no it's ok leave the decisions to me lol

some dude, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 15:22 (twelve years ago)

Run Stax. I was looking forward to a break in between Motown and Stax, because the Motown thing left me more fatigued than I thought it would, and disco would've cleansed the palate. In the end, Stax is different enough that it won't just seem like a continuation of the last month's worth of Motown listening. (But close.)

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 15:25 (twelve years ago)

Both Stax and disco would have a sense of continuation in my case ... I mean, had I gotten myself together and voted in Motown.

Boven is het stil (Eric H.), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 15:28 (twelve years ago)

STAX! failing disco, then I say yes to Stax

the pen is mightier than the penisword (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 1 August 2013 03:15 (twelve years ago)

(artist ballots are allowing 30 lately and we're talking stuff like the clash, not the deepest catalog)

tbf they had the equiv of nine LPs (ten if you count Spirit Of St Louis, which no-one did), a few EPs, and most of their singles (& all their b-sides) were non-album - lots more than the VU

Paging chap! Time for a Tom Waits poll!

things are going to get better or worse (WilliamC), Thursday, 1 August 2013 13:28 (twelve years ago)

btw I dislike the stretching of ballots to 30 or 40 or more; it makes voting feel a much more onerous task and I'm sure puts people off.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 1 August 2013 13:40 (twelve years ago)

^^ agree. plus i'm all for forcing the hard decisions. not being able to vote for everything is part of the fun.

resulting post (rogermexico.), Thursday, 1 August 2013 17:43 (twelve years ago)

Absolutely.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 1 August 2013 17:45 (twelve years ago)

FTR, I'd have to make hard decisions if the disco poll had ballots of 100.

Boven is het stil (Eric H.), Thursday, 1 August 2013 18:22 (twelve years ago)

This varies for me from poll to poll. When the artist has a deep catalogue, even a 25-30 vote ballot is frustrating, because there are probably close to that many consensus-pick classics (ie, the stuff that makes up their two-disc 'best of' or w/e) and it becomes hard for personal-beloved songs to make an impact. The Paul Simon poll was this for me, but that may just be a case of an artist where I really do know almost everything they've put out, and know it well. OTOH, with artists I don't know all that well, the long ballot totally talks me out of participating - if I don't have 30 songs readily to hand, surely I have no business even voting, and will just mess up the results!

I wonder if things like the AG/balls ballot, where you could choose where to split your ballot between ranked choices and one-point-apiece picks, or to do only one or the other, might be a model. I believe many polls do allow you to vote for "up to" a certain number but devices like this make it seem more normal/okay.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 1 August 2013 18:31 (twelve years ago)

we allowed upto 100 for the last one and more than half the ballots did so. A few people did the minimum allowed. Nobody is forced to do the max. Give people the option for larger and if they want to do it they will and it really shouldnt put off others as they have a minimum choice.
Anyone who is put off must be looking for an excuse

Anyone who is put off must be looking for an excuse

Do you think antagonism is productive, or does it just make you feel better?

things are going to get better or worse (WilliamC), Thursday, 1 August 2013 18:50 (twelve years ago)

AG, I'm not sure how to take your response, especially since I thought I was complimenting the way you did the ballots. I don't think I'm "looking for an excuse" when I hold back from doing a ballot for an artist where I really love 2-3 albums but don't know the larger catalogue - who am I to say that these songs I know are better than these other songs I don't know? Some polls just have the 'feel' of being kind of like things that would otherwise be on an artist-specific message board, but turn out to have just such a large community of fans on ILX that it can work here. Nothing wrong with that at all, but they're not polls I'm inclined to fill out ballots for if I don't know at least most of the canonical material. Great thing with, e.g. the Beach Boys results was all the 70s stuff I'd never heard before, coming out because many of the voters really were Beach Boys heads.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 1 August 2013 18:55 (twelve years ago)

I don't really think large (>25) ballots are needed for any single artist. For genre/decade/label polls it can make sense (for both voters and organisers) to have big ballots. From a voting perspective, the only thing that "intimidates" me is the size of the discography relative to my interest in exploring it - I won't vote in a poll unless I have a good idea of the catalogue by the time the deadline comes around.

if you tolerate this, your children will be sexting (seandalai), Thursday, 1 August 2013 19:17 (twelve years ago)

doctor casino i wasnt trying to antagonise you.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 1 August 2013 19:28 (twelve years ago)

This has been stated by others on this thread, but it bears repeating: The Bob Dylan poll should have a bigger ballot.

