New from the DFA...

You can hear it at the very end of the Aug 8th episode of beats in space. it sounded kind of so-so to me as far as DFA mixes go, but i'm looking forward to hearing the whole thing.

Yes. Oh, yes indeed. This is where I get all fanboyish and start dribbling and yelling DUDE BUY IT at my screen.

It took me SO long to learn to like this, but now I think it's one of the absolute most exemplary tracks they've ever come up with. I mean I don't have it on endless repeat or anything (that would still be the "Colours" remix), but it might be the best example of the DFA "hey, let's not do anything particularly CRAY-ZEE, and let's spend like twelve minutes not doing it" steez. And good lord is that ever a quality steez. I'm hoping my reaction to the Arthur Russell mix comes around in similar fashion.

ps: so glad the UNKLE mix has been rediscovered a bit, always wished people heard that for the great mix it is (and about 95% original music), it was a bit strange to spin out so it got buried when released. that box set is hilarious. they have like 65 remixes on there, no joke, and they EDITED ours?

Probably his slightly harder stuff like "Jimis (2006 Edit)" or the second half of his remix of Tosca's "Superrob".

surely that makes the pain easier to accept.

and yes - the full version (on the previously available cd single .. and the extra disc on the Never Never Land reissue 2cd set - ahem) is total quality

s'been a bit quiet in DFA land of late, i assume because LCD are touring. wonder when all this new stuff like 'still going theme' (!!!!!!), 'hold on' by holy ghost and that hercules & love affair track is coming out.

also: they're reissuing the first pylon record.

Yeah, and when's the Mock & Toof coming out?

Shocking Pinks 12" was released today with a Glimmers mix on the b-side.

are mock and toof on DFA? well i never.

At least, there's an ad in this week's NME advertising the Shocking Pinks single being released today. I can't find any mention of it on any online store, so who knows.

I'm sure something like it has been done before, and I'm totally corning myself out here, but it's one of those things and hear and, y'know, SEE THE POSSIBILITIES. Filter country as hip style of 2008, etc.

its a new sub-label signing European acts, if i'm correct. Three 12"s to be released in the next month or two.

I really like the other side of that Altz release, "Max Motion." Been wondering where to find it since hearing it on the Optimo Essentials mix from last year.

i started listening to the new Prinzhorn Dance School. only on like song 3. it's kinda weird. not what i'd expect from DFA. really minimal. lead by bass with drum accents (no real drum beats yet). maybe a bit Fall-ish? i'll listen to the whole thing before i make a full judgment.

That band made more sense to me when someone pointed out that they're named after Hans Prinzhorn, a German psychiatrist whose life's work was collecting and studying artwork made by the mentally ill.
Anyway, yeah, ultra-minimal Fall is definitely the reference point, it would seem.

I finally did get that Shocking Pinks 12" - it's pretty nice.

i like the glimmers remix.

the use of Prinzhorn in that same Optimo mix is pretty great, too.

Prinzhorn = very Fall, very good bet for America's many fans of getting yelled at by British people

I really like the Shocking Pinks new single too - it's got more than a hint of New Order but if all the lyrics were indecipherable and a little pouting indie.

The Arkityp remix is pretty great too.
