had the option of voting for Cut The Crap if they wanted to, and they just (for the most part) didn't.

some dude, Monday, 5 August 2013 02:04 (twelve years ago)

i like that first gilmour solo lp also

balls, Monday, 5 August 2013 03:44 (twelve years ago)

omg guys i was totally kidding tho the degree to which that was taken seriously probably confirms the joek. p sure at least one track from one of those recds will make my ballot. also p sure i can't wait to vote for at least three Radio KAOS tracks on my non-barrett solo ballot.

resulting post (rogermexico.), Monday, 5 August 2013 04:54 (twelve years ago)

"High Hopes" from DIVISION BELL will probably just eke into my Floyd Top 30.

First Gilmour solo album is great.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 00:30 (twelve years ago)

This has been stated by others on this thread, but it bears repeating: The Bob Dylan poll should have a bigger ballot.

It will. I'm planning on allowing up to 50. Haven't settled on a scoring system, but probably something like this: normal scores for 1-20, then some lesser number (like 10 points each) for 21-30, and then maybe 5 points each for 31-50. That way people can vote for a lot of songs without spending forever trying to rank them individually.

Also, I think a 20-song minimum would be reasonable. But if people think that will discourage too many casual listeners I could be talked down to 10. OTOH if you don't have at least 20 Dylan songs you like, you probably won't vote anyway.

Hell, let's throw the list out the window and get Tipsy to do the Dylan poll.

Ha. I will be up for this anytime after mid-October. I have two big projects occupying me until then.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 12:53 (twelve years ago)

I've made similar posts before, but again, I think anyone who submits a ballot of any length should be counted. Dylan is one of only a few polls where I'll be submitting a fairly long ballot--not 50 songs, but probably 25-30. But for anyone who a) isn't crazy about Dylan, but b) for whatever reason, has always loved 5-10 songs, I understand. There are numerous artists who fall into that category for me. As you say yourself, most people who'd have a ballot that short won't vote anyway. But if anybody chooses to, far from messing up the results, a few short ballots provide some ballast--they'll probably be filled with famous songs (in my own experience, the shorter the list I submit, the more conventional it is), which, mixed in with the eccentric choices of more committed fans, is a good thing, I believe.

clemenza, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 15:01 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, totally - and those ballots are also a curative for people like me, who might underrate ''Like a Rolling Stone'' or whatever because I have a more personal relationship with these other songs, even though, in the abstract, I recognize that LARS was a hit for a reason and is really one damn fine song/performance. Helps avoid a comPLEtely wacky final result where the top 20 Dylan songs contain nothing anybody's heard of.

(Subterranean Homesick Blues will be #1, though. Mark my words!)

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 15:12 (twelve years ago)

seandalai, when do you plan to start the Stax poll?

Is anybody interested in doing a concurrent artist poll, or have we officially hit the summer doldrums?

things are going to get better or worse (WilliamC), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 15:34 (twelve years ago)

Because I'm a masochist, I'd offer to move the Elton John poll up to now as a palate cleanser unless somebody else wants to move his or hers up.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 15:39 (twelve years ago)

I'll start the Stax poll this week, just need to find a bit of time for prep.

Please review your choices carefully. (seandalai), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 15:41 (twelve years ago)

Voting will close end of August so there's plenty of time for someone to run a parallel artist poll.

Please review your choices carefully. (seandalai), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 15:41 (twelve years ago)

Elton just got out of the hospital yesterday--I'm sure he'd appreciate the pick-me-up.

clemenza, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 15:44 (twelve years ago)

JF -- my feeling is that anyone with energy and enthusiasm should go right ahead, and TAG, YOU'RE IT. Maybe give this thread a few hours at the top of SNA to see if anyone else wants to jump in.

things are going to get better or worse (WilliamC), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 15:45 (twelve years ago)

This is a totally self-serving offer, btw. I found out with Motown (and previous polls) that posting results makes the workday go by superfast.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 15:46 (twelve years ago)

That sounds like an offer to be full time pollmeister.

Do Elton, definitely - the missus and I were heavily anticipating the other night.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 15:50 (twelve years ago)

ALL YOUR POLLS ARE BELONG TO US

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 15:52 (twelve years ago)

Him or Oasis, or Floyd. I'm in the mood.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 15:52 (twelve years ago)

Where's the list gone anyway?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 15:52 (twelve years ago)

The most recent one.

I've never really listened to Elton, I'm looking forward to taking him on

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 16:31 (twelve years ago)

cor, Roxy-Floyd-Dan-Dylan is going to be quite the run

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 16:33 (twelve years ago)

Elton! Now there's an artist I can do a ballot for. Yes, please.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 16:43 (twelve years ago)

I've made similar posts before, but again, I think anyone who submits a ballot of any length should be counted.

I can see that argument. What bothers me is in ordered voting, if you only vote for 5 you get to assign huge amounts of points to just a few songs.

Maybe if you vote for fewer than 20, they will just all be assigned 10 points. That way the vote counts, but doesn't outweigh the votes of people who voted for 20 or more.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 16:55 (twelve years ago)

Agree with that. Whenever I submit a 5-10 song ballot, I usually suggest scaling down whatever points I've assigned (or don't assign any, and leave them up to the poll organizer).

clemenza, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 17:16 (twelve years ago)

Can't remember exactly, but I think it was crüt who sent a one-song ballot for Led Zeppelin. I can't even remember what that one song was now...

things are going to get better or worse (WilliamC), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 17:23 (twelve years ago)

When I get small ballots, I still start at the top of the allotted points schedule and count downwards. There's no reason someone's first place vote shouldn't get as much as someone else's, even if it's a short ballot.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 17:26 (twelve years ago)

^^^ my philosophy with short ballots also

things are going to get better or worse (WilliamC), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 17:27 (twelve years ago)

I can't remember what I do, but imo if you can only vote for a few tracks you should sacrifice your top five or so slots.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 17:31 (twelve years ago)

Okay, I'm gonna go ahead and get the Elton John voting thread ready in the next little bit. If anyone has an objection, speak now etc etc.

~

You get to assign the same no of points to yr top five as everyone else. To propose anything else is to promote false votes for an insincere bottom 40 or w/e imo
