I had an idea today that was either brilliant or really stupid -- y'all be the judge. Each December when we start the EOY hiatus, we do a radio-button poll of the artist polls still to come -- "which one are you most looking forward to?" Winner gets to jump to the head of the line in February.

WilliamC, Thursday, 23 May 2013 21:34 (thirteen years ago)

you need to poll that possibility

Euler, Thursday, 23 May 2013 21:36 (thirteen years ago)

in that case I'll start my campaign for the CCR poll with this:

Creedence Clearwater Revival vs the Grateful Dead vs the Band

ḉrut (crüt), Thursday, 23 May 2013 21:36 (thirteen years ago)

I kinda like that idea actually! Lets us keep the organized, take-your-turn system of the polls while introducing a little big of unpredictability so it doesn't just feel like waiting out an endless countdown.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 23 May 2013 21:57 (thirteen years ago)

That's what I was thinking! And doing it just once a year wouldn't be too disruptive, and doing it during the hiatus would give the poll-runner time to prepare.

WilliamC, Thursday, 23 May 2013 21:59 (thirteen years ago)

during Carnival, the artist being polled should run a poll of ILX posters. we can kickstart the funds for this.

Euler, Thursday, 23 May 2013 22:11 (thirteen years ago)

I think a Thelonious Monk albums + tracks poll would be a winner, just trying to plant seeds.

Confessin' my cluelessness: I have no idea who or what Sightings is.

Only my cardiologist knows for sure. (WilliamC), Monday, 27 May 2013 03:39 (thirteen years ago)

tbh, they have more albums than I'd realized (http://www.discogs.com/artist/Sightings), but that's going to be the most niche poll attempted yet.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 27 May 2013 03:45 (thirteen years ago)

I only know of them because I have a split 7" w/ them on it

siouxsan sarandon (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 27 May 2013 04:08 (thirteen years ago)

Absolutes wasn't bad noise rock iirc but, yeah, it's all I've heard by them and I haven't listened to it in years.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 27 May 2013 05:04 (thirteen years ago)

Not sure how many ballots it'll get, but can you put me down for John Coltrane?

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Monday, 27 May 2013 05:08 (thirteen years ago)

Will do.

Only my cardiologist knows for sure. (WilliamC), Monday, 27 May 2013 18:38 (thirteen years ago)

suggestion

a simple 2 horse face off : tk disco vs philadephia international records

(or would this fall under tuomas DISCO thread ? )

with the love of big studio/session loving disco excess at the moment, i thought it time ILM threw some love to these labels given they both had a distinctive take on the DISCO thing.

of course i would never put myself in the position of being an expert on either, just that both labels are my main listening focus at the moment, and i would love the ILM hivemind to direct me into finding more excellence.

mark e, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 22:03 (thirteen years ago)

Would suggest waiting to see how the big disco poll turns out, PIR at least will have a good showing there.

sword of (seandalai), Tuesday, 28 May 2013 23:28 (thirteen years ago)

re PIR : you'd kind of hope so ..

mark e, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 23:50 (thirteen years ago)

So yeah, I was thinking I could compile the disco pre-nomination list and start the nomination thread this week, since I have some free time at the moment. Is it okay to run the nomination thread concurrent with the Motown and Stax nominations? Obviously I'd start the actual poll thread only after those two polls are finished. I'm kinda busy for the last two weeks of June, and the first couple of weeks of July I'll be in the US, so I won't have any time then, that's why I thought this would be the best time to start the nominations.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 07:14 (thirteen years ago)

Would have thought so, yes.

Mark G, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 10:08 (thirteen years ago)

disco disco disco disco disco

sword of (seandalai), Wednesday, 29 May 2013 12:20 (thirteen years ago)

i think pre-nomination threads for really broad polls like these is essential, you should go for it imo

some dude, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 12:55 (thirteen years ago)

Have at it.

I just called to say I love TAMLA MOTOWN SINGLES POLL - VOTING ENDS 1st JULY 2013

tell me more (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 2 June 2013 21:08 (thirteen years ago)

Woot!

A full month for voting...would it make sense to have an artist poll going on during June as well?

