this was my #1

乒乓, Saturday, 1 June 2013 19:28 (thirteen years ago)

I'm gutted because I know that 'Ceremony' is going to place higher than it now, and it really doesn't deserve to.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 19:29 (thirteen years ago)

so there isn't much drama left but we are down to the Top 3 according to ILM.

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 June 2013 19:35 (thirteen years ago)

True Faith, Ceremony and Temptation. Hopefully placing in order of release, Ceremony at 1.

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 1 June 2013 19:37 (thirteen years ago)

Best version is the live one from the video. "Temptation" may take it.

I'll take the jangle-jangle over the throb-throb (brg30), Saturday, 1 June 2013 19:38 (thirteen years ago)

I love this band, their highs and their lows, the valleys and the hills. No other group means as much to me.

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 1 June 2013 19:39 (thirteen years ago)

Despite "The Perfect Kiss" being a fan favourite, the song was not performed live between 1993 and 2006 due to the complexity of converting the programs from the E-mu Emulator to the new Roland synthesizer. However, it returned to the live set at a performance in Athens on 3 June 2006.

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 June 2013 19:41 (thirteen years ago)

another pointless exercise in programming. the appeal of that song totally escapes me. music for robots.

it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Saturday, 1 June 2013 19:43 (thirteen years ago)

BOOOOOOOOOO.

(I joke when I say I'm outta here since I only heard The Perfect Kiss for the first time yesterday, but I've listened to it about twenty times since.)

Theodor Adorbsno (Merdeyeux), Saturday, 1 June 2013 19:46 (thirteen years ago)

I was flabbergasted that TPK only made #4. When I first began drafting these pictures, I had the template with TPK tentatively at #1 :\

Don't get this at all. The enthusiastic, ramshackle element of the band shines through in this song more than many others. Yes, there's a sequencer, but you also have Hooky's bass, the cowbell, hand-played synths, drum pads, guitar...

Millsner, Saturday, 1 June 2013 19:49 (thirteen years ago)

I'm looking at my ballot now, and kinda wishing I'd swapped it with 'True Faith'... :/

3. True Faith
From: Substance
Released: 20 July 1987 (single) and 17 August 1987 (album)
1211 Points, 38 Votes

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 June 2013 19:55 (thirteen years ago)

you read that right 0 number one votes and still managed to get into the Top 3.

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 June 2013 19:56 (thirteen years ago)

That's it, poll over.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 19:56 (thirteen years ago)

I could easily have given it a no.1. It meant the world to me when I was *checks* eleven.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:02 (thirteen years ago)

This is playing out exactly right. As long as Temptation is next.

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:02 (thirteen years ago)

True Faith was the first New Order song I consciously heard (on the American Psycho soundtrack!). It intrigued me enough to get sucked deeper and deeper into their work, but the song has never been a favourite.

Millsner, Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:03 (thirteen years ago)

It's playing out exactly right if you believe that New Order didn't top their first single, which is absolute bollocks.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:03 (thirteen years ago)

I love music for robots. Vivre les robots!

Kent Burt, Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:05 (thirteen years ago)

Apropos: http://www.dewit.ca/archs/jd/Temptation.html

This is the best song ever written, and if anyone disagrees. I'll fight them.

Millsner, Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:05 (thirteen years ago)

Pleased with the top 5, though I'm sick of "True Faith," myself. However the top 2 fall is fine with me.

Kent Burt, Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:06 (thirteen years ago)

New Order wrote and recorded "True Faith" and "1963" during a 10-day studio session with producer Stephen Hague. The two songs were written as new material for New Order's first singles compilation album, Substance 1987. After the two songs were recorded, the band's US management decided that "True Faith" was the stronger track and would be released as the new single, with "1963" as the B-side. "1963" was remixed and issued as a single in its own right in 1994.

"True Faith" was never used as a track on a regular album, though it did appear on most of New Order's "best of" collections (Substance 1987, The Best of New Order, Retro, Singles and International). The first public performance of the song took place at the 1987 Glastonbury Festival; this version appears on the group's BBC Radio 1 Live in Concert album.

The original 7" version of the song did not appear on any album until 2011's "Total from Joy Division to New Order".

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:07 (thirteen years ago)

the big question now. is world in motion going to win this? if temptation is next it will, i guess. but i hope ceremony is next.

You're a bit late for that... that happened when 'Doubts Even Here' came in at #43. "lol".

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:10 (thirteen years ago)

But hello anyway, zappi! You might want to put that bag of Doritos now, get out of those sweatpants and see some sunlight. Kthx. Bai!

There's been a few times over the years that I've thought that I was getting tired of 'True Faith', but really I never seem to. There's been pieces of music I've listened to death over the years where even if I take a break from it and come back to it, it seems to have lost its power through a lot of listens. When I haven't heard 'True Faith' for a while and I find myself listening to it again, it still remains as potent as ever.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:15 (thirteen years ago)

hello Turrican! its funny watching people get upset about nothing on the internet, isn't it!

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:15 (thirteen years ago)

ugh, Temptation beating out TPK and True Faith...

乒乓, Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:15 (thirteen years ago)

I'm just waking up to the horror that World In Motion might actually not make this. If Ceremony shows...

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:15 (thirteen years ago)

'temptation' always seemed to me the one that was most likely to the favorite of indie kids who liked dance music but didn't like dance music that much

乒乓, Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:17 (thirteen years ago)

True Faith, Silent Morning, The Promise and Pure Energy were in constant rotation and probably my favorite era of Pop radio in the States.

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:18 (thirteen years ago)

like, temptation was still raw enough in the margins that you wouldn't be betraying your indie ideals

It's not so much upset, it's called passion, and if you have none then you're on the wrong forum. Likewise, if this is how you get your kicks then I guess it's not so bad if 'Ceremony' isn't #1 after all... I mean, no matter what places and where it places, I clearly don't have a life as colossally empty as yours seems to be :) Dark in that basement, is it?

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:19 (thirteen years ago)

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:19 (thirteen years ago)

Easy fellas, no need to play out a Barney vs Hooky scenario in this thread.

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:20 (thirteen years ago)

Turrican's sloppy typos perfectly in keeping w/this poll at any rate

Yeah... I think this is ultimately one of the problems that I have with 'Temptation'. I like it, and I think the chorus is catchy as all hell, yet I'm not totally convinced they recorded a really great version of it. Where they seemed to nail a lot of other tracks in the studio, I don't think they got the best out of this one whenever they came to record it. I'm sure if it had been produced in a Technique kind of way, I would love it without any reservations.

other people's projections tend to give away more themselves than they realize. it's fascinating!

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:25 (thirteen years ago)

Did you hear the version they rerecorded in 98? Think it was 98, anyway, it's quite good and may fit your tastes.

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:26 (thirteen years ago)

the idiosyncratic production (to put it generously) on the original 7"/12" of temptation are definitely part of their appeal. the song's charm and passion shine through the murk.

the '87 version has one of barney's best-ever vocals

temptation '98 is alright

my favourite version of all is probably their performance from the 1981 Taras Shevchenko video, where it wasn't even fully hashed-out yet!

Maybe you should take a look at your own, then, they're a revelation to say the least. I mean, I've only read a couple of your posts and I've suddenly found myself surprised that amoebas now have internet access. Huh, guess you lot are evolving though, so that's good.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:28 (thirteen years ago)

I think my problem with Temptation is that I knew the remix first, which is dreadful.

Naive Teen Idol, Saturday, 1 June 2013 20:29 (thirteen years ago)

Is that the song where he gets shocked by the mic?
