No way. Run and Run 2 should be counted together, IMO. Looked for this 12" for years and when I finally broke down and bought one on Discogs, I ended up finding 2 locally the same week.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 31 May 2013 19:39 (thirteen years ago)

Somehow lucked into a copy of the 7" as well. If you're a fan of this song you should seek out the demo/mix collection online. There's an instrumental version that rules.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 31 May 2013 19:40 (thirteen years ago)

"81/82 EP is the single best New Order disc, record, artifact."

Yup. Got it at a record fair shortly after release, nothing was ever the same.

Three Word Username, Friday, 31 May 2013 19:41 (thirteen years ago)

'Run' was one of only two songs off Technique that I didn't vote for.

Still a great track though.

Austin, Friday, 31 May 2013 19:41 (thirteen years ago)

I'm a lover of 'Shellshock' and proud... it just has one of those choruses that appears in my head just out of nowhere and I'm all like "yup, I must listen to that immediately". The only criticism I can level at 'Shellshock' is that perhaps its production treatment hasn't aged as well as a lot of other '80s New Order tracks.

I probably rated this higher than it deserves because this was the first song (on Substance) by NO that really clicked with me. Agreed about the production -- tho I have a soft spot for John Robie. Chorus is all-time, however.

YES!

what an amazing song.

are people familiar with the Pump Panel Reconstruction Mix used in the first club scene in "Blade"? because that owns

(also for whatever reason the "Confusion" 12 " mix on Spotify won't play for me)

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Friday, 31 May 2013 20:00 (thirteen years ago)

The '87 version is alright, too, in its sloppy Brotherhood way.

Millsner, Friday, 31 May 2013 20:03 (thirteen years ago)

There's only one more spot for Regret to take without breaching the top 20. Will ILM be burned to the ground or not? I guess we'll know soon.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 31 May 2013 20:05 (thirteen years ago)

Another instance of the alternate versions being better than the 'Substance' version. The Rough Mix is my fav but the 2002 Koma and Bones mixes were great too.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 31 May 2013 20:06 (thirteen years ago)

trying & failing to find the clp on Youtube where Baker is behind the mixing desk & explaining who did what on Confusion - "I brought the Funhouse handclaps" *pushes up the fader* etc

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 31 May 2013 20:08 (thirteen years ago)

I do like the Substance version but I do prefer pretty much every other version of "Confusion" that I've heard more

It's alright, but better than 'Doubts Even Here'!? (I feel this is going to be a recurring thing throughout the remainder of this poll).

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 31 May 2013 20:12 (thirteen years ago)

"they brought the melody and i brought the beat", should be edited to say "and I recycled a beat I used with Freez just a bit earlier in the year".

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 31 May 2013 20:15 (thirteen years ago)

Hearing the original "Confusion" ten years (!) After the Substance one was revelatory. I prefer it to Blue Monday, in part because the "Confusion" sound ruled Miami radio for years i.e freestyle.

Outside of my top five or six, ranking was nearly impossible.

FYI I ended up sticking the 12" instrumental on the playlist because it's awesome

I also left the Pump Panel remix because it's also awesome

This song is both ridiculous and awesome.

Top 20

Bee OK, Friday, 31 May 2013 20:27 (thirteen years ago)

Haaated this song the first time I heard it. I remembering being incredibly put off that there was no real chorus, found the synths repetitive and annoying. Now, #13 on my ballot.

Vinnie, Friday, 31 May 2013 20:27 (thirteen years ago)

I'm about to turn into a reunion pumpkin so someone else should take over updating the Spotify playlist, which I will repost here so ppl don't have to search the thread:

Fine Time graphic is so perfect. Looks like the pattern of a soccerball and the colors from the actual single. Nicely done.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 31 May 2013 20:34 (thirteen years ago)

Best song on Technique!

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Friday, 31 May 2013 20:38 (thirteen years ago)

lyrics are a problem for All Day Long imo. My 29, but I think of them as Barney at his clumsiest, and they're both serious and front-and-centre. They get in the way for me.

Yes, exactly. Very similar problem with "1963" for me. Despite this, these were my favourite NO songs upon getting on the wagon in 1986-87. Before hearing the rest of the catalogue it even gave the band a 'guilty pleasure' status for a while, in my juvenile mind. But pleased to see "ADL" this high. Another one where I hadn't the foggiest idea if anyone else rated it.

Great idea! What would the categories be!?

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 31 May 2013 21:27 (thirteen years ago)

Yay! My highest placed deep cut, IIRC. The guitar intro alone just about makes me weep.

didn't make my list but what a great closing for Power Corruption & Lies.

Bee OK, Friday, 31 May 2013 21:28 (thirteen years ago)

leave me alone is great because it's really easy to hear how it comes together in the beginning
i love their singsongy melodies -- is there a word for that?

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Friday, 31 May 2013 21:33 (thirteen years ago)

would totally play new order trivial pursuit

19. Round & Round
From: Technique
Released: 27 February 1989 (single) and 30 January 1989 (album)

Bee OK, Friday, 31 May 2013 21:45 (thirteen years ago)

The band recorded three versions:

The album version (4:29), which appears on Technique, emphasises drums and bass for a hard dance feel. It concludes with a cold ending in which the sequencers are run through phasers before then cutting out abruptly.

The 7" version (3:59) co-produced with Stephen Hague emphasizes the melody, synth pads, and vocals. It has a similar structure to the album track but replaces the instrumental break with a repeat of the intro, and fades out in conclusion. This is the version used in the video. Sumner remarked in a radio interview with Terry Christian on Key 103 that he was not fond of the plethora of "Round & Round" remixes and named the 'Stephen Hague Radio-Remix' as his favourite.

The 12" version (6:50) has a 2:45 intro sequence and stops cold before proceeding much as in the 7". It has a wash of synthesizers and a keyboard solo midway through the song. Also, the line "It makes me act like a child" repeats several times as the song ends. instead of fading out like the seven inch version, it ends in a manner closer to the original album version though less discordant.

Bee OK, Friday, 31 May 2013 21:47 (thirteen years ago)

when I discovered "Round and Round" in high school it was at the same moment I read Dorian Gray for the first time.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 31 May 2013 21:49 (thirteen years ago)

Argh, this is way too low. The ending on the album version is king!

this was also the time when friends started making fun of New Order's easy presets i.e. the ending
