a pox on mike love

am0n, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 21:33 (thirteen years ago)

i do wonder if certain members of the band fought to have all the phases of the beach boys given "fair" representation on this box set. the last box set basically skipped the latter-day (late 70s–90s) stuff or passed over it very quickly.

probably about 3% of beach boys fanatics are truly interested in hearing outtakes from "keepin the summer alive"

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Tuesday, 11 June 2013 21:46 (thirteen years ago)

two months pass...

ok, i'm going to do a POXX:

1. I Get Around
2. God Only Knows
3. Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)
4. Gettin' Hungry
5. Don't Worry Baby
6. Don't Back Down
7. Kiss Me Baby (this will have to stand in for the suite of ballads on side B of Beach Boys Today)
8. Wendy
9. Wild Honey
10. Wonderful

11. Hushabye
12. When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)
13. Darlin'
14. Falling in Love (Lady) (will have to stand in for the better Dennis tracks--there are only a few IMO)
15. Little Honda
16. Girl Don't Tell Me
17. You Still Believe in Me
18. This Whole World
19. 'Til I Die
20. Surfer Girl

although i'm kind of a diehard fan and listen to those almost-no-Brian '70s albums and enjoy (most of) them, I still feel their best stuff is from 64-66. i don't get the same burst of exaltation from the later stuff.

also, it's hard to separate the different parts of Smile for me, which is why only one song from that project made my list(s).

shouldn't surprise anyone to know that this

"Darlin'" is such an underrated tune, shoulda been a hit. a sentiment apparently shared by Brian, since he recorded at least 3 different versions of it

Did you vote in the tracks poll? A lot of us did top twenties in that:

It's About Time: Beach Boys Poll Results

Two years ago already!

timellison, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 23:36 (twelve years ago)

no, i usually miss the polls b/c i don't pay close enough attention to the board to know when they are happening. and that page is crashing my web browser :(

how did "I Get Around" fare in the poll? as huge as it is, I think that tune is not fully appreciated. it's extraordinary, one of the very best singles of the 1960s.

I guess that's a pretty happy result, although there's a preponderance of ballads and softer tunes. beach boys were a rock band!

anyone else rate gettin' hungry? that's one of those unintentionally (?) avant-garde things they came up with frequently enough. i love the stark contrast b/t verses and chorus.

Warms my heart to see high placement of Let The Wind Blow. So perfect. Cabin Essence top 10 is right on as well, mebbe my favorite smile item. But no Dance Dance Dance? ;_;

i believe we can c.h.u.d. all night (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 00:45 (twelve years ago)

"let the wind blow" is a great song and should've been on my list. it covers a lot of musical ground in two and a half minutes.

i keep coming back to smiley smile and wild honey, even if the former is kind of denigrated since it's not smile. but for me they are really satisfying records, as long as you skip "transcendental meditation" (in theory I like the dissonant nature of that song but it just doesn't work, and certainly breaks the mood of the LP).

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Friday, 13 September 2013 00:49 (twelve years ago)

i have to admit that none of the subsequent albums really do it for me, even though there are a lot of gems sprinkled around. i just can't accept "sunflower" or "holland" as great albums b/c there are a few too many disposable songs, and occasionally an embarrassing one. (and some songs that are somehow both great _and_ embarrassing, like some of dennis's stuff like "cuddle up.")

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Friday, 13 September 2013 00:51 (twelve years ago)

i should add that i like a lot of textures/instrumentation they were exploring in late 60s/early 70s--the electric piano, the moog bass, etc.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Friday, 13 September 2013 00:52 (twelve years ago)

oh and finally i do really like "do it again" but somehow what that song _signifies_ (a self-conscious, nostalgic return to "classic" beach boys themes) kind of gets in the way of how it _sounds_.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Friday, 13 September 2013 00:53 (twelve years ago)

The old smiley smile/wild honey 2fer was my first beach boys. I remember it had amazing liner notes. Wish I still had it for that reason.

by the time they get around to the last few 70s albums they just kind of give up on there being anything meaningful to write about tho, which is a bit lol. Peter Buck writes the "Love You" ones, I think Tom Petty writes one of the others

This is a great obscurity from about 1971 I can't find a Youtube of - this one is from before Brian and Carl added their vocal overdubs. It's still pretty great!

Murry and Brian co-write actually. Only song in existence with that particular songwriting credit.

574 srsly (Lee626), Friday, 13 September 2013 17:07 (twelve years ago)

Was "Reggie Dunbar" because Murry was still under contract to another label for Many Moods?

574 srsly (Lee626), Friday, 13 September 2013 17:09 (twelve years ago)

Break Away's a good song, although the extra dry production has always seemed strange and uncharacteristic of Brian. I think it says in the two-fer liner notes about that one that Mike was pissed that it was "under-produced", which is sort of true.

what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 13 September 2013 17:13 (twelve years ago)

the '70s album reissues were done later and the liner notes are hit and miss (most are missing the band-history stuff that was on all of the 60s stuff) and there are _no_ bonus tracks. but they sound real good.

although if the liners were more thorough i guess it'd mostly be about band members' drug abuse and mental breakdowns, etc. just an ugly, tangled story i imagine.

so annoyed that capitol took two-fers w/ bonus tracks out of print and replaced them with those stereo+mono things. although i admit i prefer everything in mono. but i hate that all the great bonus tracks just disappeared. see also most recent reissues of elvis costello LPs.

"reggie dunbar" sounds like a jamaican producer; maybe it's murry wilson's rasta alter-ego.
