It's hard to believe that 22 years has gone by so quick, U2 The Joshua Tree had a unique double page advert in Sounds magazine and Annie Nightingale got ever so excited about the album on Radio 1. Meanwhile are Louis was a just a new born.

djmartian, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 00:27 (seventeen years ago)

Michael Jordan is the big one obvs

If you're gonna hear the Lindstrøm album, you kind of have to listen to the whole thing. It works like a movie.

musically is working! cut her some slack!

Gukbe, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 00:31 (seventeen years ago)

I missed the Erykah Badu debate, but can I chime that, amazing new developments since the recording of the album aside (for which I have Young Jeezy to hold me down), New Amerykah perfectly captures what it feels like to be black in America in 2008? When I listen to it, I feel like she wrote the album about me.

I would much rather listen to hard bop jazz and stfu (The Reverend), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 00:31 (seventeen years ago)

anyway eugh @ Badu's placing, and I will check out Gang Gangs Dance due to lex & Tim's co-signing. A

half troll half biscuit (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 00:32 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think I voted for it but a couple of quick observations about H&LA:

1) It's no more MOR/yawn/polite/revivalist than 90% of the stuff in this list - anyway put up with the risky/groundbreaking dance music albums everyone should have been voting for
2) also the "primitive house revivalism" angle is as over-emphasised as afrobeat is for VW - as far as I can tell it really only applies to "You Belong" and the Club Mix of "Blind" - which actually are the best tracks go figure
3) Faze Action don't sound anything at all like H&LA (I like Faze Action but it's a different sound come on)

Was kinda hoping Jagger wrote this.

Ringtone bisexual bible shower (The stickman from the hilarious xkcd comics), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 00:32 (seventeen years ago)

you guys should check out the New Amerykah poll thread (I think), Rev wrote some great stuff about the album in there

half troll half biscuit (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 00:33 (seventeen years ago)

xxxxp i know man you said so...its a grate album...the pppl on here who dont get it just dont have the right frame of reference yet....theyll come around reverend...

37 x 18 = (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 00:33 (seventeen years ago)

yeah that 4th World War poll is easily one of the cooler threads on ILM

37 x 18 = (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 00:33 (seventeen years ago)

co-sign on the greatness of the badu album, just listening for first time tonight. wasn't around for discussions when it came out, but i'd just like to say thx to this thread for showing me, yah it's pretty nuts... wau!

mark cl, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 00:34 (seventeen years ago)

Also, I would like to point out that everyone who didn't vote for Badu is dead to me. I mean, if we could collectively send something as amazing, but kinda niche-y, as "Happy House" to #2, there's no fucking excuse for New Amerykah not to win this poll.

I would much rather listen to hard bop jazz and stfu (The Reverend), Tuesday, 17 February 2009 00:34 (seventeen years ago)

it's so good!!

mark cl, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 00:34 (seventeen years ago)

*goes, right now, to find a copy of Badu's album*

I'll think of it as ILM's present

I actually rather fancy I'll like it, given the several reviews I've seen.

what's so baffling about people loving something that sounds like arthur russell, disco, and house with pop vocals. plus DFA seal of approval. seems tailor made for ILM.

(p.s. not being cynical here, it's a great record! probably the best thing I've heard so far this year)
