seems like Q leaving 1xtra hasn't been such a bad thing after all. Love these hour long mixes.

Benny B, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 21:18 (twelve years ago)

Xxpost agreed, I've just been listening to the may one more in the past few weeks for obvious reasons.

And benny, I agree - the perfect length and much more accessible. Though maybe a step down for people who were getting a weekly fix before.

Tim F, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 21:29 (twelve years ago)

I only started to listen to the 1xtra show about a year before it ended (not every week i admit). Obviously it was a peerless show but I like the concentrated 1 hour hit and it means i'm replaying and getting more out of them. This no-chat format also really highlights his mixing skills more and puts him centre-stage. Plus the guy's workrate outside of radio is so fierce, can't say I've felt a lack of Q in my life since the MOS show started so i'm happy.

Benny B, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 22:17 (twelve years ago)

i'd imagined losing the weekly fix would be a terrible loss but actually it's been really rewarding spending a bit longer marinating on each mix and getting into some close reading. (ok i probably wouldnt say no to fortnightly...)

i guess in retrospect q's 1xtra departure could be seen to be serendipitous as from then on garage has diffused out into ubiquity whilst simultaneously losing its core heartland to some extent - everywhere but nowhere. "essential garage" becomes aptly named under q's direction - not simply an exercise in (superbly) mixing together whatever's around at the moment but an ideological treatise on garageness itself, and rather than retreat back to basics to make the point like everyone else he instead approaches it by taking in even more of the surrounding ecology as possible and intuitively teases out the bubbling thread running through

r|t|c, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 22:36 (twelve years ago)

which is why i particularly ride for the march set cos i think he said more with what at the time seemed apparently "less" if you catch my drift

r|t|c, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 22:38 (twelve years ago)

fyi i'd have said the 1xtra shows (admittedly on a weekly basis) had the same half hour to an hour span where he'd lock in and start to... emulsify what was at hand. the rest was maybe more casually mixing new tracks in a radio presentation style, and then an hour's interview and set from a guest

When you put it like that, if Q ever does a MOS mix cd (now there's a thought) they should totally commission you to write the liner notes.

Benny B, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 22:46 (twelve years ago)

posts written while watching the rock, vol 1

do mos comps even have liner notes these days

r|t|c, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 23:05 (twelve years ago)

This mix he did for us grows on me with repeated plays.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 10 July 2013 03:48 (twelve years ago)

We get the crowd hype
Put scones on the mic. . .

Pretty sure that's not what I'm really hearing.

if anyone would like to return the sample spotting favour, what is the guitar lick here from (not the proper og og just the famous thing), it is driving me crackers

ok wait i somehow recalled this but surely q ain't also knowing 1995 deep cuts from og j-lo's, what am i missing

Biggie Smalls - Machine Gun Funk (og is something by parliament i think)

Benny B, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 01:26 (twelve years ago)

duhhhhhhhhh kill me

r|t|c, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 01:55 (twelve years ago)

that is epic

r|t|c, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 01:55 (twelve years ago)

heh, thats my fave biggie tune actually!

This new DJ Q Birthday bash mix!
https://soundcloud.com/djqmusic/dj-q-birthday-bash-17th-august

Super high energy set this, Gorgon City 'Real' and Katy B revved up to the absolute max.

Also, is it too early to get excited about the Q album yet? (drops in September right?)

Benny B, Thursday, 18 July 2013 10:18 (twelve years ago)

heh this mix feels like a congenial hits parade breeze compared to monday's ruff tuff essential garage set 4 the headz

in this (relatively) looser and more free-wheeling style it's good to hear some defected style bits like the mk mix of katy b or no artificial colours - a dialogue still only intermittently suggested in the 'proper' sets i think

disclosure 'voices' and drums of death 'true' sound at least twice the tunes they do here than on their own or elsewhere

r|t|c, Thursday, 18 July 2013 21:44 (twelve years ago)

also that blend of pete graham / lorenzo 'who dat' with amber jolene 'back in the day' accapella at 38 mins is >>>>>>>>>>

r|t|c, Thursday, 18 July 2013 21:45 (twelve years ago)

like that's in a nutshell exactly the salted caramel steez that defines what we're here for

r|t|c, Thursday, 18 July 2013 21:50 (twelve years ago)

yes he is kinda kinda breezing through the hits (expertly so, natch), I guess its meant to be a typical set he would do live - btw anyone here actually seen DJ Q out in the real world?

(love the DJ Q WILL JACK YOUR BOX! tag)

Hadn't realised the new mos mix was already out, gonna check that now.

Benny B, Thursday, 18 July 2013 22:47 (twelve years ago)

the salted caramel steez that defines what we're here for

haven't even heard this yet but instinctively feel this description is correct.

xp i get the feeling it's another mysterious promo mash-up like the redlight/'dub be good to me' last year

listening to them on their own there outside of le zone the q bass trax seem a pretty interesting take actually; like retrospective audio hypotheses on how bassline mutated into jackin

Birthday Bash mix is the shit.

Is there a vibier sound to drop into the mix in 2013 than the glassy organ intro of MK's remix of "What Love Is Made Of"? I suspect not.

Tim F, Monday, 29 July 2013 22:18 (twelve years ago)

On this (old? how old is this?) "Classified" DJ Mag mix, this part with "say you're not gonna let me go" and all the jazzy guitar is just amazing. I realize how unreasonable the idea is, but I'd love to hear a whole mix with wall to wall jazz guitar (something I mostly don't like in its pure form).

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 03:53 (twelve years ago)

That reminds me I need to get around to checking out the Swindle album

we run zings, zings don't run we (The Reverend), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 04:57 (twelve years ago)

i heard it the once and thought it fairly tedious and overindulgent. bump if u end up feeling otherwise though

r|t|c, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 11:23 (twelve years ago)

Does anyone know if (ILX's) DJP has checked out DJ Q? It seems like it would be DJPbait, but maybe I don't get his taste (especially in dance music?).

omg what a great name

r|t|c, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 09:56 (twelve years ago)

i'm all about this release and what it's bringing to the table but twatty limited vinyl only just totally undercuts the fun point of it

ha this rules

similarly, based on track titles alone this is promising

lex pretend, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 10:12 (twelve years ago)

anyone checked out that Thug Houz vol 1 thing yet? Is it like a proper album or a dj mix?

Benny B, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 10:15 (twelve years ago)

It's up on Spotify.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 12:51 (twelve years ago)

Seems like an album more than a dj mix. (I have no idea if this is mostly new material or not, since I don't know this stuff.)

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 12:53 (twelve years ago)

Can't hide my disappointment about Trumpet & Badman turning out to be a track title rather than a duo name.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 12:55 (twelve years ago)

"Feel It" sounds familiar. This is one oneofthose DJ Q mixes.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 12:58 (twelve years ago)

on one

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 12:58 (twelve years ago)

This one gets me boppin'.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 12:59 (twelve years ago)

turn that frown upside down matt, you've misread

r|t|c, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 13:01 (twelve years ago)

trumpet & badman appears to be a dj haus track that he and dj q then used as a duo name

lex pretend, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 13:02 (twelve years ago)

:)

Matt DC, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 13:09 (twelve years ago)
