and tvotr it seems to me have inherited the Big Important Band mantle that always needs to be held by someone. (recent emeritus: radiohead, u2, r.e.m.) which is fine, i guess, there are worse candidates out there. that i never actually want to listen to tvotr is sort of irrelevant to their position.

i do like 'Dr Carter', and not just for the Axelrod (which actually feels kinda wasted as a hook source tho can see why it was picked for the concept)

"La La" is awesome and definitely one of my favorite parts of the album (although "unbearable" is not an inaccurate description of Brisco's verse)

i am surprised to see wayne end up that low. really like the album, and obv coming in 9th is still a pretty good nod. pretty sure a couple things that beat it are going to make my blood boil a bit, but whatever

9 aint that low, c3 wasnt even the 9th best southern rap album last year

i dunno about techno and house placing in the top 10 because it seems like the bobbins crew avoided these end-of-year polls. the albums that were mentioned upthread for the house and techno category (shed and that duo who had the big radioslave remix) weren't even nommed. if i look at the top ten that i mailed in, there are only five entries that are bona fide house or techno, and part of the reason for this is because the noms were really sparse in this area. (believe me i went through the whole list quite thoroughly).

i think these lists would be quite different if more ilm regulars contributed. it seems difficult to say that this is an official ilm end-of-year list because of that.

I've been kicking around ILM since 2002, and this is the first year-end poll I've ever voted in. This place is full of late-adopters.

ILM posters who dont vote by now are never going to vote. If you want more voters ILM will need more new blood I think. Not surprised at increased voters though as there has been a lot of new posters in the past year who do participate in ordinary polls.

tbh i didn't vote in this poll as it's clearly for lamoids, but the one thing that would interest me, rather than a "2000s" poll is a "2000" poll in 2010, a 2001 in 2011 etc etc etc.

yeah i never really participated either so i shouldn't talk shit. i gotta say that end-of-year seems more and more like an anachronism or a formality now (heh speaking of talking shit). i wonder if you'd get more or less consensus if the voter turnout was higher. if i e.g. surf the p&j lists i barely look at the top ten. instead i go directly to the critics' lists.

higher turnout = more (and duller) consensus, pretty much always. otoh low turnout is just pointless. 100 or so ballots seems a good balance.

What could make it less consensus based is if more of the ringtone/rolling metal/rolling country/rolling psych/bobbins etc voted. Lots of each just dont think its worth voting as they think their choices wont place.
Then again I dont know if that would make any difference to the top 10. The fact that hip-hop gets in the top 10 every year does suggest that at least could get higher or more entries in the top 10.

However maybe most ilxors dont want more niche acts in the top 20 considering the "i prefer the top 20 to 50-21 albums" posts that have been made here?

If bands that no-one had heard of cracked the top 5 I think there would be complaints.

I'm halfway through their new EP No Way Down and it's jaw-droppingly good, "has music ever been this good" good. "Collapsing At Your Desktop" is one of the most amazing things I've heard, something like Saint Etienne's "London Belongs To Me" meets The Field. "June Evening" is gorgeous melancholy tropical pop.

This after "Hold On To Me, Baby" was already the prettiest thing I'd heard this year.

This stuff blows their first EP out of the water. They're getting better and better, and they're already the most bewitching music I've heard this year.

really falling in love with In Ghost Colours this summer. this album is firmly in my top 10 for this year. it's the 80's vibe that has done it for me.

cut copy took the very depths of your soul and smashed them over the insides of your skull with some very illegally delicious things

If never heard Cut Copy before, but this sounds kinda boring indeed. Nice synth sounds, but the singer is quite bland, and the song really lacks the sort of poppy sensibility it's aiming for.

I played the Cut Copy album to death over the summer but there's really nothing to explain to people who don't get it. It's pure surface enjoyment and nothing else.

New Order in 1989 with technique, Cut Copy in 2008 with In Ghost Colours - both similar concepts

It took me a while to warm up to In Ghost Colours, in part because it felt almost too rote and professional in contrast to the homemade-seeming exuberance of Bright Like Neon Love. I still don't love it, but there are a half-dozen songs that are pretty solid jams.

i think the next one will surprise many people here...
