So the moral of the story is you all need to love "Lonesome Tonight" just a little bit more and every song on Technique a bit less.

Also, the one complaining of pointless programming had World In Motion on his ballot?!?! /DoesNotCompute

Kent Burt, Saturday, 1 June 2013 21:02 (thirteen years ago)

While i was riding my bike today I saw a guy walking a beagle and he was wearing a Movement tshirt. Thought for sure this was a sign that my #1 would finally be #1 but it's ok to lose to Temptation, but it's the last time.

Temptation is more quintessential NO than any song I can think of anyway.

Hooray for NO and thank goodness I kept my muzzle on toward the end.

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Saturday, 1 June 2013 21:05 (thirteen years ago)

Funny that 'Sabotage' didn't get a single vote. It wasn't on my ballot, but I still think it's one of their very best late-period songs.

Millsner, Saturday, 1 June 2013 21:07 (thirteen years ago)

This is the first and last poll I'll participate in.

― brotherlovesdub, Saturday, June 1, 2013 3:38 PM (27 minutes ago)

I hope you'll reconsider this!

Thank you for talkin' to me Williamsburg (WilliamC), Saturday, 1 June 2013 21:07 (thirteen years ago)

Thank You Millsner. You made this poll look great!

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 June 2013 21:08 (thirteen years ago)

also thanks to all the voters, makes ILM a special place.

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 June 2013 21:09 (thirteen years ago)

The pleasure was all ours, Bee! Looking forward to your Boos poll, although I can't imagine it'll get as many ballots as this one has... still looking forward to it, though!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 21:11 (thirteen years ago)

I have an odd half-memory that I learned about Blue Monday being the biggest selling 12" of all time from an episode of A Question of Sport. It's perhaps the most boring memory I have

I love this. I also reckon it wasn't a big seller at all, but that that story and the losing money one were cooked up specifically in a print-the-legend thing

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 1 June 2013 21:12 (thirteen years ago)

Well, 'Blue Monday' went onto sell over a million copies on 12", so it was a big seller... I think they lost money on the original sleeve with the cut-outs (5p per sleeve), but apparently once that batch run out it was issued in a much less expensive sleeve, so the amount of money they actually lost is up for debate. They definitely didn't lose 5p on all the copies that were sold, if Peter Saville is to be believed.

@Bee OK: Are there any songs from 1981-1993 that didn't get a vote?

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 21:21 (thirteen years ago)

I mean, it would be pretty interesting to see which are actually ILM's least favourite New Order songs from their most active time.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 21:22 (thirteen years ago)

Pleased to see I wasn't alone in voting for "Don't Do It" or "Avalanche". :)

These are some of my favourite lyrics ever.

I'm a tiny bit disappointed Ceremony beat out Regret (my second favourite song of all time) but can't complain really, this has been my favourite poll so far. One of the few polls where I like every song that's placed.

Looking forward to your Boos poll

i want to update Wikipedia for the Boo Radleys poll. will have to learn how to update pages though, it looks kind of complex.

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 June 2013 22:38 (thirteen years ago)

i'm doing Steely Dan next.

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 June 2013 22:38 (thirteen years ago)

hooray! Just a couple of nights ago I was searching around assuming I'd missed the Steely Dan poll, would think it would be top of the ILM list.

5 number ones only ties Ceremony with Dream Attack.

― Millsner, Saturday, June 1, 2013 11:31 PM (Yesterday)

This kind of sums up the poll for me ... I never knew that people liked "Dream Attack" so much.

Why were remixes of Regret and 1963 counted separately? Wasn't Run 2 the only exception to this?

Many thanks to Millsner and Bee for doing this poll!

Why were remixes of Regret and 1963 counted separately? Wasn't Run 2 the only exception to this?

this is because that same person voted for "Regret" and "1963" separately. both times the originals came out on top. that is why i took out "Run 2" but now think that i should have included it with the original countdown.

