seems really low though maybe we're getting to the point where it's just crazy loaded from here outthis is OTM
what i have realized is that New Order is one of rocks best bands, period.
― Bee OK, Thursday, May 30, 2013 10:53 PM (Yesterday) I'm gonna ask the same question I used to ask myself while listening to/dancing to NO songs as an adolescent:Why can't I find any more bands as good as New Order?
Which reminds me that anyone who cares should try to find the Afghan Whigs version of Regret. I think it sounds really good on them, a really different band. I think I have it on a CD somewhere, but haven't listened to it in years. At the beginning there's this stupid stage banter and lol Dulli is like "who wants a New Order song?" and then goes on and on lamenting that not enough people still like new order.
i'm lamenting that i have never seen them live. would i still enjoy it? i go to shows all the time, but not bands of their stature.

New Order live? They're pretty good these days, but it's def. nostalgia filling in the gaps.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 31 May 2013 13:24 (thirteen years ago)
I saw Peter Hook doing Movement karaoke with a very capable band recently, which I must admit I enjoyed rather guiltily. His voice suited the material well to begin with but by the end of the show he sounded flat as a pancake. I imagine the current incarnation of NO would do a good job though.

there it is! the banter is INTERMINABLE but it's worth it to hear him say "i LOVE new order" and the song is obvs good
it's def. nostalgia filling in the gaps.whose nostalgia, is what i wonder
― free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Friday, 31 May 2013 13:27 (thirteen years ago)
Barney in particularly seems almost medically happy these days, super well adjusted. I'm not sure he's nostalgic so much as just happy to make people happy. The fans ... it's a mix of old-person (me) nostalgia and people who have no idea who the band is and what they mean but are just happy to be there.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 31 May 2013 13:31 (thirteen years ago)
Those book prints are gorgeous. Surely the Disintegration one has DJP's name written all over it.

people who have no idea who the band is and what they mean but are just happy to be there.ha! i know those crowds, but i can't imagine one for new order!that's kind of a bummer but as long as everyone is having fun, no harm done right?
― free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Friday, 31 May 2013 13:41 (thirteen years ago)
I saw them in Manchester 11 or 12 years ago with Hooky on board, it was a good mix of "I was there in '81" die-hards and younger people like me.

Sumner's reticence about his life is his most attractive quality, and that British trait shines through his voice and lyrics: beneath the boilerplate lies the truth.

― Culture Cub (I am using your worlds), Friday, 31 May 2013 17:03 (thirteen years ago)
I love that New Order could throw away songs this great as a non album b side
― Culture Cub (I am using your worlds), Friday, 31 May 2013 17:04 (thirteen years ago)
New Order really know their way around a 7-or-8-minute song. Temptation, Perfect Kiss, Thieves Like Us... I love how they just keep unfolding and unfolding until you're just surrounded by them. Hurt is one of these. Is the extra minute of song on the 1981-1982 EP a result of being on vinyl or is it actually different from the 7-minute Substance version?
― the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Friday, 31 May 2013 17:09 (thirteen years ago)
yeah crackin poll so far. can't believe that i'd never heard Mesh, amazing track.

81/82 EP is the single best New Order disc, record, artifact.

first song to show up in the Top 50 that has a number one vote.
Is the extra minute of song on the 1981-1982 EP a result of being on vinyl or is it actually different from the 7-minute Substance version?
It's slightly extended from the Substance version, gaining a longer breakdown near the middle, iirc.
adore the slamming-door snare sound on this
― Millsner, Friday, 31 May 2013 17:22 (thirteen years ago)
No idea why All Day Long isn't more universally loved. It has all the elements of a classic New Order track. Suppose not being a single hurt and maybe the subject matter is a bit awkward to really get behind but it's one of my favorites. The electro beat sounds incredible turned up SUPER LOUD.
― brotherlovesdub, Friday, 31 May 2013 17:28 (thirteen years ago)
Damn this is a beautiful song
― Deafening silence (DL), Friday, 31 May 2013 17:30 (thirteen years ago)
it's an excellent driving song
― A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 31 May 2013 17:40 (thirteen years ago)
'All Day Long' is undoubtedly one of my favourites... numerous reasons why this track tends to get overlooked: being buried away on Side Two of Brotherhood (quite possibly their weakest album of the '80s), not being aired very much live in comparison to other "beautiful" New Order tracks like 'Your Silent Face', not being a single.
Simply put, to me this is one of the most beautiful moments in the New Order back catalogue... those gorgeous keyboards throughout, and it kicks seven sorts of shit out of any other track on Brotherhood that isn't 'Bizarre Love Triangle'. Still feel it's a touch too low, though... alongside 'Doubts Even Here', this is one of my big big New Order favourites.
― The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 31 May 2013 17:41 (thirteen years ago)
Movement is their weakest eighties album.
"All Day Long" and "Angel Dust" pair well, don't they? The latter sounds like an early incarnation of the disco metal they perfected on "Touched..."

