Drew pretty goddamn OTM. Thank you for being that, Drew. Also, you write pretty good.

I've been working on this, I think we might finally have enough photos

staind in the place where you live (crüt), Friday, 2 August 2013 03:46 (twelve years ago)

I'm gonna use "Iris" though

staind in the place where you live (crüt), Friday, 2 August 2013 03:47 (twelve years ago)

Been thinking hard about the "accept the premise" aspect of this crap. There's a plot on a grid somewhere that puts the exceptional nature of the premise on one axis against the execution of the premise on the other; works are plotted on this grid and people's tolerances are drawn as curves to include or exclude the works so plotted. I think the more we record everything (and create compilations of antecedents, in their original form) maybe this starts to demand a Z axis specifically to represent anachronism; like, if there were well-known heiroglyphics of poop holes, dada might still be fuck you but it would be couched in respectable tradition of fuck you representations since civilization. And even the best executed poop hole performance by the most unexpected entrant into vienna actionism would still be (appropriately) shackled as homage rather than innovation.

Famous Performer shits onto a sidewalk from a Hilton, instagrams it: wow innovative (in a world where nobles taking demonstrative "society blows" shits off the hanging gardens was maybe a thing, but totally arcane trivia)
vs
same scenario: catchy but really why the hype, also, we expected more for the money (in a world where everybody had to read about the hanging garden rich kid dump stunt thing in 9th grade, and there is a channel on cable never shuts up about it except for 6 hours at a time)

I don't even know where I'm going with this other than still trying to synthesize a well-formed ethos to explain why this record, Radiohead, and a whole bunch of other shit piss me off to no end while other things don't. If you love music this much, and you want to make meta-music, step the fuck outside and let's DESTROY MUSIC ALREADY. BREAK ON THROUGH. STOP HALF ASSING, TALENT AND HARD WORK ARE NOT ENOUGH TO CHANGE ANYTHING. AARGH WASTED OPPORTUNITIES.

Good night gorilla.

El Tomboto, Friday, 2 August 2013 03:56 (twelve years ago)

I heard a rumor that this record was actually made by Banksy.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 2 August 2013 04:11 (twelve years ago)

is there a thread about the right words for this? contemporary exceptionalism, contemporary infrastructure, anachronism with the aim of nostalgia vs. without, ultimate exceptionalism. I just need to triangulate merzpop in 3D ok

El Tomboto, Friday, 2 August 2013 04:19 (twelve years ago)

what the hell are you even talking about now?

suggest bando (The Reverend), Friday, 2 August 2013 06:50 (twelve years ago)

he's talking about how much this album sucks

the late great, Friday, 2 August 2013 08:07 (twelve years ago)

op, op

staind in the place where you live (crüt), Friday, 2 August 2013 08:11 (twelve years ago)

get lucky would be better if it were get funky

conrad, Friday, 2 August 2013 08:56 (twelve years ago)

i want more people to do songs like the moroder one, where simply talking about a click track becomes the 'drop'.

StillAdvance, Friday, 2 August 2013 09:17 (twelve years ago)

Doin’ It Right” sounds shockingly clean, fresh, new and self-sufficient. Unconcerned about the past, the song seems slanted entirely towards the future

ive kinda grown tired of the album now and just relisten to individual songs alone - doin it right is the best song on there i think, purely for this reason. the historical tribute/reenactment of the rest of the album has marred it a bit for me, even though i still do love it for that same reason (in the same way i loved and then wondered what the point of dangelo's voodoo was, another record focused on period detail and glorious sonics), doin it right seems like what daft punk have always been great at, that retro future mode - its like the beach boys going trap/electro (but obviously better than and much less horrible than that reads).

StillAdvance, Friday, 2 August 2013 09:53 (twelve years ago)

not sure if this has been posted, heard it on KROQ:

http://pitchfork.com/news/51728-daft-punk-to-appear-on-the-colbert-report/

Now, it's been confirmed that Daft Punk will appear on "The Report" on Tuesday, August 6, as part of the "Colbchella" series.
So, yeah. This should be awesome.

