We need to persuade the good man to make this the cover of a new release:

Words cannot do justice to the extent of my infatuation with his 20 May Ministry of Sound set.

Tim F, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 21:25 (ten years ago) link

I like most of the "Classified" one for DJ Magazine, I think it is. I discovered that somewhere else but it must have been mentioned on this thread already somewhere.

... what, don't look at me like that

r|t|c, Wednesday, 19 June 2013 11:50 (ten years ago) link

What are these horrific Modern Rock vocals at 11 minutes into the (recent?) Classified/DJ Mag mix? Is this some sort of joke?

Rudiphmental Remix (_Rudipherous_), Friday, 21 June 2013 18:49 (ten years ago) link

(around 11 minutes in)

is this mix really exclusive to ilx?? it's hott!

it's almost as if he took pity knowing a oldskool set wouldnt be enough to sate his loyal crackheads for a whole month

r|t|c, Monday, 24 June 2013 09:58 (ten years ago) link

i was sort of nervous to ask him if it was an actual ILX exclusive! not wanting to look a gift horse in the mouth. but... it seems possible?

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 24 June 2013 10:04 (ten years ago) link

haha the art

The Reverend, Monday, 24 June 2013 10:26 (ten years ago) link

made my day this.

Whats this old-skool (well he says 2005 in the lyrics) MC tune right at the end?

and 'Sherlock (Taiki & Nulight remix)' is so fucking good.

Thank you DJ Q! Really liking this so far. (Thank you ILM too, especially Tim F, without which I probably wouldn't have found my way to this music.)

thank u based Q

moullet, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 19:52 (ten years ago) link

I'm going to spend forever racking my brain to figure out what the sample is in DJ Q - "Everytime". I feel like it's something I haven't heard in years, but that one vocal run is so recognizable, if not placable.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:09 (ten years ago) link

The synths remind me a lot of the Dreem Teem Original Dub Mix of Neneh Cherry's "Buddy X", but not sure otherwise.

Tim F, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:24 (ten years ago) link

^ yeah I've been doing the same. I don't think its the one but it really reminds of 'I pray' by N10-tainment, if you remember that old minor funky classic.

Benny B, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:24 (ten years ago) link

naw, it's the vocal sample, nothing to do with the synths. it might be the track after that I was thinking of tho, can't relisten right now.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:26 (ten years ago) link

amerie, 'talking to me'

seems like Q leaving 1xtra hasn't been such a bad thing after all. Love these hour long mixes.

Benny B, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 21:18 (ten years ago) link

Xxpost agreed, I've just been listening to the may one more in the past few weeks for obvious reasons.

And benny, I agree - the perfect length and much more accessible. Though maybe a step down for people who were getting a weekly fix before.

Tim F, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 21:29 (ten years ago) link

I only started to listen to the 1xtra show about a year before it ended (not every week i admit). Obviously it was a peerless show but I like the concentrated 1 hour hit and it means i'm replaying and getting more out of them. This no-chat format also really highlights his mixing skills more and puts him centre-stage. Plus the guy's workrate outside of radio is so fierce, can't say I've felt a lack of Q in my life since the MOS show started so i'm happy.

Benny B, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 22:17 (ten years ago) link

i'd imagined losing the weekly fix would be a terrible loss but actually it's been really rewarding spending a bit longer marinating on each mix and getting into some close reading. (ok i probably wouldnt say no to fortnightly...)

i guess in retrospect q's 1xtra departure could be seen to be serendipitous as from then on garage has diffused out into ubiquity whilst simultaneously losing its core heartland to some extent - everywhere but nowhere. "essential garage" becomes aptly named under q's direction - not simply an exercise in (superbly) mixing together whatever's around at the moment but an ideological treatise on garageness itself, and rather than retreat back to basics to make the point like everyone else he instead approaches it by taking in even more of the surrounding ecology as possible and intuitively teases out the bubbling thread running through

r|t|c, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 22:36 (ten years ago) link

which is why i particularly ride for the march set cos i think he said more with what at the time seemed apparently "less" if you catch my drift
