Why is The Radio Dept. being, like, so ignored by Indiedom?

"it does exist, it was just released on XL. the newer ep is coming out on labrador."

okay, but that's a british/american release then. I live in sweden so we wont be getting that(or will we?). two of the songs are old and the third is not something I recognize..

Crapstone (Crapstone), Sunday, 26 December 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I allowed to vote for the Radio Dept in my end of year list or is it too 2003, do you think?. 'Strange Things Will Happen' is pushing to be my favourite song of the year.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 30 December 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

strange things will happen is their best tune, too bad it's the only track where that girl sings. if she were the voice of the band, i would actually like them.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 30 December 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Seems apropos that "Lesser Things" made Broken Social Scene's top 10 records of 2004.

NEW POINTS NEW LINES

I love the new EP a lot. 'Deliverence' is just great.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 13 February 2005 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. Yes. Yes. The ep is the best thing they've done. The first three tracks are simply amazing. A bit lighter than before, more Pet Shop Boys-ish.

okay for all the fun I made of their name up above, Lesser Matters is really good, much better than the Postal Service for this sort of thing.

Lesser Matters is such an excellent album.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 27 August 2005 04:30 (twenty years ago)

(cont). Does anyone know what they're up to now? A new album in the pipes perhaps?

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 27 August 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

they put out those two EPs in Sweden, and i gather they've finished/are nearly finished the followup..

jimmy glass (electricsound), Saturday, 27 August 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

the new album is out in september according to this website but they might be on crack. Suburban Kids with Biblical Names debut is out in October.

Pet Grief out on April 12th and I'm already digging the single "The Worse Taste In Music". I got into the EPs first and then Lesser Matters and I wasn't as crazy about it as I thought I'd be, probably because their music works to create some sort of catatonic mood in small doses. Still, I'm highly anticipating the new one.

Anyone heard it yet?

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Friday, 24 March 2006 14:59 (twenty years ago)

From labrador.se:

http://www.labrador.se/cover/lab095.jpg

release date: April 12

1. it's personal
2. pet grief
3. a window
4. i wanted you to feel the same
5. south side
6. the worst taste in music
7 every time
8. what will give?
9. gibraltar
10. sleeping in
11. tell
12. always a relief

Hopefully XL Records will distribute it in North America like they did for Lesser Matters.

The single: The Worse Taste In Music

good.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 25 March 2006 15:14 (twenty years ago)

you should apologize, moran.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 25 March 2006 15:14 (twenty years ago)

probably because their music works to create some sort of catatonic mood in small doses.

I sort of feel the opposite. I like listening to their songs, but Lesser Matters isn't very exciting when taken in a large dose.

This new single is not quite as immediate as "Where Damage...", but it has some shimmery goodness.

So this is right up my alley, but I've never heard of them until the 'Marie Antoinette' soundtrack.

I.M. From Hollywood (i_m_from_hollywood), Monday, 23 October 2006 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

Same here! (Though I did double-check this thread to see if I'd posted on it before.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 23 October 2006 17:41 (nineteen years ago)

Welcome aboard, guys.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 23 October 2006 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

Yep. Excellent band, glad they're finally getting some love.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 23 October 2006 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

the 12-22-04 Nabisco comments are directly on target, though I think the Toulouse album that fits better is The Way The City Stretches especially "Know Better"

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Monday, 23 October 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

Fetchboy (Felcher), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 01:36 (nineteen years ago)

The stuff on their website is rather unremarkable.

Bee OK, Sunday, 21 February 2010 03:38 (sixteen years ago)

Track listing

1. Domestic Scene
2. Heaven's on Fire
3. This Time Around
4. Never Follow Suit
5. A Token of Gratitude
6. The Video Dept.
7. Memory Loss
8. David
9. Four Months in the Shade
10. You Stopped Making Sense

this has leaked

Bee OK, Sunday, 21 February 2010 03:44 (sixteen years ago)

Is it legit? I know there's some question about the leak a few days ago (maybe this one's different?)

"Heaven's on Fire" is awesome, but sadly not a KISS cover.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 21 February 2010 03:46 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, mine is good and i'm liking it so far.

Bee OK, Sunday, 21 February 2010 03:51 (sixteen years ago)

The only problem with this band is the vocals. Who decided the guy could sing? ...he's terrible! They would be like a million times better with a good singer.

Just got a hot review on p4k. Kinda jj'ish? (Or is that vice-versa?) Anyway, I'm taking the cover as a recommendation and I plan to listen to the album in preferred state this week.

Mordy, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 03:51 (sixteen years ago)

this is a great record. one of my most played for 2010. it is perfect for night listening. might be their best album yet.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 05:35 (sixteen years ago)

will have to go read the review, thank for pointing it out.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 05:35 (sixteen years ago)

It is a great album though it's not a huge growth. I like it much more than Pet Grief, but not as much as Lesser Matters, which I don't think they'll ever top.

scott pgwp (pgwp), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 07:56 (sixteen years ago)

Picked this up last week myself and it's excellent... possibly their best work.

Agreed that "Heaven's on Fire" is stunning.

The highs are extremely high and the lows have improved (for me) over time. Kind of wish it were longer but it's better to be short and perfect than long and patchy.

skip, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 14:13 (sixteen years ago)

it's better to be short and perfect than long and patchy.

This applies nicely to the jj album, too. I don't see the comparison except for a couple tracks, but both albums are short and sweet, and among my most played of the last few weeks.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 14:30 (sixteen years ago)

i read these guys set out to sound nothing like jj or balearic. don't think they do either tbh.

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 14:35 (sixteen years ago)

is that dude taking a hit out of a shotgun?

dazzle shjips (Future_Perfect), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 14:41 (sixteen years ago)

Don't think this band has been much good since half the band left sometime after the 1st album. This new one is better than Pet Grief though, but I didn't like that one at all.

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 14:48 (sixteen years ago)

PEOPLE SEE ROCK AND ROLL AS-- AS YOUTH CULTURE

AND WHEN YOUTH CULTURE BECOMES MONOPOLIZED BY BIG BUSINESS... WHAT ARE THE YOUTH TO DO

DO YOU-- DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA

I THINK WE SHOULD DESTROY THE BOGUS CAPITALIST PROCESS THAT IS DESTROYING YOUTH CULTURE

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 20:23 (sixteen years ago)

This is really good, the whole album has this upbeat-yet-melancholy sense around it, which is really charming.

boxedjoy, Thursday, 29 April 2010 11:31 (sixteen years ago)

these guys suck. subpar indie papp. plugging your guitar in direct doesn't make you shoegaze, it just makes the guitar sound like it's plugged in direct.

this is lo-fi bedroom generic indie straight from 1992. send it back.

Yes. Because they suck, basically.

AlexPh, Thursday, 29 April 2010 15:01 (sixteen years ago)

i like this album a lot more than pet grief, but still not quite up to the debut. they really really need to drop whatever fx they use on the voice. it won't kill them, sambassadeur survived and came out sounding a lot better for it.

ways t'burg (electricsound), Sunday, 2 May 2010 09:37 (sixteen years ago)

I've been listing to the last two albums a lot lately while I've been working from home, amazing how this music feels so comforting and familiar, yet so strikingly good

boxedjoy, Saturday, 1 March 2025 23:27 (one year ago)

So many good uncompiled singles too

I am using your worlds, Sunday, 2 March 2025 07:46 (one year ago)

what ended up happening to that idea of a new album 5 years ago i wonder, the pandemic probably got in the road i guess

but where have they been?

My wife and I were just listening to Lesser Matters the other day and lamenting that they’d seemed to have disappeared. Glad to see them out and hope something new will come
