Disappointing that the new The Knife album not just the sound of a knife cutting different materials

a very generous Cordoban (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 30 May 2013 21:21 (thirteen years ago)

kinda does tho, in parts

give life back to usic (The Reverend), Thursday, 30 May 2013 21:27 (thirteen years ago)

i just don't know why we are supposed to consider the economic realities behind the production of a daft punk album and not kanye or taylor or all the glitzy kpop he listens to

because most of the production on a kanye record, and most mainstream rap and pop records, could have been done on a laptop/bedroom setup (and probably was).

Just a a big laptop really

cute pic of Kanye and his macbook pro

a very generous Cordoban (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 30 May 2013 23:40 (thirteen years ago)

when you said 'production on a kanye record could have been done on a laptop' I had to google it. If you had said 'kanye wears a canadian tuxedo while in the studio' I would've called bullshit right away. but here we are.

sure there's a giant mixing board, but we're still talking about sample-based music here, for the most part. that board isn't generating those sounds, they're still coming from computers and samplers. running samples and software-generated sounds through outboard compressors and EQs is cool, but i don't think it makes as much as a difference as it does for live instruments.

a lot of times electronic music only hits that kind of gear at the mastering stage, and it doesn't necessarily make sense to do it during recording.

precious bonsai children of new york (Jordan), Friday, 31 May 2013 01:15 (thirteen years ago)

right, so it matters a lot for taylor swift albums and his tumblr is named after a t swift lyric

nice, owned

Not trying to own anybody. Just trying to figure out how it was a response to 乒乓's point, which I thought was a good one

a very generous Cordoban (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 31 May 2013 01:51 (thirteen years ago)

taylor swift has an album 'my penis is made of dogshit'?

iatee, Friday, 31 May 2013 02:12 (thirteen years ago)

yup and it's great

I'm glad she's finally branching out

iatee, Friday, 31 May 2013 02:16 (thirteen years ago)

In title track, she fantasizes telling a room full of people about her dogshit penis but never actually does it. When she gets up to leave, cutest boy in room tells her 'I have a penis made of dog shit'. They split nachos at the drive-in

The same Kanye who's used live strings on every album?

give life back to usic (The Reverend), Friday, 31 May 2013 11:03 (thirteen years ago)

the real crime in that kanye studio pic is he is wearing what appears to be beats by dre, no wonder MBDTF's production sounded like shit

Kanye works with Mike Dean who despite recording some of my fav hip hop ever (Geto boys, scarf ace, UGK) isn't the guy id go to for a nice sounding records these days. He's of the LOL stick an ultramaximizer on everything to make it pop school of production. Everything this record isn't.

Crackle Box, Friday, 31 May 2013 13:35 (thirteen years ago)

lol at "scarf ace"

Interesting read:

http://www.sonicscoop.com/2013/05/27/icons-mick-guzauski-on-engineering-and-mixing-daft-punks-random-access-memories/

Read this yesterday -- great piece.
There's no question that DP's approach here was 100% sincere -- that it wasn't spending money for money's sake or doing something they were supposed to do, but just musicians exploring a different side of the craft. Honestly, they don't sound any different than a hundred other musicians in terms of how they approach tracking, mixing and editing. If anything, they sounded pretty trad.

Anyone still obsessed with that blog post should read this, bc here's this engineer who's done a million records over the years, who's an industry guy through and through, having worked on music both legendary and legendarily crap --
who seems to have found himself genuinely reinvigorated by this project. Give Life Back to Music, indeed.

Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 31 May 2013 16:25 (thirteen years ago)

Which itself brings another angle to this which is whether instead of crapping on musicians who do their thing on laptops, etc., are they making the case that EDM musicians are artists too, that they're part of an awesome heritage, and that they can (and should) raise their game?

That seems to be a lot more "Daft Punky" than "the rest of you suck."

Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 31 May 2013 16:30 (thirteen years ago)

^That's exactly what I took away from this album. It's shocking to me (perhaps it shouldn't be) that a sad number of people who write about dance music have no clue about it's roots, which led to many being baffled by this album. There so much more to the genre than bleep-bleep-boop-bop. To hear that swing section on "Touch" referred to as some kind of show-tune tribute is hilarious. There's a good amount of disco that references big band, so it's not as weird an inclusion as one might think.

Cousin Slappy, Friday, 31 May 2013 17:51 (thirteen years ago)

last 3 posts otm. woke up still feeling trolled by that blog post

a very generous Cordoban (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 31 May 2013 18:12 (thirteen years ago)

So rock bands covering "Get Lucky" are this year's rock bands covering "Hey Ya," right?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 31 May 2013 18:30 (thirteen years ago)

oh man, that's gonna yield some BAAAD covers

i don't even have an internet (Hurting 2), Friday, 31 May 2013 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

already anticipating the "Daft Punk Shreds" video, tbh

well if it isn't old 11 cameras simon (gbx), Friday, 31 May 2013 18:47 (thirteen years ago)

there's a good nile rogers video on youtube where he explains why pretty much everyone plays le freak wrong

giving this more time, Give Life Back to Music and Instant Crush are becoming the standout tunes for me

i don't even have an internet (Hurting 2), Friday, 31 May 2013 18:52 (thirteen years ago)

i can't really ride with most of the robot vocals here. especially when they barge into "lose yourself to dance", total buzzkill.

brimstead, Friday, 31 May 2013 18:55 (thirteen years ago)

madness, they enhance it

Ismael Klata, Friday, 31 May 2013 18:58 (thirteen years ago)

I can't really ride with the Pharrell vocals tbh. He can't sing at all, not in a singerly way and not in a non-singerly, stylized way. He has a really amateurish "I'm singing falsetto in the shower" quality and he hasn't gotten any better.

i don't even have an internet (Hurting 2), Friday, 31 May 2013 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

Beyond kind of sounds like I Keep Forgettin

i don't even have an internet (Hurting 2), Friday, 31 May 2013 19:00 (thirteen years ago)

the robot vocal doing the COME ON ascension is one of my favorite parts of the whole album

anonanon, Friday, 31 May 2013 19:01 (thirteen years ago)

Eeeuggh needs some heavier troutman-style action imo

brimstead, Friday, 31 May 2013 19:04 (thirteen years ago)

i think the robot vox sound better on the slow jams

'within' might be my favorite song on the record actually

ciderpress, Friday, 31 May 2013 19:06 (thirteen years ago)

Ok new blogs up!

ʎqןıs (gr8080), Friday, 31 May 2013 19:18 (thirteen years ago)

Without question, I'd like this album better if it included singers I actually like, and not singers I actively dislike. Really, weird, divisive selection all around, like they actively avoided ringers in favor of a b-list hodgepodge.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 31 May 2013 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

I've never really had a problem with Pharrell vocals except for when he raps.

give life back to usic (The Reverend), Friday, 31 May 2013 19:39 (thirteen years ago)

same here, never bothered me on the neptunes stuff and i genunely love "bobby james"
