The Sophie track totally fits into this, like I don't know anything about anyone involved in it but it's totally the right vibe.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 10:12 (thirteen years ago)
I prefer the vocal version to the dub, mind, but there's little difference.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 10:13 (thirteen years ago)
i guess just because i first heard of the sophie track via the glasgow crowd (jackmaster etc) who are a pretty different scene to both the london tastestep crew and your black butter/disclosure axis
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 10:18 (thirteen years ago)
Looking forward to this mix (Benny B - your mixes are always great!).
I like that Mixcloud is "non-downloadable" because it means that it is streaming at a higher quality than e.g. Soundcloud, and of course it is very hard to make something non-downloadable, anyway.
― toby, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 10:59 (thirteen years ago)
it is seriously a matter of seconds to google a way to dl mixclouds ffs
― r|t|c, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 11:17 (thirteen years ago)

― 乒乓, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 11:17 (thirteen years ago)
I´ll stick it up for download on zippyshare or something tonight when I get back from work, I had no idea you could dl mixclouds tbh

How about downloading stream-only Ministry of Sound radio sets? Anyone?
(excited to hear this Benny)
Also, re Kidnap Kid, was listening to "Animaux" again today and I just die every time the groove cuts out and that woman shrieks "DREAMER!"
Dude's approach to sampled vocals feels oddly reminiscent to me of how golden age uk funky used to do it, all those unnamed tunes like the ones on that hallowed Mak 10 / Shantie deja set or the tune that sampled Jagged Edge.

if you're just after the q sets then the show puts them up themselves

I like Kidnap Kid a lot and played the Alphaville EP loads last year but it would never have occurred to me to mentally group him with any of the rest of this stuff. I'd assumed he was a higher quality version of one of those blippy blog-friendly electronica types, partly because his stuff is so brightly-coloured and melodic (and more than a bit cutesy as well).
Also, this record sleeve:

― Matt DC, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 13:12 (thirteen years ago)
xp excellent! The 20 May set I was streaming sounded amazing.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 13:13 (thirteen years ago)
Matt you're not wrong, the stuff on that ep reminds me of Damu as much as anything else. But more recent single "So Close" is a pop-house jam. And "Animaux", though basically a sequel to "Lazarus Taxon", somehow feels more thread-appropriate as well, I think because of how ruthlessly it pivots around its curated vocal samples. Plus its 1993 organ.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 13:16 (thirteen years ago)
Also his remix of Rudimental's "Waiting All Night" is a lot ruder than you'd expect from his other material.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 13:21 (thirteen years ago)
yeah matt otm. i really like how kk's stuff is always so clean and self-contained, even when he samples (or rather how he samples - upfront and recognisable with a simple purity) - most of everything else i listen to is blurs and echoes either in function or in spirit whereas he retains a quiet space of his own. and obv that lends itself so well to the sentiment of something like 'so close'
it's basically like total bedroom producer music but in the best, most charming possible way - 'lazarus taxon' et al feels like an afternoon well spent more so than it ever does a ukg dancemix bubbler
― r|t|c, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 13:25 (thirteen years ago)
heh i probably prefer the clean bandit mix of 'waiting all night' precisely for it being the most idyllictronic. it's a nice subtext to things that is thoughtful wrt songcraft
― r|t|c, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 13:31 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah this year's EP is fantastic as well. Something a bit 'major label metal album cover c. 2000' about this sleeve though:

haha i was just reading an interview where he says the first record he ever bought was 'another planet' by pendulum
― r|t|c, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 13:39 (thirteen years ago)
oh but then in another one he says the first single he bought was 'frontier psychiatrist'! figures
these postbass blogs are like smash hits

First the Ball J Afrobeats mixes, and now this - Benny B, you are my new hero.
― mike t-diva, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 15:07 (thirteen years ago)
mainly for those who are hopelessly behind and need to catch up tbh. Lots of tunes from this thread.
Listening to it now and it tricked me into enjoying Angel Haze. I like when that sort of thing happens.

― Benny B, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 20:31 (thirteen years ago)
it says ""Got Me" by Sinead Harnett may be available for download from Amazon."
wtf!?
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 5 June 2013 20:33 (thirteen years ago)
look i'm sorry but it's just not good enough ben. if you had any respect for our sanctified rights you'd call us up individually and play it down the phone
― r|t|c, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 20:38 (thirteen years ago)
i'm just sort of freaked out by how it's recommending sinead harnett to me.
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 5 June 2013 21:09 (thirteen years ago)
How has only zippyshare managed to avoid the censors?
Anyway, the mix is up here. http://www52.zippyshare.com/v/47756244/file.html

Both of these are lovely!
The Riton really makes explicit how the Skream boogie maneuvers fit in within this broader divepool-house sound
(and which sound is a really good look for Ill Blu, esp. after their recent distressing excursions into tasteful seriousness)
― Tim F, Friday, 14 June 2013 21:53 (twelve years ago)
cba to listen again now but iirc wasnt 'me x u (plastik cups)' at the end of ill blu's xlr8r set somewhat in this vein
― r|t|c, Friday, 14 June 2013 21:56 (twelve years ago)
Yes in the sense of being straight house with yearning vocals - still more in their prior metallic throb sonic mode though whereas this is a full blown embrace of current trends.
― Tim F, Friday, 14 June 2013 21:59 (twelve years ago)
By recent distressing excursions into tasteful seriousness I mean that EP they put about six months ago
― Tim F, Friday, 14 June 2013 22:01 (twelve years ago)
ah right yes that seems more likely. clearly i must have mentally tagged it with 'spoons'
― r|t|c, Friday, 14 June 2013 22:03 (twelve years ago)
Thats the best Ill Blu tune I've heard for ages. I predict Fuzzy Logik will crop up again in this thread before the year's out (fingers crossed).
Not pop-house, but Black Butter signing Scrufizzer is a good look. Is this track produced by Funkystepz?https://soundcloud.com/scrufizzer/scrufizzer-illusion
