What song wouldn't?

Popture, Saturday, 8 June 2013 09:42 (thirteen years ago)

a little late but 'motherboard' is like, totally of a piece with anything off the back half of discovery. like, think of motherboard as version 2.0 of 'veridis quo'

"Got a sweet R.A.M.-inspired mix coming up, with Brian Bennett, Beaver & Krause, Zeus B. Held, The Jacksons, Vuolo & Grande, Space Art, Roland Bocquet, Curt Boettcher, Gino Soccio, Stardrive and others. . .

this sounds great.

i love this album. i wish some of the vocals were more treated than they are (it is a bit too star heavy, i think daft punk would still have made a big impact even if it was someone more obscure than pharrell/casablancas, etc) or the guests were less dominant somehow. the panda bear song might be my favourite not just because its such a great song but because i miss daft punk using drum machines. i love that even for an album so big hearted, its still so divisive. i cant decide if the sequencing could be better or not - when get lucky comes in after touch, it seems like a perfect transition. i think the album would lose some of its mood if all the funkier songs were frontloaded.

StillAdvance, Saturday, 8 June 2013 12:07 (thirteen years ago)

the "Get Lucky" -> "Beyond" transition reminds me of George Benson's "Give Me The Night" -> "What's On Your Mind." Disco song -> Orchestral fanfare -> mellow funk song.

There's a moment on "Instant Crush" towards the end where Julian stretches his falsetto... it kind of sounds like Andy Bell on "Oh L'Amour" to my ears.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Sunday, 9 June 2013 02:19 (thirteen years ago)

"Instant crush" is great, it's begging for a Todd Edwards remix.

brimstead, Sunday, 9 June 2013 02:20 (thirteen years ago)

Maybe not the final version of the mix, but I think it's close. Not an influences mix (though I'm sure Daft Punk like most of the artists), and not trying to fully capture all facets of 'Random Access Memories,' but basically a response to how much I like the album, and an opportunity to spend more time in the same sonic universe.

Had probably twice as many possible inclusions as what made the final mix, and I'm sure ILM could suggest dozens more. . .

warm, wonderful sounds of funky, melancholic robots skirting around the edges of the discotheque, alternately wondering what life’s about and deciding it’s all about forgetting to worry what it’s all about

*retches violently*

we're up all night to get (s1ocki), Monday, 10 June 2013 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

it's a good mix though

the late great, Monday, 10 June 2013 20:37 (thirteen years ago)

maybe just not a bad mix

the late great, Monday, 10 June 2013 20:38 (thirteen years ago)

nah it's pretty good

the late great, Monday, 10 June 2013 20:40 (thirteen years ago)

BUT i think just about every track is "warmer" and "funkier" and more wonderful than just about everything on RAM

the late great, Monday, 10 June 2013 20:41 (thirteen years ago)

like "within" sounds like "far side virtual" compared to OMD

the late great, Monday, 10 June 2013 20:44 (thirteen years ago)

I'm a natural curmudgeon about contemporary music, especially when it's "retro". But the album really works for me, a few small quibbles aside. To each his own--we all still have the great original stuff.

Soundslike, Monday, 10 June 2013 20:49 (thirteen years ago)

I'm curious--are you as skeptical of the Italians Do It Better stuff? Or to they get it more right, in your opinion? Listening to 'After Dark' for the first time in a few years, and thinking it stacks up pretty darned well against the "original" stuff.

two tracks in and this mix is totally stellar, great work soundslike

It's definitely top notch.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 15:54 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah it's fantastic. Doing the rounds on twitter too iirc

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 15:54 (thirteen years ago)

Glad you all dig it. I've been pent up not having time to make mixes for three years, so the new Daft Punk coming out right when I finished grad school--couldn't pass up the excuse. Cool thing was a bunch of the stuff I'd been wanting to mix anyway over the last couple years was a legitimate response to 'Random Access Memories'. Couldn't believe that even the sad singer-songwriter dramatic stuff was on RAM--that Beaver & Krause track had been in my pocket for years, and it worked perfectly.

Soundslike, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

i'm not as skeptical of IDIB, mostly because they haven't gotten the same level of overblown praise that DP has, partly because their methods seem updated compared to the old stuff, and perhaps most of all because their tunes are just much more listenable to my ears than the new daft punk

the late great, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 17:24 (thirteen years ago)

listened to ye mix again btw and it's real nice

the late great, Tuesday, 11 June 2013 17:34 (thirteen years ago)

Makes sense. Pharrel's vocal lines leave something to be desired--mainly, Michael Jackson being alive to sing them himself. But I'm won over, nevertheless.
