413 Points, 21 Votes

Bee OK, Friday, 31 May 2013 01:10 (thirteen years ago)

OK, the image scared me for a minute

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Friday, 31 May 2013 01:11 (thirteen years ago)

didn't make it for me, felt odd to have to leave it off though

crabby pate (electricsound), Friday, 31 May 2013 01:13 (thirteen years ago)

xpost

I have a feeling that ceremony will be fine ;)

Millsner, Friday, 31 May 2013 01:15 (thirteen years ago)

I remember dropping like $20 for that 7" just so I could hear the first version of Ceremony. After I bought multiple copies of the green 12" that kept being the second pressing!

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Friday, 31 May 2013 01:17 (thirteen years ago)

My #6 -- the guitar sound on this is extraordinary.

Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 31 May 2013 01:24 (thirteen years ago)

"Hurt" = "Cries and Whispers" no?

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 31 May 2013 01:29 (thirteen years ago)

These pictures are so great! Really enjoying this rundown.

I have realised there are a few tracks I really should have voted for that I inexplicably overlooked. eg Hurt. :(

Culture Cub (I am using your worlds), Friday, 31 May 2013 01:29 (thirteen years ago)

Never mind. I've just realized that "Mesh" is a track I've never in my life heard.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 31 May 2013 01:30 (thirteen years ago)

these tracks poll results are making for a great new order crash course/primer

anonanon, Friday, 31 May 2013 01:31 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, I'm a casual fan and hearing this countdown is blowing my mind

g simmel, Friday, 31 May 2013 01:32 (thirteen years ago)

"Cries & Whispers" is deffo too low. Top 10 for me.

I was one of the #1 votes for Movement so that should have been higher than 4th, but I don't bow at the altar of Technique like most of you.

I voted for most of what has placed so far. Looking forward to more!

xp. Alfred, I know people always get C&W mixed up with "Mesh" thanks to someone screwing up the titles on the Substance b-sides disc/tape, but I have never heard of anyone mixing up C&W and "Hurt" before. :-/

Kent Burt, Friday, 31 May 2013 01:33 (thirteen years ago)

I blame them: titles and so on.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 31 May 2013 01:35 (thirteen years ago)

now I realize I've never owned "Mesh" in any form.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 31 May 2013 01:35 (thirteen years ago)

at this point i wonder whether my #2 didn't make the top 40 at all or it's a lot more popular than i thought

crabby pate (electricsound), Friday, 31 May 2013 01:37 (thirteen years ago)

33. Crystal
From: Get Ready
Released: 13 August 2001 (single) and 27 August 2001 (album)
414 Points, 24 Votes

Bee OK, Friday, 31 May 2013 01:39 (thirteen years ago)

Should be higher: top twenty. What a fantastic shock to hear this in summer '01.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 31 May 2013 01:40 (thirteen years ago)

Surprised this is so low. Doesn't bode well for the rest of Get Ready, either.

Millsner, Friday, 31 May 2013 01:44 (thirteen years ago)

"Crystal" got just 1 more point then "In A Lonely Place." 24 people voted for it compared to 21 for "In A Lonely Place." it deserved to come out on top.

Bee OK, Friday, 31 May 2013 01:47 (thirteen years ago)

I love In a Lonely Place, but Crystal is where I am at these days.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Friday, 31 May 2013 01:55 (thirteen years ago)

Whoa. Shocked at this so low. Definitely means no Primitive Notion now. Easily one of the best songs they've done since the glory years of the mid80s.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 31 May 2013 01:56 (thirteen years ago)

maybe some Get Ready strategists sacrificed Crystal to boost... every other song from that album.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Friday, 31 May 2013 02:06 (thirteen years ago)

I fully expect Rock the Shack in at #5

Millsner, Friday, 31 May 2013 02:10 (thirteen years ago)

Alfred otm about Crystal -- it sounded SO GOOD at the time ( with an exception for honey/money but hey who cares with a beat like that)
Yaaaay crystal.

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Friday, 31 May 2013 02:10 (thirteen years ago)

One of my top ten has placed already. Kinda bummed about that, but I understand why (it was 'Here to Stay').

But, I have to say, as someone who was disgusted by Republic upon revisiting it for this poll, I'm pretty upset at this juncture.

