...and then if you think about the stuff that Ashley Hutchings has been an integral part of you have Steeleye Span and the Albion Band, and Dave Swarbrick made a bunch of albums with Martin Carthy, and Dave Mattacks played drums on Bryter Later and a whole bunch of other stuff and ... well, it's not my poll but I reckon you might as well say fuck it and just do a UK folk rock genre poll instead.

trippin' on brostep beats (NickB), Monday, 29 July 2013 09:42 (twelve years ago)

Dave Mattacks also played with the Chills and Kajagoogoo. Who knew?

trippin' on brostep beats (NickB), Monday, 29 July 2013 09:51 (twelve years ago)

stoked for fairport poll on it's own but an electric eden type brit folk rock poll would be fantastic and also a way to bump that poll up the calendar winkwink

balls, Monday, 29 July 2013 12:56 (twelve years ago)

are you joking? i would die!

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Monday, 29 July 2013 13:13 (twelve years ago)

I think an artist poll should start. Spottie or Chap...?

things are going to get better or worse (WilliamC), Monday, 29 July 2013 13:21 (twelve years ago)

Hmm, would there be any interest in a Rush poll?

OORT (Matt #2), Monday, 29 July 2013 17:27 (twelve years ago)

YES

Fahey artist poll momentum building on the "Why Is John Fahey So Boring" thread...

Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 00:44 (twelve years ago)

Go for it! You'll have a couple of years to change your mind.

43. R. Kelly - Spottie_Ottie_Dope
44. Tom Waits - chap

With Motown done and Jay-Z results about to roll out, time to get one of these rolling, yeah?

things are going to get better or worse (WilliamC), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 01:45 (twelve years ago)

Yeah start up Tom Waits, I'm gonna wait one or two slots while Jay Z goes and such.

caek da killa (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 01:47 (twelve years ago)

Bummed about abandoned vu solo poll :(

joe schmoladoo from 7-11 (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 07:50 (twelve years ago)

DOUG MOE LOU CALE Sterling.

Mark G, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 10:11 (twelve years ago)

shakey why don't you do the vu solo poll? or maybe make it velvets + solo and just have really long ballots and a really long rollout?

balls, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 19:00 (twelve years ago)

was there one for the smiths/moz and i missed it?

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 19:30 (twelve years ago)

and marr/others, sorry

JAY-Z ILM TRACKS POLL RESULTS - WORD TO THE HYPHEN IN MY NAME

Some-D (some dude), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 19:31 (twelve years ago)

I will take the vu solo poll but it will have to wait until I'm back from hawaii (ie next week). I assume thats not a problem.

joe schmoladoo from 7-11 (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 19:32 (twelve years ago)

Nobody's gone for the Smiths LL, this is your time to shine

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 19:37 (twelve years ago)

man i hope that's VU *plus* solo careers and not just the solo careers.

Some-D (some dude), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 19:42 (twelve years ago)

I can see the merits of both, but there would probably be more voters with VU included.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 19:43 (twelve years ago)

i was just really wondering what ilm's top 20 smiths songs were and if anyone had asked
not sure i could handle a poll, but i do know the catalogue backwards and forwards for someone from the usa, still, i cannot possibly be the best candidate for this position.

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 19:45 (twelve years ago)

fwiw, the answer is "Stretch Out and Wait" and then a bunch of others in some order that doesn't matter too much.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 19:47 (twelve years ago)

Although, thinking about the image possibilities for a Smiths results rollout is quite intriguing.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 19:48 (twelve years ago)

A bunch of library/archive photos with color overlays and serif type.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 19:49 (twelve years ago)

it would be v pretty

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 19:51 (twelve years ago)

Nate Woolls signed up for the Smiths recently -- it's at #86.

I'm up for running a Rush poll, if there's suitable interest. Won't be for about 2 years anyway, which gives me time to invite a load of dorks from the Rush forum over here for a Cygnus X-1 voting block.

