I made my mom listen to Love Vigilantes when I got the Low Life tape from the library and she liked it.

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Friday, 31 May 2013 23:19 (thirteen years ago)

Another perfect song that didn't even make my top ten. Love the lyrics so much. I saw them at Glastonbury 2005 and they played this, I was chuffed.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 31 May 2013 23:20 (thirteen years ago)

Ah yes, 'Love Vigilantes'... great track... a song that I have a lot of time for, a recording that most certainly could have been a lot better (although I guess I could say the same for a lot of New Order's stuff). If only Melodyne had existed in 1985...

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 31 May 2013 23:20 (thirteen years ago)

There are days when this is my favourite song, ever.

Millsner, Friday, 31 May 2013 23:21 (thirteen years ago)

agreed, this list is sick.

Bee OK, Friday, 31 May 2013 23:22 (thirteen years ago)

I'm refreshing this page every few seconds now. I'm fairly sure I voted for everything that is yet to place so no complaints really, I just hope Regret made the top ten.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 31 May 2013 23:25 (thirteen years ago)

Never "got" this one. I've always thought "Love Vigilantes" was just added at the last minute filler because there wasn't enough songs for Lowlife. My #40.

I'll take the jangle-jangle over the throb-throb (brg30), Friday, 31 May 2013 23:26 (thirteen years ago)

But it's so much more "written" than 2/3 of NO songs -- it has a story, ffs. Can't be tossed off IMO.

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Friday, 31 May 2013 23:27 (thirteen years ago)

slightly suspect lyrics on LV, or genius? It's always difficult to tell with Barney. Great song though.

kraudive, Friday, 31 May 2013 23:28 (thirteen years ago)

Oh there goes my number1..

Mark G, Friday, 31 May 2013 23:28 (thirteen years ago)

has a theory ever been forwarded that 'low-life' is a concept album told from the perspective of the spectral 'love vigilantes' narrator? because I am totally doing it now.

Millsner, Friday, 31 May 2013 23:28 (thirteen years ago)

one of the most memorable non-dub melodica licks of all time

ttyih boi (crüt), Friday, 31 May 2013 23:29 (thirteen years ago)

Love Vigilantes is fhe first track I heard after Electronic that astonished me. The guitar-melodica-bass combo seduced me.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 31 May 2013 23:29 (thirteen years ago)

IMO you can't get past "I want see, my family.." lovely stuff

kraudive, Friday, 31 May 2013 23:29 (thirteen years ago)

So, was he mistakenly reported dead? Or is he actually gone and its his ghost that goes home to his wife?

Who can say...

Mark G, Friday, 31 May 2013 23:29 (thirteen years ago)

melodica is v underrated as a non-dub non-twee pop instrument

crabby pate (electricsound), Friday, 31 May 2013 23:30 (thirteen years ago)

I like the idea that he doesn't know he's dead. impossible to tell, really.

Millsner, Friday, 31 May 2013 23:30 (thirteen years ago)

should have been a single. they only released two from Low-Life so this would have made for a great third single.

Bee OK, Friday, 31 May 2013 23:31 (thirteen years ago)

I remember buying Low Life, and wondering how it would be after the generally open-ended songs that was Power, Corruption and Lies..

And there was the most direct song they'd done so far. Ended up playing it three times in a row, most of the rest of the album is a blur, really.

Mark G, Friday, 31 May 2013 23:32 (thirteen years ago)

Always a well known album track; my college station played it like crazy

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 31 May 2013 23:33 (thirteen years ago)

I'm guessing 'Sooner Than You Think' and 'This Time of Night' won't place now - I had both in my top 20.

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 31 May 2013 23:37 (thirteen years ago)

Speaking of which, did anything in particular prompt a change to their (implicit) "singles and albums shan't have overlapping tracks" stance at Lowlife?

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Friday, 31 May 2013 23:37 (thirteen years ago)

xp Surprised & a little heartbroken at their exclusion so far.

Millsner, Friday, 31 May 2013 23:38 (thirteen years ago)

I'm guessing there are 9 incredible, godforesake me, world beating singles left - a couple of Technique tunes that will place here - and...

kraudive, Friday, 31 May 2013 23:40 (thirteen years ago)

i really liked this picture. have never seen Pumped Full of Drugs.

Bee OK, Friday, 31 May 2013 23:42 (thirteen years ago)

i'm certain of what's left, but couldn't begin to guess at the order

"1963" received just 4 more points than "Love Vigilantes." LV had 34 votes compared to 1963's 30 votes.

Another B-side and an awesome Bobby Gillespie collaboration would be my guesses.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 31 May 2013 23:50 (thirteen years ago)

One of the greatest B-sides of all time.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 31 May 2013 23:51 (thirteen years ago)

I'm kind of surprised this is so low, but it's about right. Wonderful song - one of the first of theirs I fell for.

xp - this is the b-side? I counted it as a single - it was later, right? At least in UK.

kraudive, Friday, 31 May 2013 23:53 (thirteen years ago)

Almost had this as my #1 but changed my mind at the last minute.

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 31 May 2013 23:53 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah the '94 remix was released as a single to promote the Best of (xp).

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 31 May 2013 23:54 (thirteen years ago)

It was released with the Arthur Baker remix as a single, yes. There are a few different versions, complicating things as usual.

Millsner, Friday, 31 May 2013 23:57 (thirteen years ago)

'Your Silent Face' to come, I reckon.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 31 May 2013 23:59 (thirteen years ago)

Oh yeah I somehow forgot it was a single. One of the best songs that was a B-side and then later made a single then. Pet Shop's Paninaro is the only example I can think of that happening.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 1 June 2013 00:02 (thirteen years ago)

'Your Silent Face' to come, I reckon.

― The Jupiter 8 (Turrican),

Age of Consent too.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 1 June 2013 00:03 (thirteen years ago)

and "Dream Attack"

I'll take the jangle-jangle over the throb-throb (brg30), Saturday, 1 June 2013 00:03 (thirteen years ago)

this made my Top 10 but they made the right choice by picking "True Faith" as the single.

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 June 2013 00:04 (thirteen years ago)

folks talking about the Love Vigilante lyrics should read this:

"Love Vigilantes" just came on the sound system at the coffee shop I'm at! LOL

I'll take the jangle-jangle over the throb-throb (brg30), Saturday, 1 June 2013 00:11 (thirteen years ago)

This is too low. I couldn't really say which was my number 1 or number 2 - this I placed at 2. Damn.

C'mon ILX, this is Everything's Gone Green. Uh. I love it so much.

kraudive, Saturday, 1 June 2013 00:13 (thirteen years ago)

Great pic though.

kraudive, Saturday, 1 June 2013 00:13 (thirteen years ago)

blows my mind that this was a b-side, though they corrected that a few months later.

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 June 2013 00:17 (thirteen years ago)

Number 2 for me as well! There are some great live versions of this.

Culture Cub (I am using your worlds), Saturday, 1 June 2013 00:20 (thirteen years ago)

EGG is completely brilliant, probably my favourite sounding song of theirs, it's just so impressive in so many ways

crabby pate (electricsound), Saturday, 1 June 2013 00:22 (thirteen years ago)

of course this had to come next:
