I'm sure i'm influenced by what i've read about their situation at the time but it sounds like a group of people overcome with inspiration, grief and fear. It took a while for me to really love I'm glad I stuck with it. Nothing else really sounds like it. Can you imagine if it had included Ceremony, In A Lonely Place and Procession?

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 31 May 2013 18:24 (thirteen years ago)

Turrican otm. It's the singular sound that drew me to it.

no matter where this one was going to place it was going to be too low. a song that just makes me get up and dance. will put a smile on my face every single time. should have been a single.

my #9

Bee OK, Friday, 31 May 2013 18:29 (thirteen years ago)

haha this song is so great

there are seeds of the stuff I complain about in "Face Up" there but all of the components are working together instead of against each other; also Bernard doesn't sound like he's passing a kidney stone

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Friday, 31 May 2013 18:30 (thirteen years ago)

I wasn't always into this, but it's one of the most joyous things they've ever recorded.

Millsner, Friday, 31 May 2013 18:30 (thirteen years ago)

I absolutely love 'The Village', one of those New Order songs that fills me with so much joy I just wanna shake my arse, throw my arms wide and thank whatever forces are up there that music even exists. It's a thousand sunny days packed into under 5 minutes (or a lot of E, if you're that way inclined).

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 31 May 2013 18:36 (thirteen years ago)

New Order really know their way around a 7-or-8-minute song. Temptation, Perfect Kiss, Thieves Like Us... I love how they just keep unfolding and unfolding until you're just surrounded by them.

toooooooooooooooootally

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Friday, 31 May 2013 18:46 (thirteen years ago)

it received 492 points, will get that corrected.

Bee OK, Friday, 31 May 2013 18:47 (thirteen years ago)

It's the little things with this band that always get me: The "funk" guitar skittering throughout Chosen Time; the syncopated bass synth line that jumps an octave right at the end of The Village.

righteousmaelstrom, Friday, 31 May 2013 18:49 (thirteen years ago)

sorry that was a massive XP -
i think i came around to the idea of a long immersive song through NO tbh!
had never heard anything like that before, and theirs go down so easy

Bee OK, Friday, 31 May 2013 18:52 (thirteen years ago)

such a beautiful song

Bee OK, Friday, 31 May 2013 18:54 (thirteen years ago)

their greatest b-side?

Millsner, Friday, 31 May 2013 18:55 (thirteen years ago)

I like "Procession" and "1963" more but "Lonesome Tonight" is great

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Friday, 31 May 2013 18:56 (thirteen years ago)

procession had its own release, but I forgot about 1963. wasn't there a story that it was originally intended to be the A-side w/True Faith?

Millsner, Friday, 31 May 2013 18:58 (thirteen years ago)

Procession is an A-side, technically. 8 different sleeve variations!

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 31 May 2013 18:58 (thirteen years ago)

Yes, the Sound on Sound interview with the producer mentioned they weren't sure what would be the A-side until the very last moment.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 31 May 2013 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

"Lonesome Tonight" sounds like New Order and The Cure listening to each other and calling pax.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 31 May 2013 19:04 (thirteen years ago)

I just listened to lonesome tonight for the first time. it was awesome.

for this being such a big song, i'm surprised at the placing. i really thought that this one was going to be much higher.

Bee OK, Friday, 31 May 2013 19:17 (thirteen years ago)

Dan rigged the results to endure the album version took most of the hits

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 31 May 2013 19:18 (thirteen years ago)

Record Mirror mix of this is the ultimate version. It's also one of the 3 Razormaid mixes but I can never remember which one.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 31 May 2013 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

this has got to be one of their most fan-dividing songs, no?

Millsner, Friday, 31 May 2013 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

I just put the single version on the playlist ^_^

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Friday, 31 May 2013 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

also album version 4 life

Millsner, Friday, 31 May 2013 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

one of my favorite pieces of doggerel ever: "A view without a room/unveils the truth so soon"

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 31 May 2013 19:20 (thirteen years ago)

Lonesome Tonight far too low - also the first song i ever learned on bass, its really easy!

