warm, wonderful sounds of funky, melancholic robots skirting around the edges of the discotheque, alternately wondering what life’s about and deciding it’s all about forgetting to worry what it’s all about

*retches violently*

the late great, Monday, 10 June 2013 20:33 (thirteen years ago)

thanks!

NOT an xp

we're up all night to get (s1ocki), Monday, 10 June 2013 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

it's a good mix though

the late great, Monday, 10 June 2013 20:37 (thirteen years ago)

maybe just not a bad mix

the late great, Monday, 10 June 2013 20:38 (thirteen years ago)

nah it's pretty good

the late great, Monday, 10 June 2013 20:40 (thirteen years ago)

BUT i think just about every track is "warmer" and "funkier" and more wonderful than just about everything on RAM

the late great, Monday, 10 June 2013 20:41 (thirteen years ago)

like "within" sounds like "far side virtual" compared to OMD

the late great, Monday, 10 June 2013 20:44 (thirteen years ago)

I'm a natural curmudgeon about contemporary music, especially when it's "retro". But the album really works for me, a few small quibbles aside. To each his own--we all still have the great original stuff.

Soundslike, Monday, 10 June 2013 20:49 (thirteen years ago)

I'm curious--are you as skeptical of the Italians Do It Better stuff? Or to they get it more right, in your opinion? Listening to 'After Dark' for the first time in a few years, and thinking it stacks up pretty darned well against the "original" stuff.

Soundslike, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 15:16 (thirteen years ago)

two tracks in and this mix is totally stellar, great work soundslike

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 11 June 2013 15:49 (thirteen years ago)

this mix rules

http://threeframes.net (gr8080), Tuesday, 11 June 2013 15:52 (thirteen years ago)

It's definitely top notch.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 15:54 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah it's fantastic. Doing the rounds on twitter too iirc

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 15:54 (thirteen years ago)

Glad you all dig it. I've been pent up not having time to make mixes for three years, so the new Daft Punk coming out right when I finished grad school--couldn't pass up the excuse. Cool thing was a bunch of the stuff I'd been wanting to mix anyway over the last couple years was a legitimate response to 'Random Access Memories'. Couldn't believe that even the sad singer-songwriter dramatic stuff was on RAM--that Beaver & Krause track had been in my pocket for years, and it worked perfectly.

Soundslike, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

i'm not as skeptical of IDIB, mostly because they haven't gotten the same level of overblown praise that DP has, partly because their methods seem updated compared to the old stuff, and perhaps most of all because their tunes are just much more listenable to my ears than the new daft punk

the late great, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 17:24 (thirteen years ago)

listened to ye mix again btw and it's real nice

the late great, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 17:34 (thirteen years ago)

Makes sense. Pharrel's vocal lines leave something to be desired--mainly, Michael Jackson being alive to sing them himself. But I'm won over, nevertheless.

Soundslike, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 18:32 (thirteen years ago)

And thanks!

SFJ returns to the album..

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 11 June 2013 23:08 (thirteen years ago)

I know this is being super pedantic but re: the "no female voices" thing, the choir on "Touch" is an all-female choir, not a boy choir.

ttyih boi (crüt), Tuesday, 11 June 2013 23:12 (thirteen years ago)

It does stand out, though, that they've never had a front-and-center female lead vocal, given the genres they're working in. . .

Soundslike, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 23:29 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, I agree it is notable.

ttyih boi (crüt), Tuesday, 11 June 2013 23:30 (thirteen years ago)

i mean it does seem like whatever vocalists they used always function as stand-ins for the robots themselves

乒乓, Wednesday, 12 June 2013 01:44 (thirteen years ago)

I've been dying to hear a Daft Punk track with a solid female disco vocal myself for quite some time. I wonder if it will ever happen.

Chantilly Bass, Wednesday, 12 June 2013 02:00 (thirteen years ago)

Sfj surprisingly OTM

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 12 June 2013 03:37 (thirteen years ago)

i tend to like him better when he's doing more off the cuff pieces

i didn't even give much of a fuck that you were mod (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 12 June 2013 03:42 (thirteen years ago)

'Evolution of Get Lucky' is fun.

Fanois och Alexander (Merdeyeux), Wednesday, 12 June 2013 04:05 (thirteen years ago)

i still really like this album, but jesus am i sick of moroder's monologue

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 12 June 2013 04:41 (thirteen years ago)

I do wish that was separated out as its own track or whatever.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Wednesday, 12 June 2013 04:43 (thirteen years ago)

i swear i'm not trying to be challopsy here but i put this away right after it streeted and haven't felt too much impetus to return except for lose yourself to dance and doing it right
if i want to hear get lucky i can just walk outside

i didn't even give much of a fuck that you were mod (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 12 June 2013 04:49 (thirteen years ago)

I can't get enough of listening to "Touch"

Gukbe, Wednesday, 12 June 2013 06:23 (thirteen years ago)

I got this album, listened to it twice and thought "oh I like that" but then moved back to Vampire Weekend and Classixx and other things. The last two days, however, I haven't been able to stop listening to it.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 12 June 2013 06:24 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think I get the point of "Evolution of Get Lucky"

ttyih boi (crüt), Wednesday, 12 June 2013 21:15 (thirteen years ago)

i was hoping it was going to be an actual song from each decade with the same chord progression

http://threeframes.net (gr8080), Wednesday, 12 June 2013 21:19 (thirteen years ago)

the 2020s "Get Lucky" sounded like a generic late-90s WARP records pastiche.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 12 June 2013 21:43 (thirteen years ago)

the 20s through 40s ones all sounded like vague old man hat guy impressions of THEE OLDE TYMES

i don't even have an internet (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 12 June 2013 21:47 (thirteen years ago)

I was kind of sick of late-90s Warp revivalism by 2020.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 June 2013 22:02 (thirteen years ago)

It was just kind of like, don't you have electro-house pastiches to be making?

The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 June 2013 22:03 (thirteen years ago)

It's weird how 2020 still sounds like 'the distant future' but it's only like 7 years away. Music could conceivably sound pretty simliar to now.

it'll sound exactly the same as now but it'll be made by middle schoolers with their google glass apps

precious bonsai children of new york (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 June 2013 22:19 (thirteen years ago)

If RAM hits like Discovery it'll sound like Get Lucky

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 12 June 2013 22:33 (thirteen years ago)

the guitars on this thing sound uniformly amazing
