just to be clear about that sleeve art, i only included sleeves that i was reasonably sure were the actual singles themselves, rather than comps, albums, CDs, etc.

usually i really don't go for adding art, etc but it seems really nice with this project, as most of them are harshly-lit scanned photos of old dinged up seven inches.

A little while ago, I started a thread about 'your singles box' which came to mind while watching the doc last night. Alongside the rare singles (VU, Mutantes, Monks) theres oddities like Cheech and chong, the Move's "I can hear the grass grow" funnily enough, and "Afternoon of the rhino".

I'd hate to have that selection as being truly representative of my taste, but then it wouldn't all fit into one box. Much like there being no Fall in this one.

i think a lot of the 'shite' is in there for personal reasons, not that musical taste isn't all personal reasons.

nice to see sheila in The Vaults t-shirt. (in the book it mentions that john had planned to wear one when they got to machu picchu knowing that there'd be a lot of pictures taken there, his way of getting them exposure)

first time i'd seen moving footage from the wedding as well.

oh, and the Ken Colyers Jazzmen thing would appear to be the one that isn't the Capri track, but the other one.

1) That Beatles e.p. is indeed from USSR
2) That Misunderstood single, I'm fairly certain is the one that got reissued as part of a box set, early nineties, I believe.

Yeah, but if they have gone from one collection, they go into another. So, net loss is zero.

I had v. low expectations of the documentary, but it was good.

Of course whole swathes of the music Peel liked and promoted never used the 7" format.

Was a little disappointed by the doc. I know they had a lot of 45s in his box, but the opening 20 mins was basically a White Stripes promo. Lots of unnecessary repetition too. Missed out whole swathes of the contents of the box too, eg: I'm dying to know why there are three(!!) Nilsson singles in there.

Still a v entertaining prog, but could have been much better. And good to hear Drag Racing again.

I am delighted that my band "The Negatives" single is in John's box (No 108). I accept that it is a surprise inclusion, but Detour Records (specialist mod/punk label) had previously described it as the number one UK punk record to own, which is good enough for me. Detour auctioned a vinyl 45 copy for £350 in the year 2000 and there were bids from Italy, Japan & Sweden amongst others. Detour records spent two years tracking the band down so they could re-release the songs on Bored Teenagers Volume 2 in 2000 on a compilation CD & vinyl LP. The total cost of the original recording was just £89.74 & only 1000 copies were made and sold. The punk population of Bradford bought 600 copies on the first day of release. I am aware that John Peel Played it on Radio 1 in 1979 and again in 2000 & 2004. The track was bootlegged on Bloodstains over Europe Vol 3 and a friend sold 400 casette copies to Israeli Soldiers who were heavily into Punk. All very strange!!!. The single "Love is Not Real" was a double A side with "Stakeout" on the flip side which I wrote. The single is listed at £40 in the Record Collector guide, which shows how much they know. I was lucky enough to meet John and I thanked him, not just for playing our record but for all the no hopers everywhere. I told him that I was glad we didn't sell more copies or otherwise it would never have become so collectible to such an extent that even collectors in Japan were aware of it. (I think he quite liked that). Three of the Negatives then formed the Mysterious Footsteps and we recorded tracks at Cargo Studio's in Rochdale. The engineer John Brierley played us a track he had recorded the previous day. It was only bloody "Love will Tear us a apart" by Joy Division, although I wouldn't have predicted it's legendary status from that first listen. In the pub next door to the studio was a lovely old lady who we spoke to and she was proud to tell us she was "Bill Oddies" mum. His single for John's Dandelion Label is also in the box which is a good point to stop this rambling. John told me that "Teenage Kicks" was still his number one song & that Medicine Heads "His Guiding Hand" was deeply personal to him. Only issue with the documentary was all the lovies finding comfort in picking out the singles they knew. They entirely missed the point that John would have looked through such a box to pick out the things he didn't know. God Bless Him - he was absolutely priceless and completely irreplaceable. PS I am happy that this music is alive & being shared!!!

i really like those two the negatives punk songs and the relaxing rock & roll of the nightcaps which comes after. very nice. i think i slowly get into the mood for the box. as tracer i had and still have some reservations concerning a couple of songs but overall this is excellent stuff i would never have listened to without this thread. thanks for everyone participating.

I was contacted by Chris Leeds, drummer on the Coronation St single. He confirmed that it should be credited to the I-Royals and not Izzy Royal (quoting his email):
"It turns out that it is the record I thought it was - the single was passed on to Warners after we made it, originally on the Media Marvels label -when WEA took it over they decided to change the name for some reason.

Yes, I am extremely chuffed to be in JP's personal collection - but I
wonder if he, or anyone else realises it's not a Jamaican thing - though it's listed on a few internet sales sites as that - in fact it was made in London, and mixed by Dennis Bovell's studio guy."

He thinks the label changed the name so as not to be confused with I Roy.

Does anyone know if Lee Perry "Black Belt Jones" is from that 70s Kung Fu Movie of the same name? I have it on video, but my VCR is busted, so I cannot investigate and IMDB was useless.

my vote is that the lee perry single (like a lot of his stuff from that time) was influenced by the movie
there is also loads of upsetter/perry stuff similarly inspired by spaghetti westerns…

The original 45 is quite a collector's item, as it was the first Cajun song to make the Billboard 100.

I'll second the vote for Sipho Bhengu being the hardest to find. If anyone has South African or New Zealand contacts (he was popular there, it seems), this is the time to call in a favor.

MURDERED IFP MAYOR TO BE BURIED ON SATURDAY

Durban: February 17, 2005

The IFP's KwaZulu-Natal Spokesperson, Mr Velaphi B. Ndlovu today announced that the Mayor of Imbabazane Municipality, Mr Sipho Bhengu, who was shot dead last Saturday evening, will be buried on Saturday, 19th February 2005.

The funeral will take place at his family home, KwaDlamini, in Ntabamhlophe and will begin at 10h00. (Ntabamhlophe is approximately 20 km's outside Giants Castle in KwaZulu-Natal.)

A high ranking delegation of IFP leaders will be present at the funeral to pay their last respects to Sipho Bhengu who has always been a shining example of what true service to the community really means.

The delegation will include the IFP's National Chairperson Dr Ziba Jiyane, the Secretary-General Rev. Musa Zondi, the Deputy Secretary-General Prof. Themba Msimang, the IFP Women's Brigade National Secretary Ms. Zanele Magwaza and KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Spokesperson Mr Velaphi Ndlovu, among others.
