BUT i think just about every track is "warmer" and "funkier" and more wonderful than just about everything on RAM

like "within" sounds like "far side virtual" compared to OMD

I'm a natural curmudgeon about contemporary music, especially when it's "retro". But the album really works for me, a few small quibbles aside. To each his own--we all still have the great original stuff.

I'm curious--are you as skeptical of the Italians Do It Better stuff? Or to they get it more right, in your opinion? Listening to 'After Dark' for the first time in a few years, and thinking it stacks up pretty darned well against the "original" stuff.

Glad you all dig it. I've been pent up not having time to make mixes for three years, so the new Daft Punk coming out right when I finished grad school--couldn't pass up the excuse. Cool thing was a bunch of the stuff I'd been wanting to mix anyway over the last couple years was a legitimate response to 'Random Access Memories'. Couldn't believe that even the sad singer-songwriter dramatic stuff was on RAM--that Beaver & Krause track had been in my pocket for years, and it worked perfectly.

i'm not as skeptical of IDIB, mostly because they haven't gotten the same level of overblown praise that DP has, partly because their methods seem updated compared to the old stuff, and perhaps most of all because their tunes are just much more listenable to my ears than the new daft punk

Makes sense. Pharrel's vocal lines leave something to be desired--mainly, Michael Jackson being alive to sing them himself. But I'm won over, nevertheless.

I know this is being super pedantic but re: the "no female voices" thing, the choir on "Touch" is an all-female choir, not a boy choir.

It does stand out, though, that they've never had a front-and-center female lead vocal, given the genres they're working in. . .

yeah, I agree it is notable.

i mean it does seem like whatever vocalists they used always function as stand-ins for the robots themselves

I've been dying to hear a Daft Punk track with a solid female disco vocal myself for quite some time. I wonder if it will ever happen.

i swear i'm not trying to be challopsy here but i put this away right after it streeted and haven't felt too much impetus to return except for lose yourself to dance and doing it right

I can't get enough of listening to "Touch"

I got this album, listened to it twice and thought "oh I like that" but then moved back to Vampire Weekend and Classixx and other things. The last two days, however, I haven't been able to stop listening to it.

I don't think I get the point of "Evolution of Get Lucky"

i was hoping it was going to be an actual song from each decade with the same chord progression

the 2020s "Get Lucky" sounded like a generic late-90s WARP records pastiche.

the 20s through 40s ones all sounded like vague old man hat guy impressions of THEE OLDE TYMES

I was kind of sick of late-90s Warp revivalism by 2020.

It was just kind of like, don't you have electro-house pastiches to be making?

It's weird how 2020 still sounds like 'the distant future' but it's only like 7 years away. Music could conceivably sound pretty simliar to now.