Uncle Cyril O'Boogie (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 1 August 2013 19:35 (twelve years ago)

yeah if any poll should, it's that one. every poll's different, details like that should be up to the person running it.

some dude, Thursday, 1 August 2013 19:39 (twelve years ago)

So wait am I on the list for the vu/solo poll or what?

hands up who would vote in a solo only poll? Obviously a lot of cale partisans here

joe schmoladoo from 7-11 (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 1 August 2013 19:43 (twelve years ago)

I would vote in a VU+solo poll but probably not in a solo-only poll. Not sure I can justify that, but hey.

if you tolerate this, your children will be sexting (seandalai), Thursday, 1 August 2013 19:49 (twelve years ago)

ditto

some dude, Thursday, 1 August 2013 19:52 (twelve years ago)

I'd probably vote in both but don't have a lot of interest in a solo only poll, might skip it because of the weather; whereas a VU + solo poll sounds like some kinda fun

Euler, Thursday, 1 August 2013 21:38 (twelve years ago)

ditto that ^^^

things are going to get better or worse (WilliamC), Thursday, 1 August 2013 21:42 (twelve years ago)

As above: strong vote for group + solo. (If it were solo-only, I'd vote, but it'd be a five-song ballot.)

clemenza, Thursday, 1 August 2013 21:56 (twelve years ago)

My oasis calls never counted huh

clique- your heels, together (darraghmac), Thursday, 1 August 2013 22:17 (twelve years ago)

Bit snowed under at work and with social commitments at the moment, is it possible to put it off for about three weeks? Definitely still up for it in the long run.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Thursday, 1 August 2013 22:20 (twelve years ago)

So Waits is on hold. R. Kelly or Elvis Costello?

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 1 August 2013 22:22 (twelve years ago)

Yeah start up Tom Waits, I'm gonna wait one or two slots while Jay Z goes and such.

― caek da killa (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Monday, July 29, 2013 8:47 PM (3 days ago)

Elvis C then, if kornrulez wants to start...? Hell, let's throw the list out the window and get Tipsy to do the Dylan poll.

things are going to get better or worse (WilliamC), Thursday, 1 August 2013 22:28 (twelve years ago)

I believe darragh's just volunteered to do Oasis

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 1 August 2013 22:31 (twelve years ago)

Not 'just', ctrl-f

clique- your heels, together (darraghmac), Thursday, 1 August 2013 22:42 (twelve years ago)

Do Costello before I do Kellz, yes.

Hooks on Phoenix worked for me (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 1 August 2013 22:56 (twelve years ago)

I thought you were trying to get somebody else to do an Oasis poll, not volunteering to do it yourself. Sorry if I misread it.

cool, sorry - just wasn't sure!

Doctor Casino, Friday, 2 August 2013 04:32 (twelve years ago)

Allright well put me down for velvets + solo I guess

seems like that wont have as many surprises in the results (everyone will know every track in the top 20 I expect) but whatever

joe schmoladoo from 7-11 (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 2 August 2013 05:01 (twelve years ago)

tbh, I value VU tracks I like as much as Cale and Reed tracks I like. I assume Nico will be eligible as well, so I may vote for a couple of hers.

What I'm saying is that VU tracks won't dominate my own ballot, but I like knowing that I can vote for a few.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 2 August 2013 05:09 (twelve years ago)

Yes nico solo stuff is eligible as are collabs and guest spots

will be bummed/bored when sister ray comes in at no. 1 tho

joe schmoladoo from 7-11 (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 2 August 2013 05:12 (twelve years ago)

Really? I don't think that would ever come in first. I'll definitely have one each by Nico/Cale/Tucker in my Top 20, maybe one more.

clemenza, Friday, 2 August 2013 05:18 (twelve years ago)

I anticipate my ballot will be roughly half VU/half solo.

things are going to get better or worse (WilliamC), Friday, 2 August 2013 12:15 (twelve years ago)

OK, along with Stax/seandalai, who's going next?

kornrulez6969, step forward!

things are going to get better or worse (WilliamC), Friday, 2 August 2013 17:08 (twelve years ago)

read that as "Stax/Stendhal" and was like, what a weird idea for a poll.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 2 August 2013 18:07 (twelve years ago)

I'll add it as an option!

Please review your choices carefully. (seandalai), Friday, 2 August 2013 18:12 (twelve years ago)

In light of the VU +/- solo poll discussion, I want to include a best solo-Floyd sub-poll but I'm risking poll fatigue. My tentative Floyd poll breakdown is:
- Top 30 Pink Floyd songs
- Top 10 Syd Barrett solo songs)
- Top 10 Gilmour/Waters/Wright/Mason solo songs (Gilmour vs. Waters fight is always fun and I want to see if anyone else will vote for something from Mason's album of car engine noises)
- Top 5 Pink Floyd bootlegs/live shows.

The sub-polls are optional of course, but I have a feeling that a lot a folks are going to vote and I don't want it to be more of an interrogation.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 2 August 2013 23:43 (twelve years ago)

that seems like a good idea, do the solo careers as optional subpolls.

some dude, Friday, 2 August 2013 23:48 (twelve years ago)

I like that idea too

though tbh I don't really care a ton about the solo stuff, but whatever I'm down for all of it because FLOYD RULES

the pen is mightier than the penisword (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 3 August 2013 00:32 (twelve years ago)

assume THE FINAL CUT counts as solo Waters and MOMENTARY LAPSE counts as solo Gilmour yes?

resulting post (rogermexico.), Monday, 5 August 2013 00:41 (twelve years ago)

xps Gilmour's first solo record is fantastic fuiud