Addison Doug (Matt #2), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 20:15 (twelve years ago)

Velvets material would crowd out the solo stuff almost entirely I would guess. Could do two separate polls I suppose. Surprised the vu catalog hasnt been done already tbh

joe schmoladoo from 7-11 (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 20:24 (twelve years ago)

I would be much more enthusiastic about VU + solo together. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think a solo-only poll would lose some people like me who couldn't get together a list of 10 songs. (I have a number of albums, but would only list Cale/Nico/Tucker--not a big Reed fan.) VU + solo, while it would indeed be dominated by the former on a short countdown of 40 songs, would produce an interesting mix, I think, if you counted down 75 or something, and you could see where the solo stuff stands in relation to the core VU songs.

I'm biased. A countdown filled with those '80s Lou Reed albums would be much less interesting than a mixed countdown.

clemenza, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 22:04 (twelve years ago)

yeah do a top 100 and let ppl vote for 40 or 50 tracks (artist ballots are allowing 30 lately and we're talking stuff like the clash, not the deepest catalog). think including vu would greatly increase voter turnout and yeah a velvets track would almost definitely win but i don't think you'd have many ppl strictly velvets (and if they did their ballots would probably be like 10 tracks right?) and it'd be interesting to see what cale and reed solo could make the final round or whatever. plus i can think of 4 easy sidepolls: best vu album, best solo album, best live album (combined), fave member.

Ian Paice in a walk for the last category.

Uncle Cyril O'Boogie (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 00:54 (twelve years ago)

So has Tuomas checked back in at all? I guess I could send him an email to see what's up. Either we have disco running through August or we do Stax, I don't mind.

if you tolerate this, your children will be sexting (seandalai), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 08:27 (twelve years ago)

He hasn't posted in a month.

things are going to get better or worse (WilliamC), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 13:08 (twelve years ago)

He was supposedly going to be out for the first three weeks of July, and on vacation for a few weeks after that.

Not to stage a coup or anything, but I would be willing to handle the ballot tabulation for a disco poll if Tuomas doesn't return in the next couple weeks, if someone else wants to handle images.

Boven is het stil (Eric H.), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 13:09 (twelve years ago)

eh Tuomas signed up to do it, just let him have his vacation and do it when he comes back.

some dude, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 13:17 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, that's probably the best thing to do. Should I run Stax through August then?

if you tolerate this, your children will be sexting (seandalai), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 15:19 (twelve years ago)

(question not just pointed at some dude, in case that wasn't obvious)

if you tolerate this, your children will be sexting (seandalai), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 15:20 (twelve years ago)

no it's ok leave the decisions to me lol

some dude, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 15:22 (twelve years ago)

Run Stax. I was looking forward to a break in between Motown and Stax, because the Motown thing left me more fatigued than I thought it would, and disco would've cleansed the palate. In the end, Stax is different enough that it won't just seem like a continuation of the last month's worth of Motown listening. (But close.)

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 15:25 (twelve years ago)

Both Stax and disco would have a sense of continuation in my case ... I mean, had I gotten myself together and voted in Motown.

Boven is het stil (Eric H.), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 15:28 (twelve years ago)

STAX! failing disco, then I say yes to Stax

the pen is mightier than the penisword (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 1 August 2013 03:15 (twelve years ago)

(artist ballots are allowing 30 lately and we're talking stuff like the clash, not the deepest catalog)

tbf they had the equiv of nine LPs (ten if you count Spirit Of St Louis, which no-one did), a few EPs, and most of their singles (& all their b-sides) were non-album - lots more than the VU

a solitary sext (sic), Thursday, 1 August 2013 03:29 (twelve years ago)

Paging chap! Time for a Tom Waits poll!

things are going to get better or worse (WilliamC), Thursday, 1 August 2013 13:28 (twelve years ago)

btw I dislike the stretching of ballots to 30 or 40 or more; it makes voting feel a much more onerous task and I'm sure puts people off.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 1 August 2013 13:40 (twelve years ago)

^^ agree. plus i'm all for forcing the hard decisions. not being able to vote for everything is part of the fun.

resulting post (rogermexico.), Thursday, 1 August 2013 17:43 (twelve years ago)

Absolutely.
