I'm just waking up to the horror that World In Motion might actually not make this. If Ceremony shows...

'temptation' always seemed to me the one that was most likely to the favorite of indie kids who liked dance music but didn't like dance music that much

True Faith, Silent Morning, The Promise and Pure Energy were in constant rotation and probably my favorite era of Pop radio in the States.

like, temptation was still raw enough in the margins that you wouldn't be betraying your indie ideals

It's not so much upset, it's called passion, and if you have none then you're on the wrong forum. Likewise, if this is how you get your kicks then I guess it's not so bad if 'Ceremony' isn't #1 after all... I mean, no matter what places and where it places, I clearly don't have a life as colossally empty as yours seems to be :) Dark in that basement, is it?

Yeah... I think this is ultimately one of the problems that I have with 'Temptation'. I like it, and I think the chorus is catchy as all hell, yet I'm not totally convinced they recorded a really great version of it. Where they seemed to nail a lot of other tracks in the studio, I don't think they got the best out of this one whenever they came to record it. I'm sure if it had been produced in a Technique kind of way, I would love it without any reservations.

Did you hear the version they rerecorded in 98? Think it was 98, anyway, it's quite good and may fit your tastes.

the idiosyncratic production (to put it generously) on the original 7"/12" of temptation are definitely part of their appeal. the song's charm and passion shine through the murk.

the '87 version has one of barney's best-ever vocals

my favourite version of all is probably their performance from the 1981 Taras Shevchenko video, where it wasn't even fully hashed-out yet!

I think my problem with Temptation is that I knew the remix first, which is dreadful.

5 number ones only ties Ceremony with Dream Attack.

Actually, I haven't! I've heard the original 7" and of course the '87 version on Substance... I'll give the '98 version a try, though. The problem I have with the Substance version is the sequencer line seems to be mixed too low, which is the whole thing that the song is built on!

I love that after 30 years of breaking down the stigma of dance music in indie culture, this poll ended like some fight between Xgau and Dave Marsh ca. 1982.

The best way to exorcise the Joy Division ghost was to create a song that made it self up as it went along. It could be two minutes, 10, 46, doesn't matter; it acquires verses and riffs like a rock rolling down a mountain does snow.

originally had round & round at 3 and perfect kiss at 4, decided to flip them and then accidentally left perfect kiss entirely off my ballot even though it was a contender for number one and is almost definitely the new order track i've listened to the most in my life. true faith making it to 3 w/ no number one votes seems weirdly fitting.

Hehehehehe... yeah. The strange thing is, I know a fair few people who, even though they tell me they like Joy Division's music, won't even give New Order a chance because they think their output is limited to songs like 'Blue Monday', 'True Faith' and 'World In Motion'. Oftentimes, and this has surprised me, it seems that many people don't even realise that New Order never actually stopped being a guitar-bass-drums band and did many songs in that configuration.

I recall hearing 'True Faith' far more on the radio or TV here than I ever did with, say, 'Bizarre Love Triangle'. 'Blue Monday' is the track that's had the biggest amount of airplay overall though, I should think!