Austin, Friday, 31 May 2013 02:13 (thirteen years ago)

And yeah, what the fucking hell RE: 'Mesh'????????????!?!?!?!!!!!

It's identified as 'Mesh' on my copy of Substance, but upon further investigation, that song that's labeled 'Mesh' is clearly 'Cries and Whispers.'

I'm fucking befuddled.

Austin, Friday, 31 May 2013 02:14 (thirteen years ago)

Seems about right for "Crystal" tbh. Sooooo freakin' many definitive 80s tracks innit.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Friday, 31 May 2013 02:16 (thirteen years ago)

The track listing on Substance is wrong. What is Cries and Whispers they label as Mesh. Mesh is not on Substance at all.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Friday, 31 May 2013 02:17 (thirteen years ago)

But, I have to say, as someone who was disgusted by Republic upon revisiting it for this poll, I'm pretty upset at this juncture.

Disgusted?!?

Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 31 May 2013 02:17 (thirteen years ago)

it's one of the most notorious mislabellings in the history of rock

crabby pate (electricsound), Friday, 31 May 2013 02:18 (thirteen years ago)

Disgusted?!?

i'd agree with that

crabby pate (electricsound), Friday, 31 May 2013 02:18 (thirteen years ago)

guys, that was my #1 album pick, come on

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Friday, 31 May 2013 02:19 (thirteen years ago)

Republic sucks.

Bad.

Austin, Friday, 31 May 2013 02:20 (thirteen years ago)

i didn't like it back in the day, and liked it even less on relistening to it

crabby pate (electricsound), Friday, 31 May 2013 02:21 (thirteen years ago)

it's one of the most notorious mislabellings in the history of rock

Maybe it was mislabled on the original single? And the labeling on Substance was the correction?

Austin, Friday, 31 May 2013 02:22 (thirteen years ago)

It appears on the Factory Benelux 'Everything's Gone Green' single, and on the 1981–1982 EP. Both are labelled correctly.

Millsner, Friday, 31 May 2013 02:23 (thirteen years ago)

it was mislabelled on 81-82 ep iirc?

crabby pate (electricsound), Friday, 31 May 2013 02:23 (thirteen years ago)

or not

crabby pate (electricsound), Friday, 31 May 2013 02:23 (thirteen years ago)

Has the band ever clarified?

Austin, Friday, 31 May 2013 02:24 (thirteen years ago)

apparently the FBN 12" is incorrect according to http://www.discogs.com/New-Order-Everythings-Gone-Green/release/1197986

crabby pate (electricsound), Friday, 31 May 2013 02:25 (thirteen years ago)

ah, that's it then.

I have the 1981–1982 EP and it's definitely fine.

Millsner, Friday, 31 May 2013 02:25 (thirteen years ago)

the total lack of connection between titles and lyrics certainly hasn't helped

crabby pate (electricsound), Friday, 31 May 2013 02:27 (thirteen years ago)

So wait. . .

What we've known as 'Mesh' on Substance is actually its real title? And that was the correction?

Austin, Friday, 31 May 2013 02:29 (thirteen years ago)

what? no

crabby pate (electricsound), Friday, 31 May 2013 02:30 (thirteen years ago)

the Mesh/ Cries And Whispers mis-titling and other confusions are cleared up by the Recycle blog

http://neworder-recycle.blogspot.co.uk/search?updated-min=2009-01-01T00:00:00-08:00&updated-max=2009-08-04T19:40:00-07:00&max-results=35&start=28&by-date=false

piscesx, Friday, 31 May 2013 02:30 (thirteen years ago)

it is also cleared up on those 2CD sets that came out by Rhino a few years back.

32. Mr Disco
From: Technique
Released: 30 January 1989
417 Points, 20 Votes

Bee OK, Friday, 31 May 2013 02:35 (thirteen years ago)

my god this song -- it's indie rock reconfigured as a late eighties version of disco.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 31 May 2013 02:41 (thirteen years ago)

Don't mind seeing "Crystal" this low. Never cared for it that much - thought it was seen by most as sub-Electronic?

Kent Burt, Friday, 31 May 2013 02:42 (thirteen years ago)

'Mr. Disco' — fuck yeah.

My #11 though, so obviously I think it should be higher.
