The Sophie track totally fits into this, like I don't know anything about anyone involved in it but it's totally the right vibe.

I prefer the vocal version to the dub, mind, but there's little difference.

i guess just because i first heard of the sophie track via the glasgow crowd (jackmaster etc) who are a pretty different scene to both the london tastestep crew and your black butter/disclosure axis

I like that Mixcloud is "non-downloadable" because it means that it is streaming at a higher quality than e.g. Soundcloud, and of course it is very hard to make something non-downloadable, anyway.

Dude's approach to sampled vocals feels oddly reminiscent to me of how golden age uk funky used to do it, all those unnamed tunes like the ones on that hallowed Mak 10 / Shantie deja set or the tune that sampled Jagged Edge.

I like Kidnap Kid a lot and played the Alphaville EP loads last year but it would never have occurred to me to mentally group him with any of the rest of this stuff. I'd assumed he was a higher quality version of one of those blippy blog-friendly electronica types, partly because his stuff is so brightly-coloured and melodic (and more than a bit cutesy as well).

Matt you're not wrong, the stuff on that ep reminds me of Damu as much as anything else. But more recent single "So Close" is a pop-house jam. And "Animaux", though basically a sequel to "Lazarus Taxon", somehow feels more thread-appropriate as well, I think because of how ruthlessly it pivots around its curated vocal samples. Plus its 1993 organ.

Also his remix of Rudimental's "Waiting All Night" is a lot ruder than you'd expect from his other material.

yeah matt otm. i really like how kk's stuff is always so clean and self-contained, even when he samples (or rather how he samples - upfront and recognisable with a simple purity) - most of everything else i listen to is blurs and echoes either in function or in spirit whereas he retains a quiet space of his own. and obv that lends itself so well to the sentiment of something like 'so close'

it's basically like total bedroom producer music but in the best, most charming possible way - 'lazarus taxon' et al feels like an afternoon well spent more so than it ever does a ukg dancemix bubbler

heh i probably prefer the clean bandit mix of 'waiting all night' precisely for it being the most idyllictronic. it's a nice subtext to things that is thoughtful wrt songcraft
