This song is very girly Taylor, it’s very young Taylor, it’s a little petty a little flip, all shades of Taylor we’ve seen before, but this time packaged more Katy than Shania. What makes it work, for me, is that the quality of immaturity, for lack of a better word, that this song possesses, feels like a purposeful choice, not an accident of personal emotional weakness. I think it’s important to remember that Stage Taylor/Record Taylor is allowed to be malleable, allowed to be dreamed up and twisted around, important to remember this young woman does not owe you or me or anyone an Authentic Self that can be easily pinned down and exposed. I swear, it’s not that I want to say it again, but there are layers. “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" can be read as Taylor speaking a truth through a put-on voice. “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" doesn’t have to be silly just because it sounds like it.

I can't quibble with how much people invest in/project on this person, but I do find it an intriguing mix of adorable and perplexing. Even so, that's a pretty good defense of any pop star and their attendant career machinations, I think.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 12:12 (twelve years ago)

no taylor swift thread bump is complete without a patronising josh in chicago post

i don't even know who you get enthusiastic about, but i'm sure it's just as worthy of a pat on the head

lex pretend, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 12:16 (twelve years ago)

Ha, I'm not even sure what I like is worthy of a pat on the head!

I was talking about the piece linked, by the way. In this (rare) instance I was not making fun of the enthusiasm of the thread participants.

In all honesty, I'd love to hear the making of a song like "We Are Never ...." from its demo form to fruition, because Swift, no matter how I or you or anyone feels, is no puppet, but Max Martin is a sort of drag and drop hit maker, and I'm really curious what she added to his insta-hit, because she's smart/talented enough to make his stuff better/more personal. Like, I'm not sure what Bon Jovi brought to "It's My Life," but "We Are Never..." seems particularly, well, tailor made for Taylor at this point in her career, which I do think totally validates her instincts. Again, no matter how I ultimately feel about the product.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 12:25 (twelve years ago)

It's not at all hard to hear the specific Max Martin elements in any of the songs they did. The songs sound like 90 percent Taylor goosed up with 10 percent Max.

I finally got sold on "22" today. A friend of mine had a birthday party at the lake and picked me up on the way. He and his girlfriend were in the front seats, so I was in back with his kids. In response to their grumbling at having to share the back seat with me, my friend said, "But he has a lot of songs on his phone that you like." So his kids, who are about 7 and 10, grabbed my phone and started looking through it and picking songs to play. They eventually dug out the Taylor Swift, and when "22" came on, my friend said, "Hey, I"m 44 today -- that's twice as good as 22!" And so all of us went down the highway with the windows down singing, "I'm feeling 44!"

"breakfast at midnight" reminds me of BAD II the Globe: "get up and clean your teeth and have a shave/It's one a.m. let's go out to a rave." Anyone think that Swifty is waking up with something a little less innocuous than a Lumberjack Slam at Dennys?

I love that she can just throw away a song like this. Feels like it was written in about two hours, but it's still so carefully done. The modulation from the verse to chorus is a nice trick.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 01:36 (twelve years ago)

I don't think it modulates so much as it just jumps to a different key, but it works.

Driver 8, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 21:28 (twelve years ago)

Like the song, and love her, of course, but it showcases one of her annoying quirks, i.e., using nonsense syllables to fill out the melody when she can't make the lyrics scan right: "Hit the ground / Hit the ground oh oh" and "And now you've come undone and I-I-I-I-I" and "And now you're onto something I-I-I-I-I say," etc. It's not like she's alone in doing this as a songwriter, but it bugs me in this song for some reason.

Driver 8, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 21:33 (twelve years ago)

know what you're saying but for someone with the dn "Driver 8"...

Nice Jody Rosen profile:

http://www.vulture.com/2013/11/taylor-swift-reigning-queen-of-pop.html

These numbers are especially improbable when you consider the music, and the musician, behind them. Swift is an oddball. There is no real historical precedent for her. Her path to stardom has defied the established patterns; she falls between genres, eras, demographics, paradigms, trends. She is a Pennsylvania Yankee turned teen-pop country singer, a Nashville star who crossed over to Top 40, a confessional singer-songwriter who masquerades as a global pop diva. Her music mashes up the quirkily homespun and the gleaming pop-industrial, Etsy and Amazon, in a way we’ve never quite heard before.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZD7PvtbkH0I (Hungry4Ass), Tuesday, 19 November 2013 17:53 (twelve years ago)

feel like the piece is decently-written but a redux of everything that's been written which i guess is what it's meant to be. worth it for t-swift coining "the pageantry of trying to seem like nothing affects you" (telling she gets the best line!)