Thank you for talkin' to me Williamsburg (WilliamC), Monday, 3 June 2013 00:42 (thirteen years ago)

Tuomas et al: Would it be ok to move the disco poll in front of Stax? I'm travelling for a lot of July and probably won't have time to run my poll properly.

seanda.ly (seandalai), Monday, 3 June 2013 14:16 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, just noticed Tuomas' post about not being around at the beginning of July. I don't mind shifting Stax back a bit and letting whoever wants to go before me.

seanda.ly (seandalai), Monday, 3 June 2013 14:17 (thirteen years ago)

Also, I think Disco, like Motown, is sort of on its own extended timetable separate from the other polls, et al.

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Monday, 3 June 2013 14:41 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I was thinking that for Motown, Stax and disco. It's kind of unfortunate that they wound up bunched together on the list. Any opinions on one or two artist polls in June concurrent with Motown?

Thank you for talkin' to me Williamsburg (WilliamC), Monday, 3 June 2013 15:17 (thirteen years ago)

Something very unMotown. The Clash'd work.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 3 June 2013 15:55 (thirteen years ago)

That's the one I was thinking about too, if Gukbe was interested in going on short notice.

Thank you for talkin' to me Williamsburg (WilliamC), Monday, 3 June 2013 15:59 (thirteen years ago)

Why not go in order and do Jay Z? Or did some dude say he couldnt do it?

why pee on the beat (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Monday, 3 June 2013 16:02 (thirteen years ago)

He said he had 99 problems..

Mark G, Monday, 3 June 2013 16:05 (thirteen years ago)

Jay-Z would work too, if some dude is ready to go. But I know he was planning on regathering ballots/redoing the Neptunes poll during the Jay-Z poll, so I don't know if that requires more work.

Thank you for talkin' to me Williamsburg (WilliamC), Monday, 3 June 2013 16:07 (thirteen years ago)

I've already sent him my Neptunes ballot, frankly I'm disgusted how long he's taking

Ismael Klata, Monday, 3 June 2013 16:11 (thirteen years ago)

wait, disgusted with me or V79?

i can get the Jay-Z and Neptunes redux running soon if that works for people. can somebody give me the ideal timeframe to open/close voting and roll out results, so I can hew close to that and make everyone as happy as possible?

some dude, Monday, 3 June 2013 16:13 (thirteen years ago)

Not really, I've got mad <3 for whoever finally finishes the damn thing

You've basically got June to yourself as you see fit imo, those two will be quite sufficient

Ismael Klata, Monday, 3 June 2013 16:22 (thirteen years ago)

yeah I guess if I open voting for about or under 2 weeks starting this week, and roll out results for both polls in the 2nd half of June, that would work?

some dude, Monday, 3 June 2013 16:24 (thirteen years ago)

I can't do the Clash until next week, but I'm happy to do it then.

Gukbe, Monday, 3 June 2013 16:28 (thirteen years ago)

I assumed "disgusted" was a joke.

Thank you for talkin' to me Williamsburg (WilliamC), Monday, 3 June 2013 16:37 (thirteen years ago)

yeah just checking!

some dude, Monday, 3 June 2013 16:39 (thirteen years ago)

it was a joke, I was making light of how I really feel

Ismael Klata, Monday, 3 June 2013 16:42 (thirteen years ago)

I haven't asked a hoy hoy if he minded an artist poll running concurrently with Motown; hope I'm not stepping on his lines. It just seemed like a good opportunity to drop some other poll action into the mix this month. Much as I love Motown, I can't imagine listening to nothing but for 3.5 weeks, big discography or no.

Thank you for talkin' to me Williamsburg (WilliamC), Monday, 3 June 2013 16:52 (thirteen years ago)

Wang Chung, your moment has come?

Jeff W, Monday, 3 June 2013 17:07 (thirteen years ago)

i'll pop in to the Motown thread and ask for hoy's blessing

some dude, Monday, 3 June 2013 18:36 (thirteen years ago)

I'm happy for artist polls to run. Especially Jay/Neptunes! I was listening to the Dynasty album on the way to work, I'd be v excited to revisit even more.

tell me more (a hoy hoy), Monday, 3 June 2013 19:08 (thirteen years ago)

i kept voting for New Order open for 10 days, i think it worked perfectly.
