Discovery has sold 792,000 copies to date but I don't know about first week or month or year sales.

Difference being that those kinds of numbers were nowhere near what it took to debut you at number 1 back then.

i don't even have an internet (Hurting 2), Friday, 14 June 2013 21:51 (thirteen years ago)

guys, this album will surpass cumulative sales of Daft Punk's previous albums in the U.S.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 14 June 2013 21:52 (thirteen years ago)

that's not looking likely

i don't even have an internet (Hurting 2), Friday, 14 June 2013 21:55 (thirteen years ago)

yeah IN THE US kinda key to what I was saying there Hurting. I don't care about Europe and teh Britishes (sorry chaps! good show wot wot) these guys were basically nobody in the US prior to the pyramid tour and then this album. the only people I know who were into them circa Discovery and Homework were dance music partisans and tech nerds (of which there are many in my locale but still)

Bathory Tub Blues (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 14 June 2013 21:56 (thirteen years ago)

It's shifted 494,000 in three weeks -- it sure will.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 14 June 2013 21:57 (thirteen years ago)

Bathory Tub Blues (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 14 June 2013 21:57 (thirteen years ago)

They put up posters for this one so that kinda makes sense it'll sell more.

everything, Friday, 14 June 2013 21:58 (thirteen years ago)

i hear they'll sell one copy for every 5 posters they put up

right, that's more than 160,000 copies a week. They're on pace to sell 8,320,000 records this year!

i don't even have an internet (Hurting 2), Friday, 14 June 2013 22:03 (thirteen years ago)

lose yourself to chance!

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 14 June 2013 22:04 (thirteen years ago)

posters, billboards, TV ads - this was an old-school promo campaign, they've been pretty up-front about it. and it worked! It got a bunch of people to buy the album when it came out. I don't see what's contentious about this exactly.

Bathory Tub Blues (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 14 June 2013 22:05 (thirteen years ago)

daft punk: are they popular?

http://threeframes.net (gr8080), Friday, 14 June 2013 22:50 (thirteen years ago)

Shall we anticipate the FOURTH ALBUM by the EDM act "Daft Punk"? I think I may.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Friday, 14 June 2013 22:54 (thirteen years ago)

Such a bold question to ask someone in the 21st century

Sufjan Grafton, Saturday, 15 June 2013 05:22 (thirteen years ago)

Equivalent to asking "are you a time traveler?"

Sufjan Grafton, Saturday, 15 June 2013 05:22 (thirteen years ago)

I wonder if anyone on this thread actually bought the album

Zelda Zonk, Saturday, 15 June 2013 05:42 (thirteen years ago)

I bought the album my hyrulian friend

Sufjan Grafton, Saturday, 15 June 2013 05:44 (thirteen years ago)

Love the progginess and easy listening nods and the winks at acid jazz. Panda bear one is after a few listens maybe the weakest but maybe I'll come around. Perfect album for driving the freeway at midnight en route to the airport to pick your lady up from a transcontinental flight.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Saturday, 15 June 2013 23:14 (thirteen years ago)

I bought the album, I wanted to be a part of it all.

eris bueller (lukas), Saturday, 15 June 2013 23:33 (thirteen years ago)

God I really fuckin hate this album now...can't believe I was duped by all the hype and a multi million dollar marketing campaign...what was I thinking?!!

...all I know is that 'Giorgio By Moroder' is one of my favourite tracks released so far this year.

mm yeah I'll have to try it

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 16 June 2013 00:55 (thirteen years ago)

Bought it, but wishing I'd bought the Japanese version just because "Horizon" is a really great coda--should've at least been on the standard vinyl release, where surely there was room across two LPs.

Only within the last week or two have I finally heard "Get Lucky" on the radio.

Murder in the Rue McClanahan (jaymc), Monday, 17 June 2013 13:23 (thirteen years ago)

Really? Wow.

they all are afflicted with a sickness of existence (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 17 June 2013 13:33 (thirteen years ago)

It was all over Italian radio when we were in Sardinia at the end of May, and feels like it's been on UK radio all the time.

they all are afflicted with a sickness of existence (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 17 June 2013 13:34 (thirteen years ago)

jaymc did you hear it on B96? I heard it on there twice this weekend.

http://threeframes.net (gr8080), Monday, 17 June 2013 14:24 (thirteen years ago)

one time it was followed by "blurred lines" heh

http://threeframes.net (gr8080), Monday, 17 June 2013 14:25 (thirteen years ago)

Sonically "Get Lucky" doesn't fit into US Top 40 radio playlists as well as UK/Euro radio.

ttyih boi (crüt), Monday, 17 June 2013 14:25 (thirteen years ago)

As someone with no experience of US playlists, why is this?

they all are afflicted with a sickness of existence (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 17 June 2013 14:32 (thirteen years ago)

a particular kind of EDM rules.

I heard "Blurred Lines" on top 40 radio yesterday for the first time.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 17 June 2013 14:33 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah the closest company it currently has is Bruno Mars' Treasure and Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines.

MarkoP, Monday, 17 June 2013 14:35 (thirteen years ago)

and maybe Suit and Tie.

MarkoP, Monday, 17 June 2013 14:36 (thirteen years ago)

"Why would anyone get lucky if they stayed up all night?" asked my daughter. "They should be singing 'we're up all night to get grouchy.'"

Yeah, I've now heard it on B96, KISS 103.5, and (lol) the Mix.

Murder in the Rue McClanahan (jaymc), Monday, 17 June 2013 21:04 (thirteen years ago)

a particular kind of EDM rules.

Some of it probably also has to do with the fact that Daft Punk had no previous footprint on Top 40 radio in the U.S.? I mean, Rihanna and Adele and Bruno Mars can get plenty of airplay with slow piano ballads, so it's not like it's thumping club beats all the time.

Murder in the Rue McClanahan (jaymc), Monday, 17 June 2013 21:07 (thirteen years ago)

a particular kind of EDM rules.

This isn't really that true anymore! I've been listening to commercial radio the past couple weeks for the first time in months and I've been surprised how little EDM-pop I hear and most of what I do is old. The only song in the current top 20 that even kind of qualifies is "I Love It".

That said, I've been hearing "Blurred Lines" on the radio way more than "Get Lucky".

The Reverend, Monday, 17 June 2013 21:29 (thirteen years ago)

Get Lucky is not gonna be the runaway hit of the summer guys.

i don't even have an internet (Hurting 2), Monday, 17 June 2013 21:29 (thirteen years ago)

More like Get REAL

i don't even have an internet (Hurting 2), Monday, 17 June 2013 21:30 (thirteen years ago)

"Get Lucky" and "Blurred Lines" are #6 and #8 respectively on the most recent radio songs chart, I expect the latter will shoot way up in this week's. "Treasure" is #11.

ttyih boi (crüt), Monday, 17 June 2013 21:35 (thirteen years ago)

I dunno, it feels really ersatz to me in a way "Get Lucky" should but doesn't. That's kind of a problem Bruno Mars always has and always will have.