28. ShellshockFrom: Pretty In Pink soundtrackReleased: March 1986472 Points, 22 Votes
― Bee OK, Friday, 31 May 2013 17:45 (thirteen years ago)
The 12" boasts an extended remix of the song running nearly ten minutes, arguably New Order's longest recording behind the original cut of "Elegia". For the release of the popular singles compilation Substance, the original Pretty in Pink soundtrack version was not used, as is widely believed, but an edited version of the 12" remix cut down to six and a half minutes omitting an entire verse of vocals. It is this version that appears most often on CD. As yet, the 9:41 single remix remains unavailable on CD, but the Pretty in Pink soundtrack version contains all of the original vocals. The cover artwork on the 12 inch single is by English photographer Geoff Power and is unique in that the typo 'Alex' on the front top cover [part of the found graffiti] was not added by Peter Saville, the designer.

Used Shellshock 12" mix with panning hi-hats to convince my Mom to buy a new car. One of my favorite sleeves and run-out grooves in the New Order catalog. 'So Hip It Hurts'
― brotherlovesdub, Friday, 31 May 2013 17:49 (thirteen years ago)
"After all the years, now i can't stand the tears, somethings gonna happen, shellshock"- That's the entirety of the omitted verse. Not very essential but it would have been nice if they had put the full version on Substance.
― brotherlovesdub, Friday, 31 May 2013 17:50 (thirteen years ago)
Huh, not sure I've heard the original version, only the version on Substance. Love how the intro trickles in slowly, and the weird little piano part before the vocals come in.
― Vinnie, Friday, 31 May 2013 17:51 (thirteen years ago)
I don't think I've heard the Pretty in Pink version - it's different to the version on Substance, right?
― Culture Cub (I am using your worlds), Friday, 31 May 2013 17:51 (thirteen years ago)
I am going to have to bust out "Pretty In Pink" when I am next at my parents' house because I don't remember it being almost 10 minutes long

― they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Friday, 31 May 2013 17:54 (thirteen years ago)
It's the 12" single that's nearly 10 mins long, I think the PIP version is about 6 minutes

ah okay that makes more sense now

wait by what mechanism did this work
― anonanon, Friday, 31 May 2013 17:58 (thirteen years ago)
i understand them cutting it down for Substance, they needed the room. what i don't understand is why on the 2CD set that Rhino released in 2008 still has the shorter version. they could have easily put out the 10 minute version on that comp and have it on CD for the first time.
― Bee OK, Friday, 31 May 2013 17:58 (thirteen years ago)
I've never heard it but maybe the extra four minutes are Bernard farting into the mic.
― Vinnie, Friday, 31 May 2013 18:01 (thirteen years ago)
I'm a lover of 'Shellshock' and proud... it just has one of those choruses that appears in my head just out of nowhere and I'm all like "yup, I must listen to that immediately". The only criticism I can level at 'Shellshock' is that perhaps its production treatment hasn't aged as well as a lot of other '80s New Order tracks.
― The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 31 May 2013 18:03 (thirteen years ago)
Brought Substance to the car dealer. Went for a test drive with her, played Shellshock loud and she was blown away by the sound system in the car. Don't think she had heard panning like that or electronic music before so it made an impact.