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 31 May 2013 19:21 (thirteen years ago)

I honestly don't understand how ppl can dislike the backing vocals on the single version

The whole thing is basically joy distilled into a knife

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Friday, 31 May 2013 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

I was seriously tempted to use the sad keanu pic for this song

Millsner, Friday, 31 May 2013 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

I do actually like the menacing march that the album version builds into, it's just a shame about what happens before that point

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Friday, 31 May 2013 19:24 (thirteen years ago)

Bernard wouldn't be above writing "I've joy distilled into a knife/I knew that you would be my wife."

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 31 May 2013 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

"/goodbye city life"

I can't stop focussing on what sounds like an out of time bass sequencer when I hear the 12" version.

23. Run
From: Technique
Released: 28 August 1989 (single) and 30 January 1989 (album)
573 Points, 26 Votes
*Run 2 was taken out and listed as a separate song: 80 Points, 4 Votes (if added it would jump two spots to number 21 with 653 points.)

Bee OK, Friday, 31 May 2013 19:35 (thirteen years ago)

That sounds to me to be very intentionally on the offbeat to add a more dynamic rhythmical sense to the song; the bass line makes the 12" version gallop and the album version is very lumpen and stolid in comparison.

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Friday, 31 May 2013 19:36 (thirteen years ago)

man, I used to really hate "Run" and then one day it just CLICKED

still didn't vote for it though

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Friday, 31 May 2013 19:37 (thirteen years ago)

(part of my issue is that it doesn't feel like the song starts lyrically until the second verse)

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Friday, 31 May 2013 19:37 (thirteen years ago)

"Run 2" was remixed by Scott Litt from the version on Technique, hence the appendage of "2" to the title. The main difference is that the song has been made more radio-friendly by editing down most of the long instrumental run-out and appending it with a final repeat of the chorus. Litt's mix strips back much of the echo and layers of synthesizers, and in place centres the mix on Sumner's vocal and the bass guitar of Peter Hook. Despite the effort taken to produce a radio single, only 20,000 of the Factory 12" release were ever pressed. 500 7-inch records were also pressed, for promotional use. The single was only released in the UK.

Bee OK, Friday, 31 May 2013 19:39 (thirteen years ago)

No way. Run and Run 2 should be counted together, IMO. Looked for this 12" for years and when I finally broke down and bought one on Discogs, I ended up finding 2 locally the same week.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 31 May 2013 19:39 (thirteen years ago)

Somehow lucked into a copy of the 7" as well. If you're a fan of this song you should seek out the demo/mix collection online. There's an instrumental version that rules.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 31 May 2013 19:40 (thirteen years ago)

"81/82 EP is the single best New Order disc, record, artifact."

Yup. Got it at a record fair shortly after release, nothing was ever the same.

Three Word Username, Friday, 31 May 2013 19:41 (thirteen years ago)

'Run' was one of only two songs off Technique that I didn't vote for.

Still a great track though.

Austin, Friday, 31 May 2013 19:41 (thirteen years ago)

I'm a lover of 'Shellshock' and proud... it just has one of those choruses that appears in my head just out of nowhere and I'm all like "yup, I must listen to that immediately". The only criticism I can level at 'Shellshock' is that perhaps its production treatment hasn't aged as well as a lot of other '80s New Order tracks.

I probably rated this higher than it deserves because this was the first song (on Substance) by NO that really clicked with me. Agreed about the production -- tho I have a soft spot for John Robie. Chorus is all-time, however.

what an amazing song.

are people familiar with the Pump Panel Reconstruction Mix used in the first club scene in "Blade"? because that owns

(also for whatever reason the "Confusion" 12 " mix on Spotify won't play for me)

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Friday, 31 May 2013 20:00 (thirteen years ago)

The '87 version is alright, too, in its sloppy Brotherhood way.

Millsner, Friday, 31 May 2013 20:03 (thirteen years ago)

There's only one more spot for Regret to take without breaching the top 20. Will ILM be burned to the ground or not? I guess we'll know soon.
