A buddy and I were predicting how we think Jay-Z will eventually die. And we came to the conclusion that he'll go in a way associated with European royalty: he was skiing in Switzerland, went too close to the traffic while riding his bicycle in France, or dies while in Germany.

Kanye, though, will perish by touching the Ark of the Covenant, the discovery of which he'll personally finance and heavily publicize in 2020+

We agreed that Kanye will probably die from one of the many kinds of vaguely sci-fi-ish deaths people thought would do-in Michael Jackson from the mid-80s onwards.

Too bad Johnny Cash didn't live long enough to cover "New Slaves."

Kanye called me. I’d just finished working at the studio for about two months on another album, and I was getting ready to go away on vacation for a couple weeks. Then he called up and said, “Can I just come play my album?” And I said, “Sure.” I always like to hear what he’s working on. So he came over to my house in Malibu. We listened. I thought I was going to hear a finished album, but actually we listened to probably three and a half hours of works in progress. Kind of meandering, unfocused, usually without his vocals. I assumed that the album was scheduled to come out next year. So I said, “When are you thinking of finishing up?” And he said, “It’s coming out in five weeks.”

I said, “I have a record coming out in November that’s a lot further along than this.” He said, “Really? What are you doing for the next five days?” I said I was going to go away. Then he said, “Please help me. Would you be open to fixing it and shaping it and finishing it off?”

I remember I wasn’t feeling that well that day, and I was thinking, Is the music making me sick? I don’t feel good about this. We ended up working probably 15 days, 16 days, long hours, no days off, 15 hours a day. I was panicked the whole time.

The idea of making it edgy and minimal and hard was Kanye’s. I’d say, “This song is not so good. Should I start messing with it? Can I make it better?” And he’d say, “Yes, but instead of adding stuff, try taking stuff away.” We talked a lot about minimalism. My house is basically an empty white box. When he walked in, he was like, “My house is an empty white box, too!”

Three days before Kanye had to turn the record in he tells us, “I’m going to Milan tonight.” There are probably five songs that still need vocals at this point. Two still need words! So he says, “I have to go to this baby shower before I go to Milan. I’ll be back at 4 p.m., and from 4 to 6 I’ll do the vocals. Then I have to go.” He didn’t come back until after 4, and we probably didn’t start until after 5. He said, “I have an hour and 10 minutes. Let’s go.” It probably ended up taking two hours. Five vocals. He wrote two lyrics on the spot.

i somehow had this lined up with Bish Bosch on Spotify and for the first scott walker song i was distracted so when Bound 2 segued into See you Don't Bump His Head I thought maybe I had broken through to what Kanye was trying to say, but no. Exciting realization that Ye wants to be Scott Walker though!

Or he says "I'd rather be a dick than a swallower" — but then he does a whole chorus with Frank Ocean. What he says and what he does are often two different things.

the entire "hold my liquor" -> "guilt trip" section is the pits

yeah the more i listen to the album, the more tracks 5-8 feel like a big long ditch

But 1-4 feel more like the aggro crag, and I've been wanting a piece of the rock daily

I like "Guilt Trip!" 5-7 is my lull.

"Guilt Trip" has the cool synth that sounds like the intro of "Fly Like an Eagle."

And I usually play "I'm In It" all the way through.

"Blood on the Leaves" is the major buzzkill IMO. I'm confused about the reviews that called this one a standout, and even more perplexed that it actually ended up charting.

Would sound great if I didn't understand English.

pretty sure the madonna, jay and gaga albums all had extraneous circumstances, right? Madonna and Jay had some major promotion and gaga had an amazon superlow first week price. So ye and mac miller i guess.

Yup. I've had this playing in the car a ton.

haven't really listened much after the first few plays. there have been so many great hiphop mixtapes released this year that I prefer to listen to.
