I like the story of them using different mic's from different eras to record Giorgio Moroder's voice, and claiming that while most listeners wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the mics, at least THEY knew!

Further, "Random Access Memories" is the first dance/electronic album to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in more than a year. The last dance/electronic No. 1 was Madonna's "MDNA" -- it debuted atop the April 14, 2012 chart.

interesting standards

i didn't even give much of a fuck that you were mod (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 29 May 2013 05:57 (thirteen years ago)

"Notably, in one week, "Random Access Memories" has sold more than twice what the total sales are for "Human After All." The latter has sold just 125,000 to date. Comparably, Daft Punk's best selling album is "Discovery," with 796,000."

Assume they're just US sales?

groovypanda, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 07:26 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah they're just US sales. I saw they revealed the UK sales for all their previous albums this week.

Discovery 566,927
Homework 345,09
Tron Legacy 128,595
Musique 122,487
Human After All 80,838
Live 2007 53,613
Alive 1997 15,517

The new album sold 165,091 here in the UK last week, over twice what Human After All has sold in it's lifetime.

I haven't seen this mentioned earlier in the thread but has anybody else noticed the vinyl version of RAM playing a little faster (and pitched a tiny bit higher) than the digital versions?

I just tried flipping back and forth between vinyl and CD - no discernible pitch difference to these ears.

cool how all the band members have the same first name as the instrument they play

cheeseburger, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 09:46 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, "game of love" shouldn't even be on the album. and certainly not at the second position

Yeah I always have this nagging problem with albums where the second track is really underwhelming. I actually wonder whether people would be more receptive to the album as a whole if you were to swap 'Game of Love' and 'Get Lucky' around.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 09:48 (thirteen years ago)

I get really angry about bad sequencing. It's like, come on, you've got all the right songs, just get them in the right order. I call this The Tusk Problem.

but loads of people like this album

the Quim of Bendigo (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 29 May 2013 09:51 (thirteen years ago)

lol otm it's not *that* bad

caek, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 10:03 (thirteen years ago)

"game of love" is good.

... (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 29 May 2013 10:05 (thirteen years ago)

I just think there should be a law against really slow second tracks (see also: Kid A)

Deafening silence (DL), Wednesday, 29 May 2013 10:11 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah I dunno, it's fine in itself but it feels like a damp squib in between Give Life and Giorgio, it fucks up the album's flow and might work better elsewhere. I mean imagine Discovery with Something About Us in between One More Time and Digital Love.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 10:22 (thirteen years ago)

you'd think they'd have noticed that their track order was incorrect and fixed it after all the trouble they went to otherwise

that sounds grouse, honestly

they probably forgot what with all the other stuff they had to do. can someone send them this thread?

... (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 29 May 2013 10:35 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah bands never do things intentionally while still fucking up.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 10:41 (thirteen years ago)

Think it's a bit rich to call it fucking up. but then I think it's fine where it is

Make a playlist

not lazy but clowning (Suedey 2), Wednesday, 29 May 2013 10:43 (thirteen years ago)

human after all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

they'll probably do a recall and repressing when they realise

conrad, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 10:53 (thirteen years ago)

'game of love' definitely sets a downer mood for the whole album on yr first listen through

乒乓, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 10:55 (thirteen years ago)

Which is awesome.

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 10:56 (thirteen years ago)

It doesn't even work conceptually though. Give Life to Music and Giorgio are both making the same point whereas Game of Love belongs with the sad-robot stuff that comes later. That said, from Touch to the end is immaculately sequenced. Move GoL to between Lose Yourself and Touch and we're golden.

Man I really love this album.

Deafening silence (DL), Wednesday, 29 May 2013 11:03 (thirteen years ago)

I've changed my mind about "game of love". I find it lovely now, it just took longer to grow on me !
that said, I still think it would be better toward the end of the album.

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 11:19 (thirteen years ago)

well sorry guys but it's track two and that's the end of it. you can change your playlists but you'll always know you cheated.

... (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 29 May 2013 11:23 (thirteen years ago)

maybe it's not the real version of the album that was released ?

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 11:26 (thirteen years ago)

Lol Garda you would be the first to shoot down this milquetoast "respect the artists' aesthetic decision" bullshit on the Knife thread.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 11:28 (thirteen years ago)

it's called random access memories not precisely sequenced memories

conrad, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 11:29 (thirteen years ago)

this is how it starts and then soon we'll be supposed to think digital love in between instant crush and lose yourself to dance, and hey i have an old track by another artist that is great there too and before you know it it's not an album at all, but a playlist.

... (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 29 May 2013 11:32 (thirteen years ago)

There'll be blood on the streets.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 11:34 (thirteen years ago)

Isn't the little twiddling bit at the start of within about changing the key, because the first three tracks are in the same key? Which would mean that if they wanted to keep the key-change gimmick, all they can do is rearrange the first three tracks. In that light, GoL is in the best place - it can't be 1 or 3. I guess the question then is why did they want to hold on to that key-change gimmick? Is it really that important? It's like they wanted the flow to be one way, but its actually the other way.

The security guard should have patiently explained to Marlow that his choices are no more immune to criticism than anyone else's. That would have worked out well.

Loving the passive aggressive discursive shifts in the thread, needs more vocoder B+

doin' it right

crüt, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 13:04 (thirteen years ago)

"Give Life To Music" is the Overture; "The Game of Love" is the Prelude. Or something like that. Anyhow, they both introduce themes that are built on further down the line.

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 13:29 (thirteen years ago)

"The Game of Love" is pretty funky. I think if there's anything disrupting the flow there, it's the fadeout on "Give Life Back To Music."

crüt, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 13:37 (thirteen years ago)

I usually open YouTube and listen to this instead of GOL to fix the sequencing problem https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geVZYCcAdBc
