Unrelated to New Order post: I've got 'Some Distant Memory' on from the first Electronic album and I swear, that outro... when it crops up I always feel like the clouds in my mind are parting to reveal the most perfect blue sky imaginable, with the most intense sunlight bursting through... it's so beautiful it makes me want to weep oceans, man.

why I love ILM

I love how it packs so many odd sounds in four minutes

as I said I know so little New Order or the kind of received opinions about them, so this may be very banal or very wrong, but I enjoy how for such a massively successful band there seems to be a kind of earnest, enthusiastic amateurishness to them, from Sumner's singing and lyrical clunkers to the way they throw so much into some songs (e.g. the frog noises in 'The Perfect Kiss', hey sure why not).

'Your Silent Face'... ah, this makes me feel somewhat a different way... it's quite personal, this, but whatever: about three years ago my grandfather passed away after a long struggle with various illnesses... On the day of the funeral, I was taken into the room where his body was in the coffin... there was just me, me father and my mother there, in this room... and as anyone who has seen a dead relative will know, there's this curiously odd feeling... you're looking at a person that you once knew, but that person isn't there anymore. The shell is there, but the person that occupied that shell... well, they're somewhere else. Naturally, I burst into tears. Another relative of mine burst into the room while I was grieving, and I felt incredibly angry that he'd just burst in there without knocking or anything... I just found it a bit inconsiderate. This song... reminds me of that.

So yeah, I mean... this is probably not what Bernard Sumner had in mind while he was writing his lyrics... but yeah, this song means a hell of a lot to me.

Yeah, for a lot of New Order fans, the sloppiness is actually part of the charm... I like it when they balance the "earnest, enthusiastic amateurishness" with a decent production job, though! But it is quite OTM, that... maybe the "enthusiastic amateurishness" makes the music feel quite breezy as opposed to laboured.

'Thieves Like Us' is Jason Donovan's favourite song of all time. i wish i could find the picture of him solemnly holding up the sleeve of Substance in Smash Hits circa 87.

'Age Of Consent', to me, is the typical New Order track on a musical level... I guess it's because of the i-iv chord progression, which is a staple of loads of New Order songs. It's always amazed me how often they've got away with using two chords in their songs, but yet doing so much with them.

VERY surprised that 'Bizarre Love Triangle' didn't make Top 5, actually! I love this song, one of New Order's most perfect disco-oriented tracks that offer the perfect alternative to the more introspective likes of 'Your Silent Face' and 'Doubts Even Here'. The fact that it's placed outside of the Top 5 is a testament to the behaviour of the voters here at ILM. I'm intrigued now as to what's going to come up next, now... Please, do go on!

I don't think the chords change throughout the whole song, but they still manage to find a way through skillful arranging to make that chorus just burst in like it's on another level to the rest of the track. It's as perfect to listen to late at night on the headphones as it is soundtracking the nightlife. In fact, if I ever want a quick release of pure unadulterated joy, this is the track I reach for. It's so electric it has me saying "yes"!

I don't get the appeal of wanting to hear BLT in a "real" acoustic version.

If the latter, there's almost a faux-classical flourish to them -- they're kind of not played evenly and on a somewhat cheap sounding keyboard.

I meant the arpeggios, but the staccato keyboard part before the arpeggios come in lays the groundwork for those arpeggios perfectly. I agree with you, it's a perfect New Order moment, and one of their finest singles.