Bee OK, Saturday, 3 August 2013 02:16 (twelve years ago)

so we're in the backlash phase of this album, before it comes back full circle and finishes in the top 5 in the ilm poll

JACK SQUAT about these Charlie Nobodies (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Saturday, 3 August 2013 02:42 (twelve years ago)

I had a personal backlash already. I didn't listen for 3 weeks. I bought a 5$ royal scam on vinyl and played this after. It was still great.

kaiju rolling stone cover (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 3 August 2013 04:21 (twelve years ago)

But obv royal scam for $5 is way better than this for $40. But I don't really think about music that way.

kaiju rolling stone cover (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 3 August 2013 04:22 (twelve years ago)

I scored the 1999 remastered CD of royal scam today. Everyone needs royal scam. Bring on a steel dan bluray box set.

( (brimstead), Saturday, 3 August 2013 04:26 (twelve years ago)

Yeah. I'm seeing them live for the first time in a few weeks.

kaiju rolling stone cover (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 3 August 2013 04:27 (twelve years ago)

Grew up on citizen. But hadn't bought all of the albums yet.

kaiju rolling stone cover (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 3 August 2013 04:28 (twelve years ago)

Listening to royal scam as a piece seriously made me question my countdown to ecstasy vote.

kaiju rolling stone cover (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 3 August 2013 04:29 (twelve years ago)

Citizen has all the albums + "fm" , right? no static at all...

( (brimstead), Saturday, 3 August 2013 04:30 (twelve years ago)

I'm an Aja man through and through

( (brimstead), Saturday, 3 August 2013 04:30 (twelve years ago)

i'm doing the Steely Dan poll and it will touchdown first quarter of 2014.

Bee OK, Saturday, 3 August 2013 04:32 (twelve years ago)

If it helps on the backlash narrative, I just wanna state clearly that I have hated this album from square one. It's daft punks load/reload moment IMO.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Saturday, 3 August 2013 04:40 (twelve years ago)

Before you get all tweaked, I didn't call it their "lulu"

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Saturday, 3 August 2013 04:44 (twelve years ago)

It doesn't help.

kaiju rolling stone cover (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 3 August 2013 06:04 (twelve years ago)

In fact, you submitted that information as a problem for the backlash narrative.

kaiju rolling stone cover (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 3 August 2013 06:05 (twelve years ago)

Good point!

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Saturday, 3 August 2013 06:19 (twelve years ago)

I was hoping to get credit as a backlash pioneer

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Saturday, 3 August 2013 06:21 (twelve years ago)

Are they going to bother with a second single from this? It must be about time to put out Lose Yourself to Dance.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 3 August 2013 07:32 (twelve years ago)

there's a Nile interview where he hints that it'll drop around the middle of this month

staind in the place where you live (crüt), Saturday, 3 August 2013 13:42 (twelve years ago)

Also no backlash here. I've been listening to this album every day since it came out. Not the entire album, but a little bit each day. I can still get completely lost inside the Get Lucky vocoder part.

staind in the place where you live (crüt), Saturday, 3 August 2013 13:44 (twelve years ago)

Doin’ It Right” sounds shockingly clean, fresh, new and self-sufficient. Unconcerned about the past, the song seems slanted entirely towards the future

Also agree with this. Wish the album was more like Doin' It Right, Contact and Motherboard.

MikoMcha, Saturday, 3 August 2013 14:21 (twelve years ago)

ditto; those are the three songs I bought off the album

THE WORINÐLVE (DJP), Saturday, 3 August 2013 14:26 (twelve years ago)

I saw Steely Dan last year or so perform "The Royal Scam" from start to finish, with Larry Carlton sitting it. It was awesome, even if the stranger next to me kept asking me to high-five her.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 3 August 2013 21:09 (twelve years ago)

the most important question: will i ever hear "black cow" w/o thinking of lord tariq and peter gunz?

markers, Saturday, 3 August 2013 21:12 (twelve years ago)

This album is ridiculously expensive on vinyl. $35-40 is way too much to charge for a new album. I'd love to buy it but there's no way i'm paying that price.

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 3 August 2013 21:23 (twelve years ago)

I agree! But I paid the price. ;_;

kaiju rolling stone cover (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 3 August 2013 21:32 (twelve years ago)

it's free on spotify

markers, Saturday, 3 August 2013 21:39 (twelve years ago)

*Plays RAM on spotify and "all right now" comes out of speakers*

kaiju rolling stone cover (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 3 August 2013 21:47 (twelve years ago)

"Contact" is the only one that doesn't really do anything for me. The rest is great.

balls, Monday, 5 August 2013 16:15 (twelve years ago)

Over the weekend, I heard someone pull out Get Lucky for karaoke for the first time. Sounded amazing...granted the singer was a karaoke expert and could really belt it.