I'll just share my top 10 and top 5 albums (and I like Turrican's putting the final rankings, so I'll bite that as well):

SONGS
1 The Perfect Kiss (#4)
2 Ceremony (#2)
3 Your Silent Face (#8)
4 Temptation (#1)
5 Regret (#5)
6 Bizarre Love Triangle (#6)
7 Dreams Never End (#17)
8 Age of Consent (#7)
9 Thieves Like Us (#16)
10 Everything's Gone Green (#13)

ALBUMS
1 Republic (#6)
2 Substance (#7)
3 Movement (#4)
4 Power Corruption and Lies (#2)
5 Brotherhood (#5)

My only real surprise is that Dreams Never End didn't end up in the top ten, I assumed there were enough Movement-heads voting to ensure that. All my friends have always hated Thieves Like Us, so I was prepared for that not ranking as high I ranked it. Another fun poll! Thanks to Bee OK and Millsner for their efforts, it was much appreciated. And now I'm going to spend some time listening to Low-Life, which I never gave the attention it probably deserves.

I like showing the 12" to teenagers and seeing if they can figure out what it is.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Sunday, 2 June 2013 04:35 (thirteen years ago)

wow you guys really don't like Blue Monday do you

if ILM didn't like the song it would not have shown up in the Top 10. "Blue Monday" had over exposure to deal with and it still landed at number 9.

in other words, i'm impressed with its standing. a true classic, still in 2013.

Bee OK, Sunday, 2 June 2013 05:55 (thirteen years ago)

Also most of us prefer Fanta Orange to Sunkist, which didn't help.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Sunday, 2 June 2013 05:58 (thirteen years ago)

More seriously, I feel like most of my top ten, save the top three, could have gone in almost any order. New Order's singles and best album tracks just have a very large top tier.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Sunday, 2 June 2013 06:01 (thirteen years ago)

44 ballots, 33 votes for Blue Monday, makes 11 who do not like it.

xpost Or 11 people who didn't bother voting for it because they knew it would end high no matter what and wanted to lend their support to some other song.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 2 June 2013 12:51 (thirteen years ago)

it's just weird to me, people saying it's "overplayed," because I NEVER hear that song and it's so obviously great

ttyih boi (crüt), Sunday, 2 June 2013 12:57 (thirteen years ago)

I hear the '88 remix a bunch on one of the local commercial radio stations.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 2 June 2013 12:58 (thirteen years ago)

they don't play any version on the radio here, though I guess I should be glad because I don't like the '88 version

ttyih boi (crüt), Sunday, 2 June 2013 13:03 (thirteen years ago)

In the early-mid 2000s Blue Monday felt like the token 'pop' moment on a million electro house mixes.

Pingu Unchained (dog latin), Sunday, 2 June 2013 13:05 (thirteen years ago)

Except maybe for my #1 (and absence of "Blue Monday"), this is like all my ballots where I'm just a casual fan--what a K-Tel best-of would look like:

1. “All Day Long” (50)
2. “Dreams Never End” (46)
3. “Ceremony” (43)
4. “Temptation” (40)
5. “Love Vigilantes” (38)
6. “Bizarre Love Triangle” (36)
7. “Fine Time” (35)
8. “The Perfect Kiss” (34)
9. “Your Silent Face” (33)
10. “Everything’s Gone Green” (32)

clemenza, Sunday, 2 June 2013 13:28 (thirteen years ago)

"Blue Monday" is ok, but I like a bunch of other NO songs more. It was never a pop event in my world the way say "True Faith" was, and I like NO best when they mix the robotic and human more amply.

RE: 'Blue Monday'
Yeah, I didn't place it that high for two reasons: 1) I figured it was a lock for the top ten, if not the top five and 2) I like it, yet it's never been my favorite anything. It's certainly a landmark moment in pop music, and a darn catchy tune, but they also have such a strong catalogue. It's really remarkable when you think about the high quality of their output up until the early 90's.

Overall, I am disappointed in the top five, but I can't honestly say that it's not totally representative of some of their best work — which just speaks volumes about how great they were (and still are, to a certain degree).

Austin, Sunday, 2 June 2013 14:45 (thirteen years ago)

Saw bunches of NO 12" at the record store yesterday -- the new arrivals bin looked like someone ~ 4 yrs older than me unloaded her entire youth into the bin. It was kinda sad!
