Pleased with the top 5, though I'm sick of "True Faith," myself. However the top 2 fall is fine with me.

New Order wrote and recorded "True Faith" and "1963" during a 10-day studio session with producer Stephen Hague. The two songs were written as new material for New Order's first singles compilation album, Substance 1987. After the two songs were recorded, the band's US management decided that "True Faith" was the stronger track and would be released as the new single, with "1963" as the B-side. "1963" was remixed and issued as a single in its own right in 1994.

"True Faith" was never used as a track on a regular album, though it did appear on most of New Order's "best of" collections (Substance 1987, The Best of New Order, Retro, Singles and International). The first public performance of the song took place at the 1987 Glastonbury Festival; this version appears on the group's BBC Radio 1 Live in Concert album.

The original 7" version of the song did not appear on any album until 2011's "Total from Joy Division to New Order".

You're a bit late for that... that happened when 'Doubts Even Here' came in at #43. "lol".

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:10 (thirteen years ago)

But hello anyway, zappi! You might want to put that bag of Doritos now, get out of those sweatpants and see some sunlight. Kthx. Bai!

There's been a few times over the years that I've thought that I was getting tired of 'True Faith', but really I never seem to. There's been pieces of music I've listened to death over the years where even if I take a break from it and come back to it, it seems to have lost its power through a lot of listens. When I haven't heard 'True Faith' for a while and I find myself listening to it again, it still remains as potent as ever.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:15 (thirteen years ago)

hello Turrican! its funny watching people get upset about nothing on the internet, isn't it!

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:15 (thirteen years ago)

ugh, Temptation beating out TPK and True Faith...

乒乓, Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:15 (thirteen years ago)

I'm just waking up to the horror that World In Motion might actually not make this. If Ceremony shows...

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:15 (thirteen years ago)

'temptation' always seemed to me the one that was most likely to the favorite of indie kids who liked dance music but didn't like dance music that much

乒乓, Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:17 (thirteen years ago)

True Faith, Silent Morning, The Promise and Pure Energy were in constant rotation and probably my favorite era of Pop radio in the States.

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:18 (thirteen years ago)

like, temptation was still raw enough in the margins that you wouldn't be betraying your indie ideals

It's not so much upset, it's called passion, and if you have none then you're on the wrong forum. Likewise, if this is how you get your kicks then I guess it's not so bad if 'Ceremony' isn't #1 after all... I mean, no matter what places and where it places, I clearly don't have a life as colossally empty as yours seems to be :) Dark in that basement, is it?

Yeah... I think this is ultimately one of the problems that I have with 'Temptation'. I like it, and I think the chorus is catchy as all hell, yet I'm not totally convinced they recorded a really great version of it. Where they seemed to nail a lot of other tracks in the studio, I don't think they got the best out of this one whenever they came to record it. I'm sure if it had been produced in a Technique kind of way, I would love it without any reservations.

other people's projections tend to give away more themselves than they realize. it's fascinating!

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:25 (thirteen years ago)

Did you hear the version they rerecorded in 98? Think it was 98, anyway, it's quite good and may fit your tastes.

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:26 (thirteen years ago)

the idiosyncratic production (to put it generously) on the original 7"/12" of temptation are definitely part of their appeal. the song's charm and passion shine through the murk.

the '87 version has one of barney's best-ever vocals

temptation '98 is alright

my favourite version of all is probably their performance from the 1981 Taras Shevchenko video, where it wasn't even fully hashed-out yet!

Millsner, Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:28 (thirteen years ago)

Maybe you should take a look at your own, then, they're a revelation to say the least. I mean, I've only read a couple of your posts and I've suddenly found myself surprised that amoebas now have internet access. Huh, guess you lot are evolving though, so that's good.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:28 (thirteen years ago)

I think my problem with Temptation is that I knew the remix first, which is dreadful.

5 number ones only ties Ceremony with Dream Attack.

Millsner, Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:31 (thirteen years ago)

Legend says someone tossed a snowball down Bernard's shirt while he was recording the vocals to the original version. 7" and 12" versions are also supposedly meant to be played consecutively since one fades in and the other fades out.

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:31 (thirteen years ago)

not even close, huh

Actually, I haven't! I've heard the original 7" and of course the '87 version on Substance... I'll give the '98 version a try, though. The problem I have with the Substance version is the sequencer line seems to be mixed too low, which is the whole thing that the song is built on!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

LOL thank goodness a dance track. You people are funny.

Kent Burt, Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

"Ceremony" too low shock, etc, etc.

I do like that TPK got the most #1s of all, so there's a little consolation.

I love that after 30 years of breaking down the stigma of dance music in indie culture, this poll ended like some fight between Xgau and Dave Marsh ca. 1982.

Naive Teen Idol, Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:33 (thirteen years ago)

The best way to exorcise the Joy Division ghost was to create a song that made it self up as it went along. It could be two minutes, 10, 46, doesn't matter; it acquires verses and riffs like a rock rolling down a mountain does snow.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:34 (thirteen years ago)

And it's all over! Thanks Bee for the hard work! :D

Who says I was attempting to 'zing' you? Not at all. I just legitimately think you're an amoeba, that's all :) 'Zinging' is for people who spend too much time online. We don't do that in the real world, you see.

originally had round & round at 3 and perfect kiss at 4, decided to flip them and then accidentally left perfect kiss entirely off my ballot even though it was a contender for number one and is almost definitely the new order track i've listened to the most in my life. true faith making it to 3 w/ no number one votes seems weirdly fitting.

Hehehehehe... yeah. The strange thing is, I know a fair few people who, even though they tell me they like Joy Division's music, won't even give New Order a chance because they think their output is limited to songs like 'Blue Monday', 'True Faith' and 'World In Motion'. Oftentimes, and this has surprised me, it seems that many people don't even realise that New Order never actually stopped being a guitar-bass-drums band and did many songs in that configuration.

I recall hearing 'True Faith' far more on the radio or TV here than I ever did with, say, 'Bizarre Love Triangle'. 'Blue Monday' is the track that's had the biggest amount of airplay overall though, I should think!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:46 (thirteen years ago)

Thanks, Bee. I like both dance and indie and robot rock all about the same - but they did it best before 1984!

My tiredness of "True Faith" has nothing to do with radio play. Never heard NO on commercial radio here before "Regret."
