what's so baffling about people loving something that sounds like arthur russell, disco, and house with pop vocals. plus DFA seal of approval. seems tailor made for ILM.

(p.s. not being cynical here, it's a great record! probably the best thing I've heard so far this year)

the thing abt Nu Amerykah is that it's so forlorn and so fucked up/confused and experimental, and yet it's a protest record, and Badu is making a stand...she's having a hard time figuring out what that stand is, wading through the suffering of millions to find out what's going on...just like the rest of us, she's fucked sideways in confusion, but she knows what's right is right, and she's willing to stand up and fight for it...carving knife in hand, she will leave no cranny and nook unexplored until she finds the devil & cuts its tail off...

awesome take on it...

so glad H&LA didn't win - don't have much against them but winning both polls would've been unseemly.

Holy fuck.

I'm trying to think of a "love at first listen" record in recent memory that ALSO signaled such depth/repeated-listening rewards. Most of the records I swoon over on day one ultimately tank due to one-dimensionality or excessive novelty or whatever. This is a grower AND a shower.

― Hadrian VIII

Fucking awesome, awesome, awesome. Blows their 90s stuff out of the water, and their 90s stuff was real good. I love how free they feel to take the songs in any direction at any time--they treat changing the arrangement or the specific sound of a part the way most bands treat changing chords or going to a bridge or new section. The whole thing is so structurally fucked but not a way that seems random or annoying. Basically it's one of the most liberated albums I've ever heard; like they have no idea that it's going to be heard by anybody other than them.

― call all destroyer

Album of the decade.

― van smack

Even the first time I listened to Third, I got the same kind of whole-body chill I got the first time I listened to The Avalanches' Since I Left You and Life Without Buildings' Any Other City...and those remain #1 and #2 on my albums-of-the-decade mental list. I don't think including it in any kind of decade-centric ranking is a stretch at all.

― Johnny Fever

So... I just bought this and am about to listen to it. The only thing I've heard to date is "Machine Gun", which I thought was unreal awesomeness.

― HI DERE

42 seconds into "Silence"

holy shit

― HI DERE

30 seconds into "Hunter"

holy shit, you guys, this is fucking unreal

oh shit, the guitars, holy shit

― HI DERE

omg "Plastic" and that off-meter knocking sound running behind the verse, plus the distorted-synth chorus...

― HI DERE

I'm surprised at how clean Beth's vocals are up to this point!

― HI DERE

God, most of this feels like Portishead reinventing early-90s Warp Records and it's awesome.

― HI DERE

oh shit, "We Carry On"

I was going to complain about the drums not being heavy enough but that would have missed the point of the song, wouldn't it?

― HI DERE

It's like, the guitar kicks in and I went "OH! That's why the drums aren't heavier!"

These guys arrange the shit out of everything they touch. Impeccable.

― HI DERE

Okay "Deep Water" into "Machine Gun" is just fucking awesome.

― HI DERE

"Let's take the most organic, analog-heavy, tender, traditional song we've recorded and segue it into a brutal mechanical grinder."

Fandango not to get all ad hominem but do you even like any music on the basis of it offering a real (or close to that) e rush? I've never pegged you that way.

I... think so? I don't know, I'd say automatically and unequivocally YES to this just on the principle.

But seriously all of the stuff I was virulenty slagging upthread (and over-inclusively no dobut I'll be proved wrong to myself as soon as next week) just feels so, for want of a better word, impure. So horribly over-referential and culturally filtered, second hand, second rate, and I just can't really get directly or indirectly to that particular feeling with this music.

I don't know if this helps but someone compared that Air France track to the old Chemical Brothers track "Star guitar" but saying 'it's a much better song'... I was thinking?? the reverse x10000!! and it made me want to go all "so RONG" but instead I shrugged.

fwiw, I heard them quite a while before they got discussed on ILM and felt the same then, kinda pleasant, but somewhat false/forced sounding and yes, pretty (but inconsequential). Reading the strength of some peoples reactions, I don't get it. I'm not saying they aren't true for them, but if/when I do crave that kind of thing from music, it might be (actually helps more often) from dated music, but never ever from what to me just sounds like yet more refried updated nostalgia.
