Dunno if Dan will agree bit Bernard's singing and lyrics here arw the clearest precursors to Electronic.

The Technique album and the first Electronic album feature Bernard's best singing, IMO. Probably his songwriting peak, too.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:02 (thirteen years ago)

xp That is exactly how I feel about Ceremony.

Millsner, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:03 (thirteen years ago)

In fact, it's a bit of a shame that we weren't able to include Electronic tracks in this poll, because I could see the likes of 'Tighten Up', 'Getting Away With It', 'Get The Message' and 'Gangster' coming in really high. But then again, if you included Electronic, you'd have to include The Other Two, Revenge, Monaco, Bad Lieutenant... and of course Joy Division, which would spoil this fucking poll entirely.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:04 (thirteen years ago)

xpost I'd agree with that. The first Electronic album is perfect.

I'm surprised to see Dream Attack place higher than Vanishing Point.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:05 (thirteen years ago)

Procession still leading with the most number one votes, but I guess that others will pile on from here on out. Something like 3/4 of total #1 votes have not yet appeared, assuming 40-odd ballots.

Millsner, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:05 (thirteen years ago)

I can understand that about Ceremony but I adore everything NO did afterwards and I still placed it very high.

kraudive, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:06 (thirteen years ago)

Ceremony means a lot to me and I haven't really listened to Joy Division after I was 21.

kraudive, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:07 (thirteen years ago)

But "Ceremony" IS the best song they every recorded and their career peaked by 1983.

I still love later stuff, but 1981-1983 is pretty much my favourite run by any band ever.

Kent Burt, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:07 (thirteen years ago)

I'm expecting to see some MAJOR spikes in votes from hereon.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:08 (thirteen years ago)

their 1981-1983 run is incredible, but saying that they peaked by that time is a bit ridiculous. Just look at the poll results!

Millsner, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:10 (thirteen years ago)

Yes, the poll results are mostly disappointing.

If the 1981-1983 stuff was the only stuff that New Order had ever recorded, it's fair to say that I would have a completely different view of this band.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:12 (thirteen years ago)

I think I'm definitely more of a fan of late 80's New Order on the whole. I don't rate Movement that highly and I voted for Ceremony but pretty low on my list.

How far are we counting down today?

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:12 (thirteen years ago)

should we finish?

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:14 (thirteen years ago)

ALL THE WAY

Millsner, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:14 (thirteen years ago)

Yes!!

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:14 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, go with it! truly an amazing list btw. great job everyone

g simmel, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:16 (thirteen years ago)

New Order wanted to release "Vanishing Point" as a single, Tony Wilson went behind their backs and released "Round & Round" instead. Based on this poll New Order were right.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:19 (thirteen years ago)

and thus concludes the porno dialogue section of the New Order poll, now where were we?

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:19 (thirteen years ago)

and true to life, it was over sooner than you think

I'll show myself out

Meh, I can't help but disagree... I love 'Vanishing Point' to bits, as I do every single track on Technique, but if I was asked which one I preferred with a gun held to my head I'd scream out 'Round & Round' in an instant.

10. Dream Attack
From: Technique
Released: 30 January 1989
852 Points, 28 Votes, 5 Number Ones

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:25 (thirteen years ago)

Weird how it appears on the '95 comp, as if to say "nuts to you, Tony."

FIVE NUMBER ONES!!!

I never knew that. Vanishing Point is the better song but not sure if it would have worked better as a single. They would have probably had to do a radio edit and that song is just perfect as it is.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:25 (thirteen years ago)

I've never been in the kind of relationship in which I can look at my beloved the next morning and feel what the singer in "Dream Attack" feels -- that kind of stunned rapture

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:26 (thirteen years ago)

now this, i don't get. probably one of least favourite tracks on technique. oh well.

crabby pate (electricsound), Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:26 (thirteen years ago)

also i need to brush up on my calculation skills

crabby pate (electricsound), Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:26 (thirteen years ago)

Dream Attack is my favorite song of all time.

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:28 (thirteen years ago)

aww

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:29 (thirteen years ago)

'Dream Attack' is fucking great. Not just for it's chorus ("I can't be owned by no one..." etc.) ... but the blissful outro, which ends both song and album so damn perfectly. There's moments throughout Technique which have me feeling that I'm listening to one of the best albums that's ever been made, and that outro is one of them.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:29 (thirteen years ago)

best line of all-time:

Nothing in this world can touch the music that I heard
When I woke up this morning

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:30 (thirteen years ago)

It's the perfect morning after song! "You brought the sun into my life...I CAN'T BE OWNED BY NO ONE"

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:31 (thirteen years ago)

Millsner - gotta say one more time. These pics are beautiful. Thank you. Great poll - to you too Bee OK.

I'm struggling. It's 2.30 am in the UK. Gonna crash soon but you guys go for it.

I have at least once. It's a feeling that lasts for mere seconds, but New Order manage to crystallise those mere seconds into a 5 minute song... and that's part of its genius, I guess.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:31 (thirteen years ago)

that's why they matter. I can imagine what it's like.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:32 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah Dream Attack is perfect, their best album closer.

2:30am it may be, but I'm here 'til the bitter end! Besides, it's Saturday now... what could possibly go wrong!? :D

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:32 (thirteen years ago)

Wonder how many non-singles are left?

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:34 (thirteen years ago)

Probably just Your Silent Face and Age of Consent now.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:35 (thirteen years ago)

In fact, all throughout Technique I end up getting this fucking real giddy life-affirming feeling... like I'm massively in love or E'd up to the eyeballs, or something. No other New Order album does that for me, and it's a huge part of Technique's appeal for me.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:35 (thirteen years ago)

Blows my mind that every single track from Technique managed to place (and quite well!)

Millsner, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:36 (thirteen years ago)

Damn. True Faith came up on my Spotify - "I feel so extraordinary" so I made a martini.

kraudive, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:36 (thirteen years ago)

any expectations for World in Motion?

Millsner, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:37 (thirteen years ago)

The kind of double-negative in "I can't be owned by no one" feels wrong when coming from a British singer. Same with "just can't function no more" in LWTUA.

I find the love for Technique as puzzling as some of you find my love for Movement. I like it, but it doesn't move me like the early stuff, and somehow feels more dated today than the records that came before it.

Kent Burt, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:39 (thirteen years ago)

I've just thrown Technique on and I'm doing my best Bernard-dancing-like-a-bell-end-on-Top-Of-The-Pops routine :)

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:40 (thirteen years ago)

Technique:

9 Dream Attack
10 Vanishing Point
18 All The Way
19 Round & Round
21 Fine Time
23 Run
32 Mr Disco
39 Love Less
41 Guilty Partner

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:40 (thirteen years ago)

Technique is my second favourite album of all time. I've been listening to it a bunch for this poll and falling in love with it all over again. I didn't vote for every song but if I'd had another five spots I probably would have done. I wouldn't change a single thing on that album.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 1 June 2013 01:40 (thirteen years ago)

Technique's day-glo production -- the first time their self-productions sounded expensive -- suits the sleeve and mood.
